Jake is a good defensemen. But Lou decided this when he signed Marleau to a term that overlapped our re-signing of Matty and Marner. This decision was made for Kyle by Lou (and Mike).

Our LHD depth is pretty nuts - Rielly/Gards/Dermott is very strong in the NHL, then Rosen and Borgman are both pretty NHL ready, and Sandin doesn’t look far off either.

If we can move Gards (+more?) for an RHD soon, it’d be a smart move. It simply won’t make sense to give him a big money extension when we’re so deep at LHD, so IMO it’s either deal him or lose him for nothing.

What happened to Borgman. He looked like an NHLer for 40 games last year...then got sent down.

Did Lou sign JT?

Stop blaming our former GM we had a ton of cap space when he departed.

Everyone knows what Gardiner is. You don't have to try and sell him.

He can move the puck, as long as someone gets him the puck, Leafs need defender who can get the puck away from the opposition, and restrict the free movement in their own zone. That isn't Gardiner.

Are you suggesting Z isn't very good?

Can you really see the leafs signing a 30 year old 2nd line defenseman to a 6 year 6+ million dollar contract during crunch time? Beacause that's what Gardiner will want.
No, I don't think they'll resign Gardiner. I do, however, believe they will move out some players to clear some cap in the offseason to accommodate whatever defenceman they pick up before the deadline this year. Dubas is too smart to go into the playoffs this year with the current corps.

Dice, you may even know more about hockey than me. But you just gotta read... Marleau was always a stupid idea. A diminishing overpaid asset. JT is anything but that. I guess you side with Lou, and would have advised Kyle not to go after JT because we got Marleau at 6M+!!!! Round 1 exit!!!

Marleau was not a stupid idea. Without Marleau you don’t have John Tavares.

There’s another thread floating around with that interview of McCown’s with Babcock. Where he says: “Once you make it safe, they’ll come.”

Marleau is part of that process. You have to show others that this place can work. And fans for the most part were happy to have Marleau on board for the first season.

This year is a bit different but it already helped secure JT.

Marleau signing here was a huge success.

It was a major cog in the Shanaplan.

He was never that good. He did ok but was never able to get better. Dermott basically stole his spot.
Funny thing is, Borgman did beat out Rosen for the gig. Obviously, the pecking order has changed now, but Rosen has had two underwhelming camps to date. Looking good in the AHL, does he have the defensive game to stick here.

That will solicit laughter from their end.
The obvious comparable is the McDonagh trade.

McDonagh + Miller

For

Namestnikov Hajek Howden 1st + 2nd

So cancel out Miller for Namestnikov + Hajek(small add)

Howden + 1st + 2nd for McDonagh.

LOL. The Shanaplan was NOT to pay aging players a premium to come here. Pretty much the antithesis. But, rather, to be patient and draft well and build from the ground up. The fanbase was on board.

No way JT grew up sleeping in his Leaf pyjamas dreaming about Patrick Marleau. His die was cast long before that overreach. JT doesn't feel "safe" because of Marleau!! LOL. Really kind of insulting.
Why didn't MLSE have Marleau flipping pucks around in an empty arena instead of Marner???? Would have been way more "safe".......

I though Rosen was easily the best Marlies defenseman in that run last year. Was hoping he’d force his way in early, but he’s there next year. Good re-up!

Leafs wanted a group of vets who weren't has beens rocking the fourth line. Marleau, Hainsey and now JT are part of that vet core. In the future you'll see the reverse Marleau type UFAs taking discounts just to be part of the team (which is what happened in Detroit and Colorado).
