This would be a nice contract on a contender, but does MTL really need cap space for the 2 years that theyll most likely be a non-playoff team. The owners have clearly given the signal for a rebuild.

I think it'll hurt them in the long run instead for not signing a long term deal.

If they are rebuilding I dont think its about the cap space as much as the 4 years rfa status compared to 2 years ufa.

But why not get some significant picks and actual prospects rather than a bandaid player?

I would have wanted picks also but considering the consensus has been that galchenyuk wasn't worth a top 10 pick. Habs have a much better chance with Domi then a late 1st and a 2nd/3rd rounders.

that's a lot of money. they must be really really confident they can bring out the best in him otherwise he's just a really highly paid shit disturber.

It's a fair contract. Bergevin did not get a discount though. Signed through rfa years, so he wouldn't have to pay a premium for any ufa years. Domi's agent could probably have tried to use arvidsson as a comp less ufa years. Anyone that says the contract is low, it isn't. Anyone saying the contract is high, it isn't. This is one of those rare occasions where (perceived) player value, team value, and league value for a contract are as close to matched up as can be. I don't think that Montreal really needs another smallish skilled playmaking winger, but at least he isn't overpaid based on 'potential'

math isn't really my forte but...he had one year barely over 50 points and the other two not so I don't think that's how averages work. you guys will just blindly slather love over everything anyway so not that it matters. I guess the hope is he'll make other people score goals, then?

He avergaged .61 points per game in his career, which is a 50 point average.

Bad trade, contract isn’t long enough to make it a steal or a burden.
Bridge contract pushes him to produce. Also why sign him to X years when you can sign him to a 2 year bridge THEN sign him to X years. It extends the amount of time you have him under your control.

I like the contract, still terrible trade by the Habs. Surprised Galy was not openly offered, I'm sure the Habs could have gained a larger return.

as long as MTL fans are happy I guess it was a good trade and/or signing. Honestly really like the change of scenery trades.

Interesting. MTL has 19M cap space with the cap going to 80M. Danault + DLR will get at most 4M total so 15M.

If Pacioretty goes the other way, MTL could very possibly afford both ROR + Tavares...
