There's a fair number of secondary assists that shouldn't actually be counted as assists. Much less so with primaries.

The entire concept of secondary assists is weird, and it’s weird that assist are counted as equals to goals. Not a lot of sports count assists as a primary stat to begin with, and even fewer an arbitrary secondary assist at that.

But that’s just how things are measured atm. There’s a ton of advanced stats that can be utilized to make any point.

No... I said a primary assist counts as much as a secondary assist as a goal, because none of them are weighted in point totals. Hence it’s rare to bring up primary assists. Nothing wrong with it but it isn’t the strongest argument to make.

Not rare. People have talked about it for years, much like ES scoring but now that two Leafs are good at it, it's like folks never heard the discussions before. Geez I've been on hockey boards for over a decade and those things were being discussed back when I started.

Question is, is Marner more fortunate than any other winger to have such an elite high scoring centre?

Same goes for Rantanen.

Gaudreau and Wheeler, not so much. Imagine if they were next to Matthews.

Their teams have tons of offensively skilled players, especially Wheeler.

Let’s be honest here. The only reason we are talking about primary assists is because it favors Marner.

He’s a great player but it’s still far too early to say he’s the best playmaking winger in the league. He’s had a good start for 20+ games, that’s all. There are players with far more pedigree in that list.

What about the 45 games at the end of last season?

Actually i just had a quick look in the discussions of all nhl teams and ALOT of teams have 3 times and some even 5 times as less threads then the leafs, twice is rare.

So if you take that into consideration, dividing by two is actually really conservative.

Defense and passing. Skating is too close to call but maybe an edge to Marner there, stickhandling and shooting go to Gaudreau.

MacKinnon is much better than Tavares. Marner is the best player on his line, Rantanen is not.
