Thanks for the update - I may not have the exact number but between fall of 2008 and fall of 2009 it was around 11 players that graduated. Both years they won the Memorial Cup - team now does not compare to the teams then but my whole point is it is all about your core players. If they stay the same them you can fill around them without much problem. Foudy, Cuylle, Rafkin, Robininson, Ladd, McDonald, Henault, Johnston and others are all back next year and are really the building blocks going forward. Nice to have Corcoran, Douglas, Angle back but at this point they are just bonus returns and it is the younger core that should be driving this team next year. At least in IMHO.

Agreed.
Younger players should get increased ice time. Vets less. Will c.

Yes that will go over big, team says to vets such as Boka, sorry Luke 14 goals plus 14,you gotta play less,we are winning too much,Stevenson, sorry Thomas nice bounceback from last year +15,u gotta play less,we dont need the wins, winning doesn't matter, Cole Purboo, sorry Cole gotta give up some ice,we are changing things, ice time for the kids, winning doesn't matter, they will learn, and then when they become vets, not as much ice for them,I am sure Windsor fans will be in favor, doubt it.
It's a process not a right.

Provided they don't move any before the draft Windsor will go into next year with:

5x 2NDS
3x 3RDS
5x 4THS
4x 5THS
6x 6THS

Not too bad but if they go all in they'll want to strengthen their draft board a bit before the season starts, particularly adding a couple of 2NDS and 3RDS. Not sure where they'll get those as any players who have the value to bring in the returns that'll help would also be players who would be needed on the roster as well. If they are looking at this getting them through the next couple of years as being competitive and pushing for long playoff runs, I don't think they have nearly enough to get things done as they'll be looking at replacing a minimum of 5 bodies from this years roster just to fill out the roster let alone any depth for injuries/suspensions and all that is provided everything goes their way and everyone returns, no one is moved to acquire picks etc.

While there are a couple of prospects who show some promise there's not a lot to be overly optimistic about. Yes things can change between now and training camp but at it stand?

Who is willing to report from the current pool of prospects and able to make the roster while contributing right away?

Tovell is one option in goal. Medina or Pirroinen would have to be moved and if Piiroinen were to be moved it's not optimal to have 2 18 year old goaltenders. Medina I would imagine has a full NTC so it could be tough to move him since Windsor went through a bit to get him here but he would probably carry a bit more value since he's not an import. I don't see any other realistic options in goal from who is currently in the system.

I don't see a lot of forwards lighting things up at lower levels right now. A couple of 03s have some promise so maybe by the time training camp rolls around they'll be ready for the next step.

There's a couple of D who could be more shutdown style D that could be solid additions if they'll report.

Cade Webber is drafted, committed to Boston U but is currently playing in BC. Does he have an issue with grades or is their D simply too deep for him to crack the roster? If it's grades or some other reason besides strength of roster you have to wonder why Windsor is on the outside looking in at this point. Strength of roster I can understand.

Zak Kruszewski we already know should be able to crack the roster, should have been here this year as a 7th/8th D just to ensure the commitment but if a team is going to pinch pennies they take the risk of losing him down the road. From what was said by those who saw training camp he was right on the edge of being ready so that was a mistake IMO.

Spencer Evans was a kid there was always hope he was going to report but after not coming to camp this year, having a commitment to Brown I don't think we see him unless he gets drafted and directed here by whoever drafts him. After this past offseason I have a feeling that ship has sailed.

Owen Shier may have one last shot this year but the training camp reports weren't very good so I'm not betting on him showing up and being a contributor. If he were to make the team it would be a Stevenson situation and if this team thinks they will be competing the next couple of years I don't think he has a realistic shot.

Ethan Strakey is a USNTDP kid with a commitment to Notre Dame so it's unlikely Windsor ever sees him here. If he did report it probably wouldn't be until the 2021/22 season at the earliest. He would be the only offensive D out of the group who could have a shot.

I don't think there is anyone else with a realistic shot of making the team or reporting (Fensore) from the current D prospects.

James Doyle could have some promise. He wasn't at training camp though and while he didn't have a commitment when he was drafted he has since made a commitment. I think he is probably 2021/22 at the earliest once he has gone through his draft year.

Sutter Muzzatti had some nice numbers when he was drafted. Not looking as good yet this year but not terrible. As an 03 he could have a shot next year but likely would be a fourth line/rotated player if next year is a year Windsor tries to compete. I doubt we see him if that's the type of role he would be coming into. No commitment so you never know but likely 2021/22 after his draft year is the earliest we would see him. Another one who wasn't at camp.

Ben Felicitti has some decent numbers but he is only playing Midget this year so that would be a big jump to Major JR.

Hunter McKown is a USNTDP player with no commitment. He was a flier pick who they should have had high hopes for but right now his numbers don't show him as someone who would contribute at this level. With no commitment and potentially no other options he may be willing to report but would he contribute enough to justify the cost?

Luke Tuch is another USNTDP player with a Boston U commitment. He's putting up decent numbers and would be a solid addition but his brother never showed up to Guelph so it's doubtful we ever see him in Windsor.

Johnny Ulicny is putting up decent numbers but hasn't been able to crack the roster the last two years. Is he still an option at this point? I don't know how much he would commit but being a year where they will need to have some players who can step in he may fit the bill.

McKay Hayes is similar to Owen Shier. He was expected to push for a roster spot this season but didn't have a great camp. He looks like he's getting a bit better as his season goes on and like Ulicny he may fit the bill if spots open up unexpectedly. Can he show well in camp?

Cade Lemmer has no commitment and was expected to be pushing for a roster spot this year but never showed up for camp. I think the offseason mess kept him away. Currently playing in the USHL his numbers are nothing special so whether he could still have a spot going forward is questionable.

Tanner Kelly is the same as Lemmer only he has a commitment to MSU. Playing USHL, numbers are nothing special and he's still pretty small. I doubt we ever see him in Windsor.

There's not much else with Windsor's current forward prospects. The ones I listed as having the potential to make the team next year in some instances I think that's a very generous thought.

Going into next year, if any of Angle/Douglas/Corcoran/Afanasyev graduate combined with the lack of prospect depth and the lack of picks this team will be in a worse position to start the year than this year. Of course things can change, we can draft 3 or 4 04 surprises that come in like Cuylle and Foudy and contribute from day 1 but I'm not expecting that. With 5 roster spots minimum to fill, potentially more if there's any unexpected graduations or any players dealt in the offseason this team will struggle to take advantage of another good start, moreso than this year.

I think that's where the disconnect lies. People can list every prospect under the sun but fact remains there are more players in a draft that fail to report than actually do. Then even with the ones that do report they don't always produce. You have a team that left 7-8 cards on the table. There's absolutely nothing stopping Bowler or the Spits from signing a prospect right now. Considering how much room they have why aren't they signing anyone??

If you don't believe Playfair is returning why not just use a couple assets and upgrade on him? It isn't far fetched to think Playfair would be hard pressed to find consistent ice time as a forward on 14-16 other teams. Then you have Maggio where you spent 2 2nd rounders I can't imagine you couldn't have used those 2nd's and upgrade the team in some fashion. Considering what a couple players went for whether it was a 2 or 3 or a couple 3rds. There definitely was room for movement.

Any and all prospects that might be a factor for this team are already signed and playing for someone else. You would have to have that team release the player so they can play for the Spits. The odds of that happening are extremely low - does happen like the Goalie that just came to the Soo but is definitely not a common occurrence. Any prospect that they are working with would likely come over in the off season like Egor did. Some kids will quit schools but there is ( if I'm not mistaken) a buyout required for that, can't see the Savages ponying up for that.

Mississauga signed Rylan Bowers a 12th rounder from 2018 draft who they signed on Jan 11th?? He played for Listowel this year and he's now playing for Mississauga. The only thing preventing the Spitfires from signing a guy right now is they either aren't interested in signing, aren't good enough or having a poor year. Like you said at the end and that's most important if the Savage's aren't interested in ponying up then something needs to be done.

Mississauga only has 23 players on their roster,a couple of injuries upfront, plus trading Varga prior to the injuries left them with 11 forwards major reason why they signed him,in Windsor's case unless a player can crack the top 11,I would not sign a player, and I dont see any Canadian forward in the system at this that I would have signed, with 13 forwards, plus Rupoli who can go upfront if neccessary dont see need to sign anybody.
Any American prospect 17 and under had to be signed by Dec 31 to play this year.
Like I said dont see anyone ready to beat out the 13 forwards already here.
Doesn't mean that there are some who will vie for a job next year.

Yes, beat that the Savage's are cheap drum for a few days. At least it has teeth.

You had the correct theory that younger players should play. You just have the application of it all screwed up.
It doesn't mean they get top 6 minutes. Unless their talent dictates that with the elite talents. What playing the kids means is they get to see the ice, a few shifts a game & play in advantageous situations for them.
I'm no fan of the coaching staff but this one makes you look stupid.

So again, I'd suggest using the Savage's are cheap & personally I really like the Spits got lucky after every win. 25x lucky. Awesome. That one is golden.

Youngblood is right. It doesn’t have to be a complete role reversal. But giving the younger guys who will be here for a few more years more responsibility. A little PP and PK time. Play them at the end of periods, etc. These are the kids that will be your cornerstones in the next few years. Give them some experience in bigger situations once in a while.

Exactly. Look at Johnston; he's been given a bigger role in the top six and he's run with it. We've gone from "oh, Johnston's getting ice?" to "Johnny looks great out there!" His confidence has skyrocketed and he's doing what he can to produce. This is going to be invaluable to him next season.

Agree on Johnston is developing nicely got his chance and has run with it,others have been given opps ie Maggio,McDonald and Zito, lines are what they re playing time, bottom lines things are working out 1st place in standings is proof positive.

Some interesting thoughts on the vets vs rookies.

For the most part the vets have earned their spots. Playfair is the one exception and playing the kids ahead of him from here on would really be the sensible thing.

If you go back to the start of the year before Playfair was dropped to the fourth line whatever combination of Zito/Johnston/Maggio/McDonald played they gave the most consistent effort, chipped in a few points and you could see all four showing their potential.

All were given chances on other lines, mainly with Foudy and Cuylle and while all kept up, contributed in many ways including on the scoresheet none were given more than a few games and some were splitting those games with each other. Those chances were under less than optimal conditions and they all did fine.

When they've struggled it's been with Playfair on the fourth line. For the most part they've proven to be better at contributing than him while all have played fewer games.

Plain and simple, Playfair out and the kids in will settle the vets vs rookies debate. Who is producing more? Who needs to start seeing, if only slightly expanded roles to provide more options going forward?

The rest of the vets can still play their roles, the team is playing for something but with Boka, Purboo gone and Playfair not likely back it's time to get the kids a bit more regular experience in different situations. Circumstances need to be taken into account but they still need to be developed as options now and main pieces going forward.

you do realize everyone who played with the foudy and Cuylle line struggled? Hard to play with a kid that nobody knows what he’s going to do next. He played with Angle and that didn’t workout for him. I think someone mentioned it before, hard to find players who can play with Foudy.

I just saw that London is planning to retire Patrick Kane's jersey. Don't get me wrong... Kane had a great season when he played for the Knights but that was it... he played only one season. Is that enough to warrant retiring someone's number? Kane had 145 points in the OHL. As a comparison, Luke Boka has played 5 years in Windsor, has been the captain for two, currently has 130 points and could possibly pass Kane by the end of the season. Should we retire his jersey as well.... no, I'm not suggesting that Boka is deserving of having his number retired... I'm just comparing what the two players have done in their OHL careers. I personally don't think that Kane did enough with the London Knights in the OHL to warrant having his number retired.

you do realize everyone who played with the foudy and Cuylle line struggled? Hard to play with a kid that nobody knows what he’s going to do next. He played with Angle and that didn’t workout for him. I think someone mentioned it before, hard to find players who can play with Foudy.

I do realize no one has really done exceptionally well as a line with Cuylle and Foudy. That wasn't the point.

The point was the kids have done as well as anyone else, the kids have been shuffled around while being given little chance to succeed higher up the roster, the kids have done fine as a unit without the vets yet the kids still get rotated out so Playfair can stay in every game while doing very little as a vet to help the development of the kids.

It wasn't a knock on the kids it was about one vet who they are all outplaying getting the minutes ahead of them while the limited opportunities they've been given to move up have been very limited and less than optimal.

M2M, I don't see Windsor winning in OS but losing at home to Hamilton. Also don't see beating London on the road, but losing to them at home. Switch those around, sure.

I don't like retiring numbers in the first place, taking the jersey out of circulation has never made much sense overall. I prefer the alternative of actually honoring the jersey. That player can still get their night of the jersey being honored but future players still get the ppportunity of wearing that jersey.
