Demelo is not a bottom pairing D. He is 3rd in TOI.
He's 3rd in ice time because of his special teams usage though. His even strength usage is mostly sheltered with Borowiecki. He's starting to play more with Chabot, which is a better option than Zaitsev. No competitive team would have Demelo on their PP or heavily used on the PK.

Demelo is better than maybe 4 of those guys. And most of the guys on that list are orders of magnitude better. He's a 6/7 guy on any average NHL team.

people here forget that demelo didn't even get a QO offer from SJ the offseason that we traded for him. he was a throw in to get a contract off the books for SJ. he's improved since his time there but he's nothing more than a third pairing guy on a good team.

Demelo is clearly not better than Barrie, who's legitimate top end PP QB. That's wild. Mete, you could debate but he's progressing nicely. It won't even be close soon.
If you put Barrie as the 4 in TO he’s behind Ceci. Besides Barrie might be the biggest train wreck defensively I have seen in over a decade. He is so bad.

Barrie is clearly not being used properly in Toronto. Valuing DeMelo over him is hilarious

The question was who is a better # 4 D. The answer is Demelo because Barrie is a PP specialist who is a HUGE liability defending zone entries and in-zone. You should watch Barrie play, he has been awful for years.

Sure. They're different players and in trade value Barrie clearly will have higher value but Demelo is a servicable 4/5. There's a few teams he is a 3 (like us) and some he's a 5. I'm not sure of any teams in the league where he would actually end up a #7 with his current performance. I could be wrong but I think a lot of teams around the league would view a guy like him quite favorably.

Demelo is a bottom pairing guy. He should never be in a teams top 4, and if he is, your team is not going anywhere.

Ottawa isn’t going anywhere, so they can afford to have him play top 4 minutes. Any team that has aspirations of playing in the spring will have him slotted on a bottom pairing.

According to Wayne Scanlan. Honestly, I don't know how anyone could watch this team and not conclude that Pageau is the team's best defensive player. That seems painfully obvious.
Might have only been including dmen in that category, in which case, there is an argument to be made that DeMelo has been our best defensive Dmen.

I'm reporting this post to the mods for being too on point and ridiculously accurate.

That's what that button is for, right? To recognize great posts?

It's actually hilarious how Toronto hasn't even tried Barrie on their first powerplay unit when their powerplay has been AWFUL. I thought that was the whole reason to get him.
