Deceiving as in his production isn't spread out evenly. But I do think that if he can get a point every..4-5 games..he'll be more useful that JJ would ever have be.
Did you assume it was? He's put up those points, just because they were in a few games doesn't mean he didn't get them. And, as stated, it's more effective then Jokinen's been all season.

This trade either works out well for us or it's neutral. Jokinen wasn't going to see many more games here and we have a second shot at some depth. I think when healthy we will see

Maroon - McDavid - Drai
Lucic - RNH - Pulju
Cagguila - Strome - Cam
Slepyshev - Letestu - Kassian
Khaira, Pakman

It's only 2 games but there's no way that Khaira should come out of the lineup. He, quite frankly, looks great and he's also versatile enough to play PK and slide over to center if need be but he does need to stay hungry which has been an issue for him. Slepy looks like the odd man out with Pulju showing that he belongs.
Realistically, all of Slepy, Cagguila and Khaira are on pretty equal footing but I think the versatility of the latter two gives them the edge.

I actually wouldnt mind dropping Letestu who has been useless this year. Make Khaira 4th line centre. That was the plan at the start of the year.

I don't know if Cammy gets in on Thursday and to be honest he should understand that. He should also understand like the three you listed at the bottom, along with Khaira and Pak that we have a lot of guys that are pretty much 4th liners. None of those guys really have proved themselves as 3rd liners or 4th liners with elite intangibles, until they do anyone could be eating popcorn on any given night.

Cammy has one thing none of those guys have and that's previous results as a guy that can put up points. If he isn't putting up points he's useless and will be benched until someone else fails.

One guy that could be coming out is Kassian. His role isn't to score, but he needs to be putting up some offense. Some games he doesn't look as physical either, so maybe he needs a wake up call.

Caggiulia really has a lot of garbage in his game. Better opponents expose this. On one shift last night on the 4 on 4 he turned the puck over 3 times. the last time exhibiting total lack of compete for the puck and it was in his own zone and resulted in a scoring chance with the game still being close. This is a small player that does not think the game well and that is inconsistent from shift to shift. I see very little in value from this player. In short I don't know why he's in an NHL lineup. He's not a checker, he's not good covering, theres just the thought that somehow he could be.

Slepy, Khaira, Pak at least offer size and Pak is very good defensively and very physical. Slepy is a better two way player than Cagg as well.

Khaira isn't going to knock Letestu off this team after two good games. The guy has consistency issues and I don't see PC trading a vet that has had a lot of success with this club just yet.

We're just not going to agree on this but I quite like Cagguila. He's the most consistent bottom 6 player along with Kassian at creating havoc on the forecheck and scoring chances. He does lack finish but that's the only glaring hole I see in his game in that role.

@redgrant. I don't like Letestu's game either but he's a coach favorite so he's not coming out.

I just think Cagguila adds a bit more speed and grit to the line up, hes more dynamic than players like Pakarinen.

That being said, I agree that he doesnt make a ton of smart plays at times and honestly he just doesnt capitalize much on his chances.

I just think TM overplays him at times. I think hes fine as 4th line player. I just shake my head when I see him on the PP over some of the other choices or when he plays way up on the lines.

Cagg creates chances at either end. Look for it. He chases play a lot. He's not a strong system player, he's not good positionally. Skating a lot, with some players just seems to hide some or the more obvious issues. A recent goal on the roadtrip everybody was blaming either Talbot or strome on a deflection. But it was Cagg getting way off the point giving the opposition all kinds of time to get the shot away. If theres busted gap control and Cagg is on the ice look at where he is on the ice.

For someone that is said to create chances they sure don't result in much, ever. Cagg is an easy to play against player that really brings very little to the forefront. I look at his play and can't find his niche, I wonder what it even is.

more dynamic? Pak made the play of the game defensively in the Caps game deftly diving to sweep a puck away during what was otherswise a breakaway. It was an outstanding play not only for the Coffeyesque puck sweep but that it was a forward reading the play, and back as last man when no D were to be found. This is a forward making a play that would be considered outstanding from any D. Hardly anybody noticed it. Pak also set up the Knaira goal doing the grunt work for that goal. Hardly anybody notice. yet in a 1-1 game he was key in the two most critical plays in the game. Pak consistenly is also one of our best current PK players and won the hardest shot on the team skills competition

Pak is the definition of an unsung unappreciated player. A smart player, unlike Cagg.

Agreed that there is absolutely no reason Cagg should be found on a PP. But I don't think he's suited for much of anything at the NHL level.

Isn't Kassian kind of like that, wasn't Pitlick? You need some players who create chaos to counterbalance the safe players. He does tend to skate in circles at times but this is a bottom 6 energy player, he's supposed to play with energy. He also has the ability to PK.

My issue with Slepy is that he doesn't bring much if he's not scoring. He's pretty good on the forecheck but he doesn't PK and doesn't score at a high level so he doesn't really have a defined role. I don't mind him as I think he has some skill but I just don't see his place in the lineup with Puljujarvi showing he belongs (thus far) and the Cammy addition.

I sorta meant hes more dynamic offensively. He creates more offensive or is part of more offensive chances. But like I said before he rarely does anything on his chances and rarely capitalizes on them.

I agree that Pakarinen is better defensively. I just think hes more focused and more determined defensively. Pakarinen has a pretty good shot but he doesnt get much done offensively.

But I can see your point. I think Pakarinen is just more consistent. You know what you are going to get from him on a nightly basis.

I agree. I like Slepshev but like you said, if hes not scoring, hes not doing much. Hes pretty much one dimensional which is fine because scoring is needed but hes not consistent enough scorer. I do like Slepshev in the lineup because he has a shooters mentality and this team doesnt have much of them.

If I'm a coach I'm wondering how much time Slepy is spending working on his shot which is often enough high and wide. Its the main thing that will either make, or break a career for him. He has a decent shot, awful accuracy. I like that he doesn't pad shots in to the chest but he's always going for corners, and usually missing.

So is this guy taking a 100 shots after practice or is he just skating off the ice. To me, that would speak volumes. I don't know which it is.

Outside of McDavid the whole team should be staying after practice. I wonder how many really are.

This is disconnected, but occasional part of Oilers tradition, that they used to have an after practic game where each player would have to alternate taking breakaways until they score. Invariably you'd have guys like Laraque, and Luke Richardson left trying to score and everybody already taking equipment off. Can't remember the goalie(maybe Cujo) but it was looking like they would be there taking shots until the next day. People were just laughing and their legs were literally falling off. They could hardly skate anymore. Finally one of the guys (It wasn't actually Laraque but it was some enforcer of the time) skates up, drops his stick and gloves and grabs the goalie and puts him in a headlock and brings him down.

One of the funniest things I ever watched in a rink. Still can't remember the player. He had a real sense of humor, always grinning, and he was a good puncher. It was around year 2000.

Except that Slepyshev kills penalties and he is a defensively responsible player. Not exactly the definition of a 1 dimensional player.

Yeah, I wonder about this sometimes how much some players seem to park themselves in the sunbelt on Obscure teams like Florida. To me it would be hard to have the same passion for the game playing in a place like Florida.

Somebody else mentioned that Jokinen was making mistake free hockey. I don't see it that way. He was losing a lot of pucks in opposition end and never showed puck battle here. He never even got engaged here. When you can remember a players only point in 2mths of play and the guy I supposed to be capable of production something is wrong.

When you have to think hard of a worse player performance here you know something was wrong.
Don't know about the first paragraph, I have seen teams and players from really small towns being more dedicated than any big market teams or players. But Sweden is not the same, the NHL is another animal which was very well explained by Hedman in the Players Tribune.

Anyhow, I like warm weather so if I'd be a hockey player I'd definitely look for employment in the sunbelt :)

However, for Jokinen who is from the very north of Finland I doubt he had any problems with the geographical position of edmonton. He also played pittsburg, brilliant team, horrible place to live.

If Slepy did play on the PK, it was only at the tail end of the PK. I don't remember him ever being a staple on either PK unit. He is pretty defensively responsible though.

Cammallari's numbers are deceiving. He got 4 of his 7 points in 1 game and 2 in another. This trade is basically a wash.
It is a wash at worst, I think that is the point. More of the same, in which case he'll be moved or just sit, or better.

I see no down side at all with this trade.

I think Cammaleri comes in for Pakarinen when he does play. I doubt he plays Thursday though.

Pakarinen kills penalties and is a defensive specialist who insures numbers back and is hard to play against.

The Oilers have struggled on the pk and they're going to pull Pak? I doubt it. He's been playing well.

This is the new NHL. The players continue to fight for less practice time in CBA negotiations. It's really nothing for the owners to give up, but it hurts when a team starts to struggle. If you have more than one thing to work on, good luck. Between your normal practice, there just isn't a lot of time to work on certain areas.

That's why I like when I hear guys hire a guy like Oates. At the very least you know they care about their skills and probably work on things more than others do. That and it sure would be nice if you are a guy like Nurse and you phone up Oates and ask something like what can I do to be quicker in my own end. Or heck I wonder if Oates ever phones and gives guys little tips. Nurse said changing something as simple as his lie of his stick helped his game last year.

Honestly the whole he plays on the PK really means nothing to me. It's funny him and Jokinen are apparently so good on the PK, but our PK sucked. Both are out and we have our best PK game of the year. Yes it's only 1 game, but sometimes this whole he kills penalties means nothing.
