Assuming that’s the Wood that used to play for North Bay, I liked his upside back then. Big RH shot D.

Yep, it is. He wound up as their playoff scratch. His rookie AHL season was excellent, not sure what happened but he fell off hard in year 2.

Curious how he feels about NYR with Quinn being hired there. Not sure how the depth chart looks for New York, but that's another option for him as well. He probably knew he wasn't going to re-sign in AZ, so he might've looked at destinations. Buffalo may have been one of those options, along with a few others. I hope he signs here as Depth on the blueline in this organization is important.

That's a good point about NYR. I imagine what direction they (NYR) go will have an impact. They said they were doing a rebuild but are getting a ton of pushback from Lundquist on that. So who knows what direction they take this summer.

This could be a pretty decent trade if Hickey signs. Turning an over-abundance of waiver eligible RW prospects into defensive depth is something that makes a lot of sense.

This trade is obviously about the numbers game with all 3 of Fasching, Bailey and Baptiste (who are all RW's) no longer being waiver exempt.
Fasching was the odd man out in that group.

But I also think this trade is, in part, about giving Fasching a shot elsewhere. He's a great kid and seems to be thought of highly by everyone who meets him.
Arizona's RW depth is pretty poor. The Coyotes need bottom 6 RW's. I think Fasching actually stands a good chance at getting a good look in the NHL in Arizona.

Main board is speculating that it's because of the coaching change in Arizona...the Tocchet system requires a lot more speed and Wood hardly got any PP time last season which is where he excelled the year before. I look forward to seeing what he can do in San Jose, wish it was us that sniped him. He's apparently still growing and is now around 6'7"

Yep, and I'm on the same side of this move as well. It's just going to be fun watching people defend the move because back then people took issue with Murray making this type of move. People love to crap on Tim, and we have a GM that pretty much does the same move. But because Botts did this move, it's going to painted in a positive light, whereas Murray would get criticized.

I misinterpreted your original post. I assumed you were against the Fasching/Hickey move. My mistake.

I would have happily taken him in the deal as well. SJS might have something there...they seem to be able to develop that kind of player.

Meanwhile, Brayden McNabb just unlaced his skates from playing June hockey.
McNabb would be a borderline AHL
wreck would he have stayed with the Sabres.
Wasn't good enough for the Kings.
Has played awful in the final.
Let's see how he does next year.
Except the draft picks there is not much lost in this trade.
Its not like he is an established top 4 guy.

McNabb now after having had years of working with the Kings staff who have had some success bringing out qualities in their defense vs. Buffalo who weren't nearly a successful in that same time likely is not even the player people are trying to throw under a casino shuttle in this thread. I have doubts that he'd be the player we see in Vegas if he'd stayed in Buffalo.

As I said previously, odd a fan of the team is looking forward to us not signing players. For the "comedy" aspect of it doesn't seem like much of a rationale

I mean obviously he is not saying that “as a fan of this team”.

He is saying it as an observer of this little universe of fans on a message board.

Distinct difference.

Could I also buy a crystal ball like you have?

Wasn’t good enough for the Kings, though he played two full seasons plus part of another. Makes sense.

The VGK had a roster full of players that weren’t good enough.

Fasching seemed like a great kid and I was really hoping it would work out, but he clearly didn't take the next step he needed to last season. I hope he puts it together with Arizona and becomes a productive NHL'er.
Yep. Really was hoping he made it.

The Sabres have a long history of providing 3rd and 4th liners to the rest of the league. I think Fasching will have an NHL career eventually. Sad to see him go, because of his back story with his two siblings being profoundly mentally/physically disabled.
We really should all just start mentally preparing for this to go full circle - Fasching to be selected by Seattle in the expansion draft in a couple years and being a regular in a deep playoff run Seattle's first season.

Is this right? I don't trust Paul Hamilton. At all.

Players cannot be signed to contracts that don't cover the current league year unless 1) the player is under contract and signing an extension or 2) the player is signing their first NHL contract and it's between March 1 and June 1. However, all indications are that a player cannot sign a contract for a league year in which his team has no games remaining (that is, no player can sign a contract now that covers the 2017-18 league year), so no new SPCs can be signed between June 1 and July 1.
Now, one might point to Luukkonen's having signed, but presumably that contract was either signed by June 1 and not announced until yesterday, or won't be processed until July 1.
