Everyone talks about Markstrom,Tanev,Toffoli. Tyler Moote is about as valuable as the top 3..He killed it in the playoffs....warrior mode. Deserves a huge pay raise imo.
I like the player for what he is but I'm not so sure about giving a 4th liner any kind of term (unless he plays center).

At least LE had his uses (however limited they were - eg., defensively). Schaller was just a waste of oxygen.i wonder what boston fans were saying about re-signing schaller that summer after his 12 goal season...
i love motte but i would not give him more than two years. i mean,

If this guy can be tied for the team lead in goals basically tethered to a center like Jay Beagle, then yes--he deserves to move up the lineup. Kid was a scorer in the NCAA, but was stamped as a checker and energy guy after stops in Chicago and Columbus. You can see, he does have some skill. So, is what we're seeing a sign that the Canucks really have a player in Motte, someone who could be, say, a long-term above average fourth liner, or a decent third-liner on a contender? Or is it a blip? Goals aside, how do people think he's playing?

I guess what I'm most interested in is whether he's proving to be an intelligent player away from the puck, whether he projects to be a guy who could be used on a line that would be effective against another team's top players, or, in other words, to be blunt about it, whether he could end up being vaguely comparable to Janik Hansen, which would be awesome.

I think the goals Motte has scored have been opportunistic goals that come off of his hard work. In the past, he has slowed down whether it was due to nagging injuries or something else. If Motte can maintain his level of play and be a 15-20 goal guy rather than a guy who inevitably gets hurt and puts up 10 then he's a 3rd line guy. He's in his prime right now and we shouldn't worry about keeping him long term right now.
Noting that he wasn't exactly a full-time regular with other teams, my concern is that he's historically been pretty consistent. His goals per 60 have been remarkably similar over his previous seasons and his possession number have been consistently below average. His defensive deployment has also been consistent though so we haven't exactly seen him play a role where he is closer to 50/50 in zone starts.
Overall, I think Motte has developed into a good contributor for the team. He's the type of player we think about when we talk about getting cheap and valuable depth from drafting and developing players.
Doesn’t have to be a C but you have to get great PK from them plus an element of something like speed, checking, Physicality.Yeah. Motte has been a great find. He's the sort of energy/depth "role player" you want to find and/or develop, on cheap, short-term contracts of a year or two at a time. You can't get too attached to these types though. You have to be ready and willing to let these guys go, and cycle new pieces through when the time comes. Signing guys like this to that "one extra contract too many" is how you end up with situations like Roussel/Beagle/et al. Motte probably has one more 1-2 year deal if he can continue at this sort of level through this year and next and is still asking a reasonable cap number...and then you should probably be cutting him loose.
If he does suddenly start looking like a solid, reliable 15G+ 30-35pts+ sort of player with real shutdown/matchup ability rather than more of a 10G-20pts sort of energy guy, maybe you start to entertain the idea of a longer-term deal and keeping him around with a little bit more certainty. But that seems highly unlikely to materialize at this stage in his career. Better to just appreciate him for what he is, and take things as they go.
It's a ruthless business, but that's the reality of how you have to approach things if you want to have a cost-efficient bottom-6. If you're going to be committing a bit of "luxury" money to any sort of bottom-6 forward role players, it pretty much has to be a Center to justify it at all imo. Which Motte is not.
