If you have to trade a player to keep Mikheyev, you're going to have to trade one of Nylander, Kapanen or Johnson. Nylander makes $6.9 mil, Johnson 3.4 mil, and Kapanen 3.2 mil. Right now those three are on pace for more or less the same amount of points. In my opinion, you trade Nylander. I used to love the guy but let's face it, he's super soft and isn't a playoff performer. He was awful last year and a non-factor in the Boston series. If he can bounce back this year, that's great- his trade value will go up and can be used as trade bait. Leafs can thus clear that $6.9 mil in exchange for a top 4 cost-controlled Dman. And Mikheyev can be resigned on a cheap 1-2 year bridge deal or a 3-4 year deal like they did with Kap/Johnson.
