Nino Niederriter and Ryan Strome would be the poster boys here. Bailey, Mayfield, Pulock and Beauvellier have had their careers transformed after Capuano was finally let go. One wonders if Barzal could have thrived as he has if Capuano was still around he easily could have ended up as Strome or Okposo if Capuano was still there to foster mediocrity.

Mayfield and Pulock spent most of their time in the AHL developing while Capuano was coaching the Islanders...also this year Beauvellier scored 8 less points in 10 MORE games than last year. Some transformation

Not sure why they did this.
Meth and Wally had a good segment really breaking down how this is never a win move, even if you're trying to retain a solid consistent coaching environment for your early rebuild.

Now, will the Manns be looking at this and wondering if they really want to be with an organization that places a ceiling on them?

Assuming the Sens’ appreciate Mann’s ability to develop young players and that Mann would aspire to become a coach in the NHL. It might be the case that they need Mann to work his magic with the rookies in Belleville this year and are dangling Capuano’s spot as assistant coach next year when his contract runs out.

I read somewhere this Mann's contract expires THIS year, end of June actually.

Its within their rights but it looks bad. It would probably leave more bad taste in the mouths of the coaches.. DJ I expect would support Cap.. and Cap is going to be pissed at being blocked from an opportunity to advance and get another HC gig. This kind of negativity should be avoided in the room and around the team of young players. The worst that can happen is they lose Cap and have to hire another assistant.

It comes at bad timing as well.. with Mann looking for a new contract and a pathway into the NHL. They probably want Mann in Belleville and would need to skate around an opening in Ottawa if Cap left.

Pretty much this, let him go promote Mann but not as HC ask him if he want to be AGM ,his other brother can be GM and PD can be Pres

It's crazy that casual fans can see this so clearly, yet guys paid millions can botch only the worst way possible. Do these people just lack complete insight outside of evauating dollars and hockey talent/rebuilding plans?

The post you’re replying to doesn’t really make any sense. Why would Trent Mann because AGM? Makes no sense at all

Bush league. I’m not someone that craps on the org too much but this is indefensible.

Ya right he signed a short contract he can honor it. Imagine freaking out because Buffalo wants Brady to be their winger but we won't let him just pack up and leave? He does not have the right to just leave.

I mean if Brady was playing 4th line minutes in Ottawa, but Buffalo was offering him 1st line minutes, and Brady wanted to go there and have the best opportunity possible, but the organization held him back, it would be reasonable to be angry.

Although comparing an assistant coach leaving to a star player is a little silly.

Definitely a bad look for the sens

Yes, because going from assistant coach in the $100-300k range to being a head coach in the $1.5-5 mil range, where there are only 32 jobs in the entire planet in this league, is totally the same as a winger in the league.

False equivalence. Common practice in the league is that you don’t block a person from a chance to move up. The Leafs paid Keene as an NHL coach in the AHL to keep him. Stopping an associate coach from getting a chance to be a head coach is bush league. There is no defending this move.

Well he should not have signed with the sens then. Dorion needs to keep good personnel he is in direct competition with Buffalo. This is not the first guy to be blocked and it won't be the last.

Because they planned on promoting him, which they did.

If we were planning on promoting Cap to head coach, it would be perfectly fine.

Cap is not happy, and that for a reason. Head coach isn’t in the plans for him here, unless it’s a 4 month interim job.

Because they had him succession planned to take over. Are you saying we're planning on promoting Capuano?

There are circumstances when it makes sense and is justifiable to block an interview, and there are times where it's shortsighted and causes far more trouble than it's worth.

How do you know the plan was not to promote him?

Hey, if the plan is to promote him, it's all good, might want to communicate that to Capuano, might change his reported feelings over the move. DJ might have some reservations about that plan though.

It would also be a really weird plan to hire a rookie HC to start the job and groom the experienced guy to take over...

Doesn’t mean it’s not bush league. If they were that set on Cap staying they should offer him a raise and extension. It’s more bush league garbage. Having a disgruntled associate coach is probably not the best thing heading into a critical season.
