McDonagh has not played like a #1 D in 2 seasons. The people here believe the team is perfect.
Far from it but McDonagh is the least of our problems.

Yes, but that isn't what you said.
"Best possession team in the league wins the Cup again. Not rocket science."
LA was.
The Rangers actually somehow lead the league in PDO. Still trying to figure out how that's possible.
2014 will be 3 seasons ago. It's kind of pathetic to be clinging on to the year the Rangers lost in the Cup final. They did not win. The goal is to win the Cup. Not be "competitive". This quick retool nonsense never works.
Okay and through 82 games Pitt was number two despite their mediocre start.
Whether or not the number one or two posession team won is mostly irrelevent. A top posession team won, again.
Ok so over a ~60 game sample they had almost identical possession numbers.
Let's see the forest for the trees as Silverfish just alluded to.

I think another key component of both yours and silverfish's statements is how radically different that both of those teams are constructed, yet they still achieve similar results. We need to decide which type of team we want to be, and build into that mold. LA does is by a heavy, grinding style while being stifling through the neutral zone and being able to move the puck quickly out of danger in the defensive zone. Pittsburgh did it by being a speedy, forechecking demon that would burn you in transition, yet were also stifling through the neutral zone and could get pucks out of danger in the defensive zone. Isn't it weird how something seems to be in common between both of those teams that helps lead towards being a successful possession team?
McDonagh was pretty good considering he played with the corpse known as Dan Girardi.
We need to rank for a few years. Look at Chicago, Pittsburgh. It's the only way.
I'm pretty sure his numbers looked a lot better when he was away from Girardi.

Yup I'm willing to bet they are.

Letang was terrific in the playoffs. He was finally healthy. Crosby. Letang. The Rangers don't have a D like Letang. The Rangers need wholesale changes. Plan and vision.
Pittsburgh was the best team in the league since January, without question and the best team in the playoffs. Not sure how they went to 7 with TB.
Their positioning, passing, and dedication to their system is why they won the Cup.
And for every tank job like Pittsburgh and Chicago I'll give you Edmonton and Florida. Full rebuild doesn't necessarily mean success down the track.
Again for every Chicago/Pittsburgh there's Florida and Edmonton.
When did Detroit tank?
And top possession team got eliminated in 1st round too.
I know this may be shocking, but don't you think that these factors are what resulted in their good possession numbers.
Speed kills. The Rangers had the blueprint a few years ago. Hey had to tweak it to try and get over the hump. It didn't work. Girardi, Staal, Moore, Nash all regressed. It's time to revamp the team. They have good pieces. Augment those pieces.
In the process of doing this they should secure some future pieces. It's not rocket science. Hopefully Gorton has the smarts to make the aggressive play now to set himself up long term.
