This was the case in the AHL too when Gordon put him on the right. We are lucky enough to have Travo Sandheim's cult leader and soul mate, @Stizzle, who can comment on this.

Yes, Gordon used to make Travo play the right side when paired with Hagg in the AHL. Which made no sense, since Hagg operates just the same on the left or right. He did the same when Travo was paired with Morin, but that was understandable.

Alas that was not Gordon's worst sin involving Sanheim in the AHL. Giving TJ Brennan every, and all, power play minutes over young Travo was peak Hextall development model.

LOL the amount of crap getting thrown around in the thread is just idiotic. Fools saying things like “Provorov will be an issue going forward”. I guess they don’t remember when Mark Streit was our best dman. Sure he’s struggled this year, but who didn’t. He’s been a lot better the past 2 months. 25 minute a night dman who will put up 35-50 points going forward, sign me up

It seems like people want Provorov to be Doughty because that's who he's been compared to for whatever reason. For me he's always been our Ryan Suter and that's exactly what we need him to be.

Provy has finished:

30th
8th
and this year 32nd

...in ES scoring. How about we just be happy that he is a guy to go against top lines and he can produce in the top 30.

Meanwhile, we have Ghost who has finished 30th and 17th in ES scoring and also has the ability to be tops in PP in the league.

Oh...and our guy Sanheim is 19th in ES points all while being suppressed earlier this year. Let's rejoice that we currently have 3 guys that can be top 20 in ES scoring....and Myers is just scratching the surface on what he can become.

It's still happening months after Hextall left.

Had no idea he has 10 points in last 10 games and 16 points in last 18 games... VERY quietly with 31 points in 68 games... UNREAL!!

JJ and Clement last night pointing out Gordon getting much better play out of the kids, who - for some unknown and unexplored ereason - didn’t step up earlier in the season. That, you see is the difference between Gordo and Haktools records.

Gee, maybe actually PLAYING Sanheim might lead to him being more productive? F’n schmucks.

Gordons doing nothing other than actually letting Sanheim and Lindblom play.

The players are doing everything now that they're actually on the ice, exactly as we said they would. All they needed was for the coach to get out of the way.

Unfortunately this idiot is now being detrimental to guys like TK, our 2nd leading goalscorer.... but baby steps, I guess.

I think what Gordon is trying to do is balance his scoring lines. JVR-Patrick-Giroux is essentially the sheltered scoring line, while Lindblom-Couts-Voracek does everything and will get the tough matchups at home.

He wants to use Laughton as the secondary defensive center, and figures TK can carry a line offensively by himself. JVR is useless without offensive talent around him to feed him, while Konecny can create offense on his own. I get the logic. So far (1 game) you'd have to say it's working OK.

Since Jan 31:

Sanheim is 4th in D scoring with that 16 points in 18 games. He is tied for 2nd in ES points during that time.

It's not an absurd Shooting luck thing either -- 5v5 oiSP under 10%. Most of the other leaders are in the 11-13% range.

Nothing surprising about Sanheim scoring, the issue, as with TK, and rookie Ghost, is developing a two way game.
You're not going to go far in the playoffs with a bunch of one dimensional scorers who can't/won't play defense.
Sanheim has improved this year, but still has a lot of work to do.

For a defenseman, playing better defense often leads to more scoring simply b/c if you take the puck away from the other team, and you can skate it up ice, you will pick up those secondary assists. Whereas if you spend a shift trapped in your D-zone, you're not going to score a lot of points.

The idea that being fundamentally sound on defense will hurt your scoring is pretty much a myth, it's more just a matter of mental awareness and paying attention to details and the willingness to skate back as hard as you skated into the O-zone. Winning puck battles is a matter of strength, technique and attitude. None of this impacts scoring. Defensive defensemen don't score because most simply lack those skills.

A Giroux-Patrick-TK line doesn't need to be sheltered. They played together for a few games and looked dominant, constantly spending shifts in the offensive zone and getting tons of chances.

It worked out last game because he got a breakaway and the Islanders suck, but TK on that 3rd line is a complete waste of his scoring ability because there's nobody to get him the puck. He's a legit top line player, our 2nd best goal scorer, and needs to be used properly.

I'd definitely shelter them until Patrick grows up.

Neither Giroux or TK are going to win a lot of board battles, and while Patrick is stronger, he's a couple years away from physical maturity (compare his play to Lindblom).
It's a skill line that will struggle on defense for now. TK lacks defensive instincts and still has too many mind fart plays. And Patrick is learning on the job.

Not that Gudas is chopped liver, but remember the beginning of the year Travis was 3rd pairing. And that's with the two of them playing well, good numbers, and the former HC said to effect, "nah, they got a role, we're not gonna change, nor expand, it. Let them excel in the (sic)crumbs they are working with already."
