We're talking about hockey tickets.

Who's depressed? You told another poster to get off his lazy ass and work harder so he can afford tickets. That's misguided and ignorant, and I explained why it was naive to think that. I also explained why it's unfair to blame both the suits and the working class fans when neither are the actual problem. And you responded with something about terrorism, presumably because you don't know a thing about sociology or anthropology.

but a good socialist like yourself should know that in the modern era sports has eclipsed religion as the opiate of the masses, seems to me that you are in fact perpetuating the social inequalities you bemoan by talking hockey and thereby affirming to others that sport matters in a world fuelled by endless class warfare

tsk, tsk

I can get them for less than face value myself. The problem is face value is still way too much for 90% of the population. MLSE is just too greedy. They don't have to charge that much for tickets but they do because suits will pay. They sacrifice tradition and atmosphere for money.

The sad thing is I bet like only 10% of their revenue is based on gate traffic. I refuse to pay for a companies pure greed.

Wow, talk about the politics of envy!

I think a lot of people are getting away from the actual point of this discussion. Let's make some noise at the games. Gotta support the team.

Ah, so you don't disagree with what I said? Seeing as you keep changing the subject, I can only conclude that to be the case. See how much more relaxed you feel when you just admit you were wrong? :)

You're welcome.

I see people trying to defend the sh! tty expierence at the ACC.why it sucks 4sure.

Play-offs would go a long way to fixing that, and a team just like we have now with all the toughness as a flair as a template going forward would eliminate the quietness eventually.

I liked when we were hated more lol.

I'm not sure what would increase it, although I've mentioned changing the acoustics numerous times. Perhaps amplifying the sound somehow? Sounds pathetic, but then so is the amount of noise we hear. I recall the Gardens being rowdy. Loved seeing games there. I recall being at the second-last row in the purples back in the 90's. You could touch the beginning of the domed ceiling, haha, and barely hear anything because of the noise.

Ah, I get it. You don't like it when someone refuses to be distracted by red herrings. But hey, keep bringing up terrorism and misquotations of Marx to deflect your ignorance of the subject matter. Whatever makes you sleep at night. :)

ACC can get plenty loud, it was loud all the time in the early 00's. Not hard to draw the line, we won a lot more then, and had something of a dirty, physical brand of hockey. Build it and the noise will come.

I haven't actually been since...hmm, actually it was the last game of the reason when the Leafs eliminated the Habs (and the Islanders eliminated us the following night). It was crazy there, but I haven't actually sat in the lower bowl of a Leaf game since Gardens. I'm still hoping we meet the Habs in the playoffs this year. I think that would be perfect for the sound.

this is what we're capable of.
When the Leafs are winning.
(and you know, we've got some playoff action)

Geneerally for the most part, the ACC is a quietish place, and I don't think there's anything really wrong with it. If there's something to cheer about, they'll cheer, if the play is good off the hop, there'll be a GLG going on. if the play sucked (ie: we got robbed of something), there will be a huge boo. They are loud but it's more of a "what have you done for me lately"

and for the most part the answer is a big fat nothing.
8 years (well 6 years of actually playing full seasons and no playoffs), poor pathetic play at home for a few of those years, it's not going to inspire a whole lot of love.

but it's really chicken vs. egg too.

you go anywhere else, and the Leaf Fans are very noticable (Florida, Ottawa, Buffalo, Montreal). Is it to mess with the other team? (yes) is it that tickets are more affordable (I'm assuming yes?)

We ARE a hockey culture in Toronto but we're also... different. It's hard to artiiculate. But I don't hate on the suits. the Suits are what makes OUR team

A: valuable
B: give them money that allows us to go for free agents and not really be hurting for it (even in a cap era).

Knowledgeable, and grossly engaged. To me the lack of crowd noise while play is ongoing is mostly just the crowd at large paying very close attention. Where there ought to be noise, there's noise.

Ding ding ding. Obviously you actually go to games. :handclap:

Sure people higher up might miss a minute or even two at the beginning of a period. But a lot of the best seats seem to be empty damn near half the game.

Problem is we have too large of a fanbase and a huge financial division. It's the die hard fans that generally cant afford to spend 100$+ per game, while the 'suits' can. As a Business the owners would be stupid to not keep the prices high. It's gonna be sold out regardless whether they sell tickets for 50$ to average people, or 100$ to corporations. If you're the owner and a business man you'd be stupid not to have high prices. That's why we need owners who actually care about the team more than their bank statements. It went from being a sport to a business and as long as it stays that way, so will ticket prices.

It's getting worse every year. I remember when the ACC first opened, maybe a few seats were empty at the opening faceoff, but within minutes the place would be packed. Fast forward to 2013 and the building looks like this for the first 10 minutes of every period:

empty%20seats_thumb%5B1%5D.jpg

That is NOT an exaggeration, by the way. A large percentage of the lower bowl is completely empty for a full 50% of every period. The suits much prefer to nibble on their sushi, suck back a few martini's, and hob nob with their corporate clones instead of actually watching the game.

These people should just be cordoned off inside the platinum sushi bar, and let real fans buy those unused seats.

I take it you have never sat in seats with access to the Platinum lounge. You go down between periods and eat/drink for free. Time flies and the period has normally started before you notice. You try to jam a few more bites in, then when you walk up the stairs they hold you until a stop in play.

I would love to see it change, as I hate the way it looks, but it is unrealistic for many reasons.

'suits' can be die hards.

I'm probably what you would probably refer to as a suit and I go to lots of games, sometimes in a suit. I don't scream my head off, sometimes I even talk about things not related to the game with whomever I'm there with but I am definitely a die hard fan.

I doubt there is an owner in North American major league sports that doesn't try and maximize ticket revenue.

yeah i was going to mention that

i just see the whole "suits" thing as a smokescreen for less successful people to howl at the moon
