Leighton and Wandell cleared Waivers. Sestito awarded to Van from Phil.

Sestito was claimed by the Canucks per Ryan Rishaug.

Shockingly, Leighton cleared.

I am kind of happy Sestito got claimed. Now the Flyers have a contract to give. Good for the college free agent market.

What does cleared mean? Cleared to play?

cleared as in no one claimed him. however, this also means Leighton is ready to play since you can't demote an injured player

Not happy about losing Sestito, especially for nothing. He was much more effective than Knuble and Wellwood

The Flyers have the option to keep him on the roster or to demote him to the AHL. They have to make the decision within ten days.

The Flyers feared losing Tom Sestito when placing him on waivers Thursday.

Yet, for whatever reason, they felt it was a risk worth taking.

It did not pay off. Vancouver claimed Sestito off waivers on Friday, seemingly to replace a similar player in Aaron Volpatti, who was claimed from them Thursday by Washington.

Goaltender Michael Leighton, who was also on waivers, went unclaimed.

One benefit for the Flyers is that they gain contract flexibility by dropping Sestito's deal, but they felt he was a player who could help them down the line.

Sestito, 25, netted 2 goals in 7 games, and dazzled by scoring both of them in a 2-1 win over Tampa Bay in early February.

Leighton, 31, cleared waivers and the Flyers have the flexibility to freely send him to AHL Adirondack over the next 10 days.

Thank you very much, I just started following hockey last years playoffs, so I wasn't familiar with how waivers worked.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The CBA is very complex and very few can honestly say they know every detail.

---------------------------

Pre-waiver claim today, this is how Bill Meltzer's column had the waiver decision:

Yesterday, the Flyers placed winger Tom Sestito and goaltender Michael Leighton on waivers. The club is currently capped out and is using long-term injured reserve allowance. Sending Sestito ($605,000) and Leighton ($900,000) to Adirondack will clear $1.505 million off the team's cap figure.

There is a chance that Sestito will be claimed off waivers by another team today. Although not particularly trusted by Laviolette (who clearly prefers the smaller, speedier Zac Rinaldo), Sestito does have some assets to offer. He is not a bad skater for such a big guy, and when he plays under control, he can be effective in non-fighting situations.

In the case of Leighton, there is virtually no chance of the veteran goaltender being claimed. It is also pretty clear that fellow veteran Brian Boucher is the better NHL backup. However, in fairness to Leighton, he has only played one pro game since last April. As bad as he looked in his early season outing in Tampa, the team in front of him was just as bad.
