I'm excited about the Ozarks setting. The Bayou was such a massive part of what made the first season so good. Obviously depends which way they approach it, but I feel like you can really build up a creepy/brooding atmosphere in the Ozarks (FWIW I've never seen the show Ozark).

Did you see Winters Bone? If not, I highly recommend it. And yes, the Ozarks is capable of some great atmosphere.

season 2 was pretty great. I remember people feeling lost and not having things be fully explained to them. However when i binged watched it , it was a straight forward plot that was very good.

How about the horrid green screen behind Colin Farrell while driving in the season finale?

Or McAdams' dreadful cult/escort club storyline?

Season 2 was crap, with or without Season 1.

RT gave it 63% which is mighty generous.

i disagree. Season one blew everyone away, nothing could meet its expectations. Season 2 on its own is solid television.

Give evidence of its quality

You didn't really give much "evidence" of it's lack of quality to be honest.

Season 1 was clearly better, but Season 2 wasn't bad. A few things I thought were good:

  • The performances were generally good. Farrell for me was the stand out, but I didn't have a problem with the others.
  • Plenty of good scenes like when Ray was being chased, infiltrating that party and going to that drug lab or whatever it was.
  • Setting was a big part of Season 1 and while it wasn't as good in Season 2 I still appreciated it.
  • Ray and Frank not making it, though in Frank's case I thought it was pretty stupid how it happened.
  • The noir feel of it at times.
I think they could have used another episode or two. Gone a bit deeper with some of the characters.

I thought Vince Vaughn stood out the most. The character he played was such a departure from what we are used to seeing Vaughn do. His performance was excellent and showed a versatility I didn't think he had in him.

I've kept the same opinion about Season 2 ever since the 6th episode. Season 1 was so amazing, Pizzalatto spent like 10 years writing it I think. Then in less than a year he had to crank out an entirely new story that was on the same level as Season 1. I spent the first 6 episodes of Season 2 waiting for it to reach those epic levels of the first season until i finally realized it was just never going to happen. On its own, Season 2 was not bad, even pretty good at times. But following up Season 1, and for it not to bring the same intensity and quality, it didn't stand a chance.

Individually I thought all the main actors did a great job, the show just had a real tough time coming together as a whole and I think you blame the writing/directing on that.

It's been a couple of years now so I have a little more faith that Pizzolatto makes sure Season 3 will be better. I've liked Mahershala Ali ever since he was in "Benjamin Button" and the director Saulnier is a little unknown to me but I thought "Green Room" was pretty cool.

I liked the season but I am kind of conflicted on this point. I actually think he played the role in a textbook Vince Vaughn way. It was just a different sort of role for him. I think it might have been the writing or possibly even the directing that failed with respect to his character. On one hand he played it fantastically for a wannabe gangster - all bluster and BS (trademark VV), but not really having the goods to play with the big boys. On the other hand his backstory was genuinely gangster (albeit low level) - tough and violent enough to put him in a position of relative respect and give him some goons. I think that aspect of the character just didn't translate.

It's funny you say "epic" because I think the main fault with season 2 was that it went too big. Season 1 had more implied conspiracy whereas Season 2 it dragged the grand conspiracy out into the relative open and it was too much to write well.

I thought his performance was good but I don't think it measured up to Farrell's. In fact of the four main stars I thought he was the worst, but not by a big margin and that doesn't mean it was bad. I think some of it was the writing too. That scene at the end where he dies was poorly done if you ask me.

Some good points.
  • I thought Season 2 had it's moments, some of the ones I referenced for example. In fact I would say those were big moments and really good scenes. However the difference between the two seasons is that Season 1's big moments were even bigger/better and overall Season 1 was consistently just great. I don't think there wasn't an episode that wasn't really good.
  • Great point on how fast it came on the heels of Season 1 and I think the writing and directing didn't hold up as well. However I would say the performances didn't hold up to Season 1 either. I mean across the board Season 1 was much better in terms of performances, even down to the minor characters.
  • I'd love to see what Jean-Marc Vallee could do with the show. I like what he did with Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects.

I am one of the few people who HATED TD#1. I thought it was awful and haven't watched since.
