kane has just finished the fifth year of his 8 year contract and so far is better than ppg. his doing fine.
point plays the more valuable position. he is the 1c of one of the best teams in the nhl. tampa moved their captain stamkos to the wing because of him and he is paid more than 4 million less than marner. toronto's salary structure is actually the main issue.
Marner's contract isn't great, but it's no retirement contract, either. It’s got to be someone with as bad a contract as Marner, obviously.
Erik Karlsson.
Leon Draisaitl's cap hit is 8.5mill, so that's an additional 2.4mill. 2.4mill is the difference between paying an average 3-3.5mill player & a 5.5-5.9mill good/star level player. Nothing to scoff at.
His contract isn't great, but when you consider:
a) His actually salary remaining is only about 7 million per season, which makes him attractive to owners
b) He'd be the best forward traded straight up for a defenseman since Brendan Shanahan a quarter century ago
c) The cost of RD on hf is about 2x more than in real life.
There would be plenty of suitors if Dubas were to shop him, but I doubt he does.
Taylor Hall was traded for Adam Larsson.b) He'd be the best forward traded straight up for a defenseman since Brendan Shanahan a quarter century ago

Clearly you never heard of inflation....Scott Gomez held a higher cap hit percentage then Marner. When was the last time a player with a $7m+ cap hit was traded? (Weber/Subban aside) At $10+ million, he's not movable, it's just too big of a hit.
Doughty is closer to retirement then Marner is entering his prime....But have nobody close to taking on what Doughty brings to the Kings. I would never trade a #1 defenseman for a winger.

We all get that Marner is an awesome pt producer but where the problems lies is the playoffs. In his last 2 years marner has 161pts in 141 games. He has had a high ankle sprain and a minor shoulder injury in 4 years
marner has 1.14ppg in his last 2 years
taylor hall was coming off 38 pts in 52 games and a 60 pt season and had multiple injuries almost every year.
taylor hall was no where near where marner is at the time of the trade.
wow what a terrible offer. I wouldn't take Subban for free at this point.Go to NJ
Subban + Severson + ???
Marner + Holl + Dermott
cap is pretty much the same here.
Marner holds far more value than the 8th overall pick and when you factor in taking on a cap dump like Skinner, its not even close.Marner's cap hit is a problem in and of itself. He's a really good young player, but is getting paid like a Superstar who has won multiple Cups (i.e. Kane). Most teams do not want to, or can't, deal with that.
Trade for Skinner and the #8. Salaries are close. Pick Sanderson or Drysdale with the #8.
LOL. Blues say maybe if Leafs retain 50%Marner for Alexander Steen & Parayko
Subban is horrible. He is too busy posting on IG and Tik Tok
If teams are cash strapped, they may look to add salary to deals if they are worth while to the Leafs.
Marner as RW #1 and Caufield as RW #2 looks really nice.
Why not for Echiel? "...

Paying your best players is never a problem.
When Marner challenges for an Art Ross there is going to be a lot of bad takes around here.
He's the Leafs top point producer in the playoffs. We all get that Marner is an awesome pt producer but where the problems lies is the playoffs.
Till he brings that same play come playoff time his value diminishes and than you have to add on that contract.
If your going to pay out big contracts you want the player to be able to step up come playoffs.
