I’ll see it when I believe it. NYI has had some horrible luck with Russians.

Isles can't approach the team with a buyout offer, but it doesn't stop them from wiring money to him and he uses it to pay out his contract.

I do not think that is correct - $ has to come from player NOT team.

Am I wrong?

Sorokin will have one more year left - if he buys out the final year and comes over -

I can see Isles signing him once the season ends to burn an ELC, so Sorokin can be an RFA sooner.

Under those conditions - it is possible to see him coming over

That would be the only situation I can see Sorokin coming over early in. Buy “yourself” out (I have no clue if teams really help foot the bill here) and basically exchange the last year remaining on your KHL contract for getting out of the last year of your NHL contract.

What I'm not certain about is how exactly a buyout takes place.

What I mean by this, and we've heard this at various junctures along the way, is that the NYI are NOT allowed to pay for his buyout. This has to come out of his OWN pocket.

That said, I'm sure there are ways to perhaps get him the money. Most likely is that he'd simply get the highest ELC gage possible.

And I'd have no problem with that. By all means, the young man is special - as in, he could be simply dominant by his 3rd NHL season.

As a treasured prospect he's probably gonna get a loaded ELC anyway. Which still only guarantees him ~900k with maybe another 200k-800k in bonuses so I don't know if that would help much. Is his KHL salary that low?

I don't know how they'd do it.

I'm sure it can be done somehow in a manner that is good for him and the NYI, especially in Russia.

The upside of going to the NHL is incredible so if he is confident in his abilities, it’s a no brainer. What does he have to lose over the long term as he can always go back?

It always surprises me how the impact of the cultural change is so often underestimated here. The bottom line is that Russians like living in Russia. Lot of people seem to have problems wrapping this around their head. They don't necessarily speak any English and for Russians family is very important. Russian is much more family-centered than Finland or US for example. Yes, I know how things are in Russia but we are talking about wealthy hockey players here. Especially Moscow and St. Petersburg are extremely nice cities if you have a thick wallet. Considering taxes and the general price level, they also make good money. Yes, it seems like a no-brainer but to abandon your family, friends and "easy" money is not always that easy. Even though they are professional hockey players, they are still human beings. And yes I think that it would help a lot if we'd have few Russians in our team.

I could be wrong but I think his KHL salary is much higher than he would get here and it's tax free?

Could've guessed Nick Pastujov would be our leading NCAA prospect.

Only 1 goal off of his career high.

KHL salary is higher and tax free.

The Isles good faith here is - they agree to burn 1 year of his ELC - I believe this was how they got Andrea Lee to sign and not go to Free agency- so there is precedent for a move like this.

Sorokin would buyout his deal and come over with - I agree - the highest bonuses allowed on ELC - 925k salary and a guarantee he makes the team or he can go back home. The season after he is a RFA and can sign a higher deal.

I agree he needs a stronger caddy and maybe a Varlamov or Bobrovsky to help transition.

More Russians - Komarov with maybe Panarin and Bobrovsky is a good start!

When I watched Michigan last year he looked like a definite bottom 6 prospect. He was very smart defensively and if he now is getting some more ice time he could possibly be a late bloomer. He certainly was not Cammarota level.

You make excellent points about cultural changes, family and comfort of playing at home with money.

Going into this, he is being told he can be the best in his position possibly in the world. He will have to want to maximize his compensation.

I also consider the dire straits the KHL is in.
The article is over a year old but I assume it is still relevant to my point.

KHL cuts team, reveals 6-month salary delays

Add to that the awful travel with old planes. I know Bridgeport is not fun but travel here is much better than travel in Russia.

Ideally the players are talking to countrymen who have made the trip and you have to believe that they are encouraging. Fellow countrymen like Ovi winning the cup with Trotz as coach and his assistants would be a positive.

It would be helpful for his transition if the Isles had other Russian players on their roster. Snow did a very poor job with that. Hopefully this is something Lou will improve on.

Sorry, about travel and salary delays, are we talking about CSKA team here, who are sponsored by a top Russian oil company Rosneft? Not to mention that around 75% of the KHL teams (yes, I even counted those) doesn't have those issues at all.

Boston College looks horrible early in the season. Wahlstrom should bolt to the CHL.

BC had a tough early schedule. All their games were against nationally ranked teams. BC was preseason #1 in Hockey East. I would think they will turn it around. To early to panic.
