I see he played 3 years for UPEI then 1 with Nipissing. Did he not graduate? What was is 'compelling argument' for the transfer because UPEI has an Education program (which he enrolled in at Nip).

I guess it was on compassionate grounds.

Re: Alberta Recruiting

Defending Canada West Champion Alberta who returned to National prominence IMO last season return their top seven scoring forwards, their top 8 D and their #1 goalie.
The Bears have received verbal committments from two WHL graduates who will add to Alberta's deep offence up front.
One of the players has averaged 35 goals a season for the last two seasons, the other has averaged roughly 75 points per season for the last two years.
Both SHOULD play in Ian Herbers' top 9 up front.
Luke Siemens who stole some games in Edmonton last year for the Prince Albert Raiders will challenge Kurtis Mucha for the #1 job in goal.
My expectation is that the Golden Bears when it is all said and done will have a better team come September then a year ago.
As many of you the Bears were snakebitten at the University Cup in Saskatoon and were perhaps unlucky to have not advanced to the final against UNB.
We will see if Alberta can take the next step this season.

Thanks for the report.

So are the two recruits you alluded two considered sure things or do you have to wait until September to find out for sure?

With all the additions teams in the OUA West are making..........looks like it will be a very tough transition for Ryerson (although the Rams have added some decent depth) & Toronto (little to no upgrades in way of recruits)........does anyone think either team has a shot at a play off spot?

Ryerson has added Kelly Geoffrey W previous with Rams but had to sit out last year due to academics.

As for will Ryerson or U of T makes playoff, I think Ryerson has a better chance than U of T at this point.

The list of recruits is always interesting but I always hasten to add that one has to verify just who is returning before coming to judgment.

For example, a team with two returning major junior goaltenders who announces the recruitment of one more has not really done too much to improve. On the other hand, the same recruiting announcement from a team with one returning Junior A grad would be big news.

With an obvious bias acknowledged, I think Waterloo has - on paper - made the jump to the top tier of the OUAW with Western. They're returning the CIS' leading scorer, the CIS rookie scoring champ, and an all-star DMan. They look like they filled their goaltending hole, added two top-6 forwards, added some experience, and went out and got arguably one of the top DMen available out of Jr Hockey.

The OUA West is such a crapshoot - I'd argue the most parity-rich conference in the CIS, so it's much more useless to match rosters and handicap in August. Having said that, the Warriors look like they'll put themselves in a position to repeat as division champs.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the board so I hope I picked the right thread for the following:

I want to find out my CIS eligibility status.

Here's some information about myself:
I am a German goalie, born in March 1993 (therefor turning 21 on March 2014) and currently enrolled in college in Germany.

After junior I've been playing pro during the 2012/13 and 2011/12 seasons in both the 2nd and 3rd German league each year.
My latest pro game was on March 2nd 2013.

Is this information enough to figure out my eligibility status? I've been reading all the rules and regulations on the CIS website and I think there might be a chance but I'm not sure.

Just checking this, too: NCAA is definitely not possible, right?

Also, is it too late to get in touch with Colleges/ Universities for the upcoming season?
How would I proceed - just call and send emails to the coaches of all the schools?
Are open try-outs actually worth going? (keep in mind I live in Germany and a flight to Canada is not exactly cheap...)

Thank you in advance!
Lou

My guess is:

- NCAA is not an option.

- You have 3 years eligibility left in CIS.

- You must sit a year (i.e. could play from March 2, 2014 onwards).

- Some teams need a goalie but you have to be a full-time student. Probably better off to make enquiries now for 2014-15.

I am sure others will have better information.

Thank you, Hollywood!

What do you mean with "some teams need a goalie but you have to be a full-time student?"

I know you have to reach a certain amount of academic credits per time period and I don't mind studying a lot so that shouldn't be a problem.

Also, I wouldn't mind playing from March 2014 on but how would that work? Would I have to go to the respective school this september already or once I'm eligible to play? Do you think this would be an issue (probably if they need a goalie they need one when the season starts, right?)

Btw, I don't mean to hijack this thread so please let me know if this is not the right place!

Btw, I don't mean to hijack this thread so please let me know if this is not the right place!

It's certainly an odd place to start, but here's what you need to know:

1) Most teams in the CIS have an established #1 goalie with very good credentials, but many are looking for a #2 or #3 goalie who is happy to be on the roster in a backup role.
2) The CIS regular season finishes in February, so there's no way a team would waste a year of your eligibility by dressing you for a playoff game in March. Moreover, the teams that are still playing after March 2 are the top teams, and they all certainly have a top goalie already on their roster. So, 2013-2014 is not happening for you.
3) Coming from Germany, you'd be hard pressed to find a team willing to commit a roster spot to you. Your best bet is to find a Canadian university you're interested in attending, applying and getting accepted, and then making a push as a walk-on.
4) The important thing about being a "full-time student" is that you must get accepted into a program at the university you wish to attend. It's not as simple as just showing up and registering for courses. While it's possible that a university looking to fill spots would consider your application at this time, it's not likely.

If you are really serious about moving to Canada to get your degree and play CIS hockey, you should start by looking at what universities you would like to attend, and contacting the coaches at those schools. Many universities offer January enrolment, so you might consider moving over, starting classes full-time, and seeing if you can practice as the 3rd goalie and perhaps play with a Senior Men's team in the area at the same time, in order to establish your abilities.

Lou's Eligibility

I am a German goalie, born in March 1993 (therefor turning 21 on March 2014) and currently enrolled in college in Germany.

After junior I've been playing pro during the 2012/13 and 2011/12 seasons in both the 2nd and 3rd German league each year.
My latest pro game was on March 2nd 2013.

Lou - the CIS considers all levels of European hockey as pro (for which you should lose one year of eligibility). Even though you have played two years of pro the CIS does not penalize you if you are 21 or under. In your case, you do not lose any of your eligibility for those two years. So Hollywood was partially correct at 3-years (5-2), but when you consider you are under 21, you would have 5 years of total eligibility.

You could technically play this coming season without penalty.

40.10.6.2.1.7.3.1 Participation in a regular season or playoff game of a professional league, inclusive of all European Hockey Leagues in any division, is subject to the charging of eligibility and participation in CIS competition is prohibited within one year of participation (participation in a training camp or per-season exhibition games is exempt from this policy), unless such participation takes place prior to December 31 of the year the athlete turns 21.

40.10.6.2.1.7.3.3 Participation in any other league based outside of Canada or the United States is subject to the charging of eligibility, unless such participation takes place prior to December 31 of the year the athlete turns 21

As others have pointed out - you must be academically accepted into a full-time degree program at the school before you can play. This may require that you provide your current academic marks as well as write a standardize test as part of the entrance criteria for the school (each school is different). I would suggest you focus on a school or program of interest and work with the Athletic Department and Register's Office to see what is needed to be accepted into a degree program.

It would be tough to find a school for this coming season given the academic criteria that would have to be finalized as well as find a team that needs a goalie. You can certainly enroll at Christmas and look to practice with the team or just work on academics and play the 2014/15 season or you can play in Germany and work on finding a school/program and getting your paperwork in order for next September.

Worth noting - tuition is higher for foreign students at most schools - sometimes twice as much (close to $10-$12K). The hockey program is under no obligation to provide you financial assistance.

Caveat - this is my interpretation of the CIS Eligibility Guidelines, you should always get a second opinion.

Considering the circumstances I think that is a pretty solid group to start with for Powers. I was skeptical they would get anyone with major junior experience so to get a couple is a big win for them IMO.

I agree in the short team that Pat plugged the holes that he needed to fix. But in the case of Froats who was a high OHL draft pick from the Frontenacs at one time, never really panned out as a bonafide CHL player like he could have been. Too injury prone and a touch over-rated is the knock on him.

I think those are the guys STU has to be targeting right now though...they probably aren't going to be able to get the elite recruits at the moment so they should be going after once-highly touted guys that have seen their stock drop for whatever reason (be it injuries or whatever) and hope that they can get their career back on track.

RMC Hockey have announced 2 more recruits to join the team, starting this season.

Mitchell Hewson, a 5'10, 190lbs, Victoria, BC born defenseman, completed his junior hockey career with the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Hewson also played in the Kootenay International Junior League with teams such as Revelstoke Grizzlies, Creston Valley Thunder Cats and the Princeton Posse. He will be a cadet in the FYOP program.

Eric Liknes, a 6'3, 185lbs, Spruce Grove, Alberta native played 3 seasons with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he finished his overage season as Captain of the team. Crusader's GM/Coach Tim Fragle said of Liknes "RMC is getting a excellent person in Eric, he is matured beyond his years and will contribute in many ways to their hockey program" Liknes will study buisness administration at RMC.
