Well he is a first round pick that was MVP at the World Juniors. Guess it all depends on what your idea of “blue chip” is, buts thats going to get people excited.

I don’t follow here too close but were guys calling him a sure fire #1 C? Would think top line player / first pair projections would be blue chip.

The deflection goal scorer part still breaks me up. Yeah, use 1st round picks on guys who score off deflections as their main goal scoring arsenal.

Many here fall into a trap of underrating players based on their NCAA stats when they're the youngest on their team playing against fully grown men. Poehling was MVP in the WJC and was a late-1st (25th)...an area of the draft where there are certainly no sure things. Many hockey outlets did however view him as a steal.

It appears that Habs coaching staff isn't happy with his work ethic. He did get invited to be part of the bubble roster but didn't do enough to make it into our lineup despite our lack of forward depth after punting the ball at the trade deadline. I hope he learned a few things after being marooned for a month with passionate pros like Weber, Gallagher and Price.

One guy called him the best center prospect not in the NHL.

And he got voted our 1 prospect. I dont see how you could vote for him in that spot without some belief of that upside.

Well then ya, I agree with that. I was thinking solid 2 way 2/3 C. Never saw much more then that.

He doesn't have the shot to score 20-25 either.

He was, he admitted to doing nothing after the pause

I see Poehling as a potential Tom Wilson winger, without the pugilistic abilities.

Look at Tom Wilson's stats. He was drafted in 2012. It was only in 2017-2018, i.e. in his draft +6 season that he emerged as a pretty good player, putting a then career high 35 points. We can see from the way Poehling plays, it will take him time to improve.

Ryan Poehling doesn't play anywhere near Tom Wilson playstyle. He would need to change his playstyle completely to be a Wilson type winger.

I don't see how anyone can look at Poehling play and see a power forward. He's closer to a bigger Plekanec than to Tom Wilson.

I did not like the pick not just due to pint production, but because offensive upside seemed limited and the deflection specialty was the cherry on top. By D+1 though he really took off and for sure I was thinking my doubts looked out of place, and maybe he had 2C upside.

I was expecting better from him this year, I dont mean a great year, just better. It was just his first year so no panic, though he seems a bit of a pouty guy, and I expected a guy who would dig down and pull himself forward. The " I chilled" during the break , if true, needs to be addressed asap. Might be asking too much, but he had a shot at playing wing instead of Weise.

We can revisit our differing perspectives on what Poehling will be at the NHL level over the next couple of years...

we have had so many sure fire #1C in the past 20 years.....lol

a few years ago Poehling, I mean 4 goals in one game must mean #1C right?....lol

then the next year was KK, now its Suzuki,

they all fizzle out sooner or later,

its okay to dream though,

we are still in search of a true #1C, nobody on the roster will become one

NEVER thought he’d be a 1C I’m not sure where that rating of him started. He was always donated to a 2 way Jordan Staal type for his ceiling and has showed that potential. He obviously has some life issues at the moment based on his comments as well as rumours of video game addiction (and disappointing political views) etc... hope he matures a bit a figures it out. Too soon to give up on him.

Many said Price, McDonagh, Subban, and Pacioretty wouldn't be all that good when they were coming up...

True. But then he was yo-yo'd between the NHL and AHL, and somehow was allowed to languish for 3 months doing f*** all and now here we are. Eille, it's on da playeur!
I’m not sure your point is backing up your view point. If a player is obviously struggling and sent down to the AHL decides to spend the next 3 months playing Fortnite then the chances of him ever amounting to anything were never all that high.
Having the commitment to be a pro is hard work, some have it, most don’t.

Suzuki and Kotkaniemi seem to have no problem with responsibility in their development but not everyone matures at the same rate but if its true that Poehling wasn't in game shape going into camp I don't see how you can blame the org for that.
Apparently we can’t expect our prospects to know being in shape is part of their responsibility.

What’s wrong with some of you?
This was his first pro year, a concussion early on, being bounced around, ending last year on high expectation.

Let him settle for a couple years at least in the AHL and possibly 3rd line in two years..

jesus. He’s got so much heart for the game, has unpolished offensive skills..

he’s a project, it will take him a few years..

he wasn’t drafted in the top 10..
He’s a bum.

It would indeed. However, Plekanec had 66 pts in 74 AHL games in his D+3 year. Poehling actually need to put his man pants up and work hard this summer to prove he's not just good against kids.

Right now, the first prospect arguably doing worse than him in the 2017 draft is #35 Isaac Ratcliffe.

I still think he can make it and be a middle 6 forward, but he needs to start putting real effort into it.

Right now, I'm getting shades of Leblanc's lack of hockey willpower. Except right now we have the best AHL coach possible to rescue a guy like him (contrary to Sly who was the worst possible guy for that job), so all is not lost.

Really hoping he can end up being a good third line Center. If Danault and Domi don’t want to stick around then we will need to fill that spot

There is no shame at being a very strong third line center that can shut down the opposition while producing some decent offense... I expect him to become a better Danault
So, he's going to be better than Danault, but that still makes him a 3rd line center?

I swear, people have their way with definitions on this board.

Or people still haven't learned from Desharnais, that if you give one player premium ice time with your best players - someone has to score and their offensive numbers are inflated because of that.

If it looks like a duck, flies like a duck, swimms like a duck then it's probably a duck.
