Aren't they currently having problems signing Rantanen?

And in the future will have to sign Makar?

I dunno, Tavares signing with the Leafs, and the bind that has put them in, seems like a cautionary tale.

It’s a term issue apparently. They have the space. I don’t think the cap will really become an issue for them until their D comes off ELC and then the year after that they have to figure out what happens with Mackinnon. He won’t sign another steal contract. That’s a way off though. I can’t see them being cheap if Hall wanted to go there for cap issues 2-3 years down the road from next offseason.

They could legitimately take a run at a cup before Nate becomes a UFA, which is when they should really feel a squeeze.

I feel like some of you guys are just mentally-preparing for the worst.

Me, I'm remaining cautiously optimistic. Hall doesn't seem like he has one hand on the door.

Status quo.

The thought he is leaving isn’t really based on any evidence right now outside the fact he hasn’t signed yet. Hall really hasn’t tipped his hand either way. Saying you want to win his vague and non-committal. He obviously can win here just as much as he could win a bunch of other places. There isn’t really a sure fire cup out there for him anywhere. Especially when you factor in who can afford him.

It’s mostly hurt feelings from other guys who left.

The only hard information we have is that his agent and Shero are talking and both sides seem open to getting something done.

Taylor Hall/Devils extension talks:

Dreger says agent met w/ Shero this weekend. "It sounds like they're making some traction here...he (Hall) loved the way he was treated by the Devils organization. Very professional from start to finish....

Bob McKenzie on TSN1050 says that Taylor Hall has given his agent, Darren Ferris, the "green light" to negotiate a new contract with the New Jersey Devils.

I hope that Hall is true to his statements and leaves a few dollars on the table to set the tone for the younger players.

It would be nice but at the same time, I just want him to be re-signed no matter what.

We can argue Dollars and Cents afterward (which would be pretty pointless anyway).

Just get him re-signed so that removes this ENORMOUS Dark-Cloud over our entire offseason.

In fact, him getting re-signed puts the proverbial cherry on top of our sweet offseason. :)

It's great he wants to stay but it would be nice to know if he can get back to MVP form and maybe even play half a season without injury before locking him up long term.

You can't predict injuries, though.

If GMs were afraid of things like this, No player would be getting signed for more than 1 year no matter who it is.

GMs signing players to long-term deals are making an investment.

a leap of faith, if you will, that the player will fulfill that contract.

Personally, I believe that Hall will be fine.

Will he be back to MVP form? I don't know but quite honestly, with the talent we have, I don't think he needs to be this time around. Just be GOOD and we're golden.

I don't know how much negotiating there is to do. Shero can suggest Hall is coming off an injury and that every cent counts in building a contender, but Hall gets pretty close to a blank check no?

On Devils Daily podcast, they had Cangy on and they were discussing whether he thought that Hall’s contract discussions could possibly be a distraction during the season...and Cangy’s first response was something like “I’m not so sure they can’t get it done by Friday.” Definitely an interesting first response. Obviously Cangy isn’t directly involved in management or anything like that, but he’s around the team enough to get a pretty good sense of if there is progress.

That would make sense getting it done before the season starts. If he does sign I bet that one preseason game where Hughes was the center on his line helped sealed the deal.

Hall’s extension is worth more than just what he brings to the table. It’s a message to the league that NJ is a franchise worth playing for. A Hall extension should change the tired old narrative that guys want out of NJ at their first chance.

Imagine If Hall takes less than Panarin for once the NJ fan base can tell the NYR fan base that a player chose NJ and took less than the guy in NY.

A Hall extension will maybe make other players ask Hall why he wanted to stay and shed light on the player supportive atmosphere Shero and ownership are developing.

I think any hopes of him taking a team friendly deal gets knocked down a bit with Hall giving the "green light" to his agent. If Shero was able to sit down with Hall and lay out a plan that included the rest of the team, and Hall really was all about being on a winning team, Hall could possibly be convinced to take a Tampa like contract. But I can't imagine his agent will be looking at the rest of the team in terms of long term success and leaving money on the table.

Don't get me wrong, I just want him signed and the whole thing over at this point, but I'm a little nervous about the hit.

I don’t think the “green light” automatically means Hall’s camp is ready to take the Devils to the cleaners. If Hall is being truthful, and so far I believe he has been, his #1 priority is winning, #2 is money. I’m sure he is aware of how his contract will affect the future of the organization/directly affecting him as well. He’s going to get paid regardless, so hopefully he sees the value in a reasonable deal from both sides: he gets paid his worth and the Devils don’t handcuffs themselves from retaining guys like Hischier and Hughes long term.

In the end the agent works for the player, not the other way around. If Hall wants every last penny the agent will try to get it. If not, the negotiation should be easier.

At this point you kind of have to trust that Shero will make the right move with the money allocated. I don’t think he’d sign Hall at the cost of nico or jack, so I’m not very worried about that. Toronto was able to sign all of their dudes who are poised to still be way more expensive than what we have over here for now. It’ll be fine.

It doesn’t mean he is willing to take a massive team friendly deal either. It’s naive to believe he is going to take anything less then $10 million per.

This is going to be expensive. Shero most likely already knows this though.

You’re right. Like I said, he’s going to get paid his worth, but there’s still a difference between him taking 10 or 10.5 aav vs demanding 11+.

i bet the question is term. if he does 7 years, he can sign with another team at age 34, and the 35+ rule doesn't apply to his new contract

if he does an 8 yr deal, his next contract might be harder to get
