As much as it gets harped on with JvR that’s really not bad outcome at all even if it didn’t end up the most ideal. He was still a top line winger for a good chunk of his career (top six at worst). The Flyers just traded him away during his peak years for a bottom pairing defender. The guy in front of him went on to become a HoF caliber player & scored the GWG against them in the finals. So the optics aren’t great but it underscores the actual math/percentages to these things.

It was also one isolated top pick. Usually bad teams have multiple kicks at the can with accumulating high picks. That’s what really mitigates the outcomes. Say the Flyers were one of the worst teams again in 2008 well then you’re walking away with Stamkos or Doughty possibly.

Toronto is another team where they really hit it out of the park with outcomes when they got Nylander (#8), Marner (#4), & Matthews (#1) with consecutive top picks. That’s two stars & a top line caliber players. Now that’s a pretty great outcome with that chances probably are unlikely in most cases to get those three outcomes but still they were playing the lottery on multiple occasions & not just a one & done.

Ed Snider just absolutely refused to rebuild... really didn't help this club.

You really need to bottom out and let the lotto balls fall with you and against you. I really don't see how the Flyers are going to be gamers in the next few years.

To be fair they actually pulled off a successful on the fly rebuild back then. They obviously had Richards, Carter, & Gagne at the pro level. Giroux & JvR were some of the best drafted prospects in the league at that time. They did bring in a surplus of talent with like Briere, Timonen, Hartnell, Coburn, Lupul, etc. for what they traded out. But they had more assets & cap to play with. The CBA was different too.

One more win and the Flyers would have been picking 2nd.

Well we know one thing for certain which we can't trust what comes out of this brain trust (Homer/Clarke/etc.) so we might never know what caused them to make those picks. They couldn't of found a better draft to have 2 lotto tickets though. 2003 was stacked in the first round. Like STACKED.

Seems like they just happened to strike gold by not having Richards/Carter break out before nabbing Giroux and lucking out with JVR.

Came crashing down to a holt when trading for Bryzgalov though.

I’m really not a fan of this weird revisionism of the 06-07 season where the Flyers were in last place, 11 points behind the next worst team.

Did they dump a boatload of prime assets in an attempt to compete that season?

This is clearly the worst season in franchise history when you consider the organizations expectations vs. reality. Even Charlie agrees with that.

Adding 3 years to Couturier’s age is very Jtown.

No its called looking into the future when Cooley and Geekie are for-sure NHLers. Its not that serious. You take shit more literal than Drax the Destroyer sometimes lol

Well he is a difference maker. He has a massive negative impact, which definitely makes a difference.

And all it cost us was the 13th overall, the 36th overall, and a top pair D. No big deal.

Even if you want to consider Ghost a bottom pair, you've essentially swapped out a bottom pair for a "middle pair" at best but with another 5 years attached to it. This is a league in which you should only be paying your top end players and not middle tier players.

The Devils are an outright scary team if you consider the cap space they have available and the ability to add Luke Hughes and the #2 OA pick to their roster.

Anyone who thinks Ristolainen is a better defensemen than Ghost needs to be banned from watching the sport.

Just give them a coloring book and make sure they don't eat glue.

Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, 2nd overall, Holtz, L. Hughes...thats a damn good young core to build upon.

The Flyers wouldn’t have necessarily picked 2nd if they won another game and finished 5th. They more than likely would not. That’s not how real world mathematics works, in a dynamic system, with an abundance of microscopic variables. Don’t concern yourself with that stuff.

Sorry-ass debs are like the new Oilers.
Eventually they'll top-5 pick their way into the playoffs despite themselves. The fact that they're picking over Seattle makes me want to puke.
