Ask Marleau to retire and give him a front office job with a BS title like Leafs Ambassador to the Pacific West Coast. Pay him a truckload.

Ask Zeitsev very nicely if he will go play in Russia (or maybe he can be TML ambassador to Russia?)

Imo

PM's contract is a No Move and 35+, you can't buy it out, bury it, or Robidas island it.

This is why the contract was so horrible. Lou made a massive mistake giving him the 3rd year.

The Avalanche placed him on waivers a day later, with the intention of buying out the final year of his deal.
Reports at the time suggested a return to Washington — on a new, more team-friendly contract, of course — would not be out of the question for Orpik and the Stanley Cup champions.

Given that Orpik's deal is a 35+ and therefore eligible to also receive Performance Bonuses, his new contract also includes a $500,000 PB.

Making the overall AAV $1.5M

CapFriendly@CapFriendly

Orpik had 1 year remaining on his previous contract which would have paid him $4.5M in 2018-19

Colorado buying out that final season of that contract pays Orpik $1.5M this year, & $1.5M next year

With Orpik's new deal paying him $1M + $500k in PB, means he still comes out even

Orpik, 37, brings physicality and shot-blocking to the Capitals’ blue line, as well as leadership to the locker room. He tallied a team-leading 168 blocked shots in 2017-18, along with 10 assists in 81 regular season games. He also added a goal and four assists during Washington’s run all the way to its first-ever Stanley Cup victory.
“Brooks has been a valuable player and a great mentor for our young players and we are thrilled to bring him back to our organization,” Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said in the team’s press release. “We feel his leadership and competitiveness on and off the ice will be welcomed back to our group.”

Toronto trades Marleau and AJ to Ottawa for a pick and MacArthur. Ottawa buys out Marleau. Leafs LTIR MacArthur. Leafs resign Marleau at league minimum. Why not? It worked fine with caps. NHL was ok with it. Both guys are over 35+.

the reason marleau came here was for the 3rd year because SJ wasn’t willing to commit for three.

We don't need to give up AJ to get rid of Marleau.

If Marleau waives his NMC, his significant drop in salary and high cap hit is valuable to a low cap team.

Marleau has a 3.0 million dollar signing bonus and a 1.25 million salary. 1 year @ 1.25 million for a 20 goal, 45 point vet is great.

To my knowledge we can trade him after paying his signing bonus. I could be wrong, I'll have to fact check it and update my post. Marleau is not only a tradeable player, but an asset @1.25 million.

Florida/Arizona/San Jose could be interested and it's a nice retirement spot for Marleau. Mute point if he doesn't waive though.

Well had we saved the 500k on Nylander and the 2million we overpaid Matthews (based on 5 years) we probably could have fit Jakey boy on the team no problem.

There is the option of equipment allergy.

someone will take Zaitsev, he has shown he is better away from gardiner (and vice versa). We may not get much back for him basically the cap space is the return, especially teams know we have a crunch but someone will take him.
If Zaitsev is moved I think you're going to have to give up a decent asset to get a team to take him. Last two years have been too gnarly for teams to have much interest at that term.

If SJ wanted him at 6.25 they'd have signed him at 6.25 when they had the chance. So unless the Leafs add in someone else he's not going there.

He is untradable, any team that can fit in 6.25 for a 40 point guy he won't waive too. Any team he would waive for can fit him in.

Found this interesting. The way things are being talked about, it appears Gardiner really wants to stay here, and is willing to work on the AAV to make it happen.

It was reported previously that Gardiner was willing to take an AAV that worked for TOR in exchange for term. However that was before Matthews got 11.7, and before Marner was poised to get 10+ as well.

Matthews overpayment will obviously affect Marner's negotiation ... but it will also affect:

- Gardiner's negotiation
- Kapanen's negotiation
- Johnsson's negotiation
- Muzzin's negotiation
- Dermott's negotiation
- Kadri's next contract
- Rielly's next contract
- Andersen's next contract

And it won't be the players causing problems.

No agent wants to be the only guy who can't get their client market value plus .... in the NHL's most most publicized market .... while negotiating with the NHL's most notorious piggy bank .... with none of the teams stars taking discounts to improve optics.

That's bad for business .... and now it's a fact of life.

His number is 51 so he'll probably do 8 years x 5.1 million if he really wants to stay. We'd have to move a lot of stuff around to make it work though.

They do have only one out of this. Fire the GM and claim temporary insanity.

We have one "untouchable" player on this roster (in HF lore), probably time to consider asking them if they have a suitcase that could be delivered to one of 10 teams

Lebrun: Re-signing Jake Gardiner still an option

There is as much chance of Jake resigning with the Leafs as a supermodel leaves their husband/boyfriend and moves in with me.
Gee Lebrun, you had to say something so folks think you're such an insider.

Nylander's point totals would be a lot higher if that untouchable player had actually scored on half of his glorious chances.
Trade Gardiner and Kadri, along with Zaitsev for defense and some toughness up front.

How?

Even with Marner at $9m or so, we'd have to get rid of Zaitsev and Brown AND sign Kappy/Johnsson to very small bridge contracts and it would still be very hard to ice a full roster.

Only way this could work is if the cap went up more than $5M.
