So if by end of year, we're still not out of the first round of the playoffs, I'm expecting, radical changes.

I'll be looking to spread out the money, and move one of our core players similar to how Boston got rid of Joe Thornton and Philadelphia got rid of Eric Lindros.

This is extremely fanatical/ video game like, but it actually works cap wise. So this is how I'd blow the whole thing up

If an American market wins the draft lottery, try and Trade Matthews for Alexis Lafrenière.
Let Ceci walk. Trade Barrie. With Matthews That's 19 million outgoing. Use that 19 million on:

  • Sign Lafrenière. (ELC***)
  • Sign Alex Pitrenagelo (UFA)
  • Sign Taylor Hall (UFA)
  • Trade Muzzin+Barrie for Manson. Ducks fans are interested in Barrie because they need a PP specialist. For some reason they are interested in this, though reality would likely be a different story but i've seen far worse fleeces in real life.

Lafrenière-Tavares-Marner (form the next super line, but actually better then Boston's).
Hall---Nylander-Kapanen (Hall/Nylander will give us slightly less or similar production to Matthews/Nylander)

Rielly-Manson
Dermott-Pitreangelo.

Best top 4 in the NHL. 2 elite d-man, an elite RHD shutdown defensmen and one of the better upcoming d-men in the game.

Basically turning Matthews, Muzzin and scrubs into Laffeniere, Hall, Pitreangelo and Manson. We get way better on RD, way better overall.

Points:

Marner - 90-100
Laffeniere: 90-100
Tavares: 90-100
Hall: 81
Rielly: 68
Nylander: 60
Pitreangelo: 56

Maybe see if Chicago is willing to trade Murphy. Maybe Ceci and Petan for Murphy and Perlini.

I've seen enough of Ceci and Barrie. Neither are very good. Yes I'd love to send them packing but then who will be this team's top 4 right side D?

I'd substitute Barrie for an average defensive RHD making similar money right now. That would be a better fit on this team.

If money wasn't a consideration, Ceci on the 3rd pairing would work just fine.

Barrie is a UFA next year and his cap hit is low because the AVs retained. That does not translate into a good return IMO. Dubas has taken us down this path and his only move is to fire Babcock or he will join Babs on the hot seat unless something changes soon.

I move Mitch before any of our big guys.

Nylander has C versatility and a significantly lower cap hit, plus Marner gone would hopefully get rid of a complacency issue that is plaguing the team.

A lot of teams would be interested in Marner, but I think Minnesota, Columbus and NYI are the likeliest partners.

From Minnesota: Dumba + Greenway + ?

From Columbus: Savard + Anderson ++ ?

From Islanders: Dobson/Pulock + Bailey + ?

Of course, this can all change, if the Leafs start playing well.

Edit: I’d also move Barrie+extension to Anaheim for Manson+Eaves

Some things to think about

Part of problem this year is injuries to Tavares, Hyman and Dermott--and playing backup goalie against the tougher team (often a division rival) on b2b games

The D will change radically next year--Barrie and Ceci will be replaced by Sandin and Dermott. Muzzin will be signed only if reasonable--. That will be a saving of several millions. Combined with any cap increase the Leafs will be in better shape.

Somehow we expect Sandin and possibly Liljegren, or even Dermott will be better players out of the gate, with top pairing, or top four minutes? That kind of sounds like a recipe for a disaster to me. We are going to need at minimum, one guy to play top pairing, at minimum, as supporting role like Hainsey did with Rielly... if not, a guy like Pietrangelo.

There was speculation within the last year that the Leafs had interest in Ekblad. I wonder if that speculation will resurface again this season.

Nah.

His injuries put me off. They don't really need Nylander and we can't add the extra cap hit anyway.

Here’sa trade that would definitely shake up this team while I think making us better overall

To Toronto-
Jones
Dubois
Anderson
1st Round Pick

To Columbus-
Matthews
Barrie
Johnson

Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Anderson-Dubois-Nylander
Mikeyhev-Kerfoot-Kapanen
Moore-Goat-Timoshov

Reilly-Jones
Muzzin-Dermott
Sandin-Ceci/Holl

Off season you let Muzzin and Ceci walk and you sign Pietrangelo for 7yrs/9 million

Reilly-Pietrangelo
Dermott-Jones
Sandin-Liljegren

I'm actually looking forward to it. Not overly impressed with either Barrie or Ceci this year. Would love to see us look at an early trade for a quality bottom pairing D and a gritty forward.

You somehow proposed a trade to trade Matthews, but still keep Marner:facepalm:
Also Matthews isn't going anywhere.

Some of these proposals lmao. Chill out. Breath.

What this team really needs is a coaching change.

He's a legit #1 right-handed defenseman. He's on a long term contract and a very reasonable number. He has had some injuries in the past, but he's coming off back to back heathy seasons.

Florida would be moronic to make that trade.

I'd be fine (thrilled?) with the Ducks trade. Fine with Pietrangelo signing.

I move Marner before Matthews though. Hall is a great player, but I'm not sure he balances the team out any. We've got some pretty good skill on this team, we just don't seem to have any jam, or sense of team, sticking up for each other.... Hall and Lafreniere aren't going to help that. I don't know how to make the trade... but something around Marner for Josh Anderson +

Mikheyev - Tavares - Josh Andersen
Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Johnsson Kerfoot Kapanen
Korshkov Goat Engvall

Rielly Pietrangelo
Dermott Manson
Sandin Liljegren

I think Kapanen and/or Johnson are the prime trade candidates. They both have value and we would be trading from a position of strength.

A deal for a top 6 PWF or top 4D would be ideal with Hyman then sliding into the lineup. I like Kapanen more, but Johnson probably has more value to this team as a LW. Also get Ceci off this team.

Even if both Johnson and Kapanen go in a trade the Leafs can still run:

Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Korshkov - Matthews - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Moore
Timashov - Goat - Shore/Spezza

Rielly - XXXX
Muzzin - Barrie
Dermott - Holl

Andersen
Hutch

This clears up roughly 9.5 mill.

In the event of an injury you have a Bracco call up for skill replacement, Sandin/Lilly for D, Korshkov or Engvall for some jam

We certainly need a coaching change before any drastic roster overhaul.

That would be the smart and obvious choice, it's way easier getting rid of the coach than turning over the roster without getting screwed on value
