No thanks to Gagner.. Chia should look for another hidden gem like Rattie, Marody,Maroon,Kassian of 4 yrs ago.
Kassian for Petan would be great.

Beggars can't be choosers. If theres a low-risk way to give Gags a shot I'd do it. He'd be one of our best wingers in terms of puck skills. Kassian is getting buried either way, it seems, so why not? I bet he'd be better than Camalleri and he seemed to fit in here alright. If you're shopping the bargain bin looking for gold you've gotta get creative and I think this could work - but I'd only do it if they absorb close to the difference in cap. 700k at least.

I'd be happy with Petan too, LTIR, but will Kassian return that? He probably has pretty low value.

Just looking at teams near the bottom of the standings. LA has been very bad. Does Jeff Carter have a couple good years left in him? 5.2 mil cap hit. Strome, Kassian, and a pick would be about equal salary. The pick might need to be a 1st, but i'd do a 2nd in a heartbeat.

Other bottom feeder targets would be Athanisiou or Mantha from Detroit. Would probably have to dangle Puljujarvi for Mantha. Maybe Kassian and a late round pick to Florida for Petrovic makes sense.

If we are looking at moving Jesse (I hope that we aren't) maybe something around Jesse + for Toffoli?

Gregor and Struds made a good point regarding Gagner. They said he’s a 4th line player that needs to be sheltered but is a PP specialist. They said if a team can put him in the right role he has a use. They said Clb did this and Gagner had success.

But everywhere else he struggled because he can’t handle a bigger role.

So if the Oilers can utilize him properly sure I can see some use in him but for any of you that think he can play on the 2nd line or even 3rd or much more the truth is Gags can’t.

He’d be a pure specialist. I don’t know if we need that type of player right now to be honest but if our PP starts to struggle then I might consider it. He could also probably be an option in the shootout as well.

We'd need to add some salary, but a Drai/Toffoli duo on the 2nd line looks good. If LA really wants to rebuild and was willing to take Sekera we could swing a blockbuster, although unlikely being in the same division.

Strome, Sekera, Puljujarvi, 1st for Toffoli, Carter, 3rd

RNH McDavid Rattie
Reider Drai Toffoli
Lucic Carter Yams
Khaira Brodziak Chiasson

If Vancouver doesn't want Gagner, we shouldn't want Gagner.
Vancouver doesn't want Gagner because they're in a youth movement. Giving ice-time to depth forwards doesn't benefit them in any way. That ice time is better suited for a player they can develop or turn into a valuable asset at the trade deadline.

We are looking for one thing--depth scoring. And we are trading with one thing--Zack Kassian.

If we waive Zack Kassian he still adds $900k to the cap for us if he's buried. That's not including the cap hit of the guy we need to replace him. So you're looking at a cap hit of at least $1.6m just to ice a rookie in Kassian's place--closer to Kassian's original salary if you're keeping Marody for that role. For the additional $1.1m, I'd prefer a shot at a proven point producer who could help our PP instead of just icing rookies.

Regardless, I'm not gonna continue defending this move. I'm calling it.

I would do Kassian for Petan, but Winnipeg wouldn't because of Kassian's second year on his deal.

His second year is the reason we're probably looking at a player coming back who also has a second year on their deal. It's pretty unlikely a team let's us off the hook for his deal.

Cannot fathom what anybody sees in Kassian to not want him gone. If you watch the game of hockey with the black rubber disk these guys pass and shoot around, you realize he is a nothing player.

I'm shocked there is a pro Gagner group period let alone one willing to bring him back to Edmonton.

Gagner is slow.

Gagner is terrible in his zone.

Gagner is terrible in the neutral zone.

While his talent/skill in the ozone is undeniable it is also very streaky. He disappears for long periods of time even offensively.

You can only shelter a player like Gagner so much. His offense is never worth his net loss to the team. His one good year on the blue jackets is the exception not the rule.

A big no to that kind of player period imo.

Maybe the Rangers are getting close to being done with the Jimmy Vesey experiment?

He's got a hell of shot, but that's basically it.

Makes about $300k more than Kassian. Same term.

I wonder if a Kassian+Benning package is enough to bring back a D man who can be trusted on the bottom pair and slide up to the second pair in a pinch. No idea who that player is lol.

Kulikov and Petan...mentioned it on the last page. Winnipeg would probably do it, too. I doubt Todd lets go of Benning though.

That's what I was kind of thinking. Trade them as a package for either a better D+worse winger or vice versa.

Something like Kassian+Benning for Petrovic+Sceviour.

Doubt we can add a single dollar to our cap. No go unless Jets retain some salary for Kulikov

I'm not surprised that some would want Gagner back, aside from being likeable and a good team guy, he does clearly bring skill and has use as a PP specialist. Our 2nd unit PP is quite frankly garbage and it does seem to suffer from a shortage of skill, Gagner seems like he could help out there.

In a 4th line role I'm not entirely sure a Khaira-Brodziak-Gagner line would be a net positive and obviously he can't take Kassian's PK mins and makes us softer and easier to play against in general. In a straight swap I'd lean into hard no, with significant retention on Gagner I'd atleast entertain the thought.

Sprong is looking a little bust-ish, but could be a good buy-low candidate. I could see the Pens appreciating Kassian enough. I mean, Reaves and such.

Sprong for Kass?
