It's a joke that they get the All-Star game again and pretty much every event in 2017. Who cares if it's their 100th season. It's also the NHL's 100th season.

Where would the NHL have these events then? Seeing as its the league it can't really choose a city, except maybe MTL where it was founded (but they just had all the events in 09).

Leafs are a model franchise who are worth the most, have the second most history and championships and are the leagues most popular team. MTL got the star treatment in 2009.

What do you mean again? They haven't had it since 2000.

sorry but the problem is that no one except leafs fans care about toronto playing in the winter classic
with the habs vs bruins you have a nice rivalry even non fans would watch
who is toronto gonna play against to make it worth watching?

That's funny, the Leafs vs Wings WC had the most viewers of any WC...

try harder.

There's arguably only one team more important in the NHL than the Leafs, and that's the Habs.

Well that's cool....but here's my question...

The Winter classic was created by NBC...an American TV network....to get mainstream American sports fans to watch hockey on a day that is not dominated by other pro sports.

Do you honestly think that NBC is going to want the Winter Classic to feature two Canadian teams playing on Canadian soil on their network?

While it is true that the Overnight Ratings for the Leafs-Wings game was tied for the highest ratings for a Winter Classic in US history...guess who they were tied with? Just to let you know..one of the teams was the Wings. Total viewership, Capitals-Pens!

Btw...the event will be held on January 2nd.....just like the 2012 winter classic.....because the NFL is more important to US networks than Hockey.

I can just imagine The NBC story lines now....last year you got to watch the most successful franchise in the history of hockey play the Bruins.....this year they play the most valuable...on their 100th Aniversary of their Franchise....and the 50th Aniversary of the last time they played in a Stanley Cup Final...

Oh really? The NHL didn't have a problem putting the winter classic between the Leafs and Wings on January 1st in 2014... guess hockey was as important to US networks then. The Habs and Leafs have numerous fans in the US as well, there's a reason why they're top draws on the road even when they aren't good (Blackhawks have a high road attendence only after their recent success).

Oh really...yes genius...here on earth we have a thing called a calendar? There was no NFL game during the Leafs-Wings....So there was nothing to move. January 1 2017 is on a Sunday and January 1 2014 was a Wednesday. Once again...it's not about what the NHL has a problem doing! It's about NBC...the creator of the winter classic...a U.S. TV network.

From Wiki

"The game returned to its original daytime time slot, with the Rangers-Flyers game beginning at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (two hours behind its originally scheduled start time of 1:00 p.m.).[1] This marked the first time the Winter Classic was not played on New Year's Day, as it fell on a Sunday; NBC's contract with the National Football League prevents them from airing NHL games (or anything else) on prime time Sunday night, because of NBC Sunday Night Football,[3] and while NBC has an open time slot on Sunday afternoon, the NFL traditionally discourages its broadcast partners from programming high-profile sports events in competition with its own games, a full slate of which the NFL played on the afternoon of Sunday, January 1."

I guess if they're expecting 'big things' then they must have an inside track on Stamkos coming home (a couple of my college friends are close buddies with him and are certain he's coming to Toronto, I'm not convinced). If not, then it'll likely be a year of events where the Maple Leafs miss the playoffs yet again..
