Not really. Many 21 year old players get passed over for veterans in the playoffs throughout the league.

That's not how things work.

Just because the headaches are gone doesn't mean he doesn't have other long term side effects, or permanent changes to their brain and central nervous system.

Side effects can range from physical to psychological though, as DA said, you can have severe depression that wouldnt exactly prevent you from playing, memory loss, lack of motivation, etc.

Certainly would explain the wtf moment where he didnt train once in four months.

If that was the case, I would hope that the player would be honest with the team and medical staff because there are treatments for depression.

That being said, we know his personal background and he might not be forthcoming with depression since there are sub-sets of the population who don't think depression is a real thing, or that it would not be 'manly' to admit that you have it.

Either way, kid needs to mature.

It's not that simple. The brain is very poorly understood and psychiatrists and other top medical professionals will say that most treatments are guess and check and often not very effective.

I don't know why he didn't play and I can't speak to his physical condition because I wasn't with the team during the playoffs. The team needed to make decisions, Evans and Belzile did well too. We did follow up with our players during the pandemic, including Ryan, we gave them everything we could.

Ryan is 21 and is still learning. You're making a bigger story out of this than it is for me. Ask Danault if he had some tough .moments early in his career. Professional hockey is a challenge, Ryan isn't different, he's learning new things, a higher caliber of play, and a completely different style of play than in the NCAA.

Every player is different and it's a mistake to compare players. You have to compare them to their own development path, such as where they were a year ago. Every player has different baggage, skills, and personalities. The guys go from one league to the next where they're playing fewer games in a league with more games, against men. It's a big challenge and they all hit a wall in their first year, some deal with it better than others. There's nothing abnormal about experiencing adversity in year 1. He also had some good moments. He got to be in the NHL with the Gallaghers and Danault's of the world. He had good moments with us. He was laying his best hockey right before the injury.

I don't care about what position he'll play. He's played center and a few games as a winger. My job is to develop players in harmony with organizational needs. The beauty of the AHL is that it's a laboratory, we can place players out of their comfort zone, to increase their breadth of skill. It happens a lot and Ryan had a good attitude about being placed on the wing.
