He is unreal. Kid is a pleasure to watch. I wonder if he has played his last game in Hamilton though...

With players now gone to World Junior camps and the trade deadline being roughly a month away, the next few weeks should be interesting. A question for fellow Bulldogs fans: what roster changes/moves do you think the Bulldogs will make?

Here are my predictions (pure speculation), which I'll break down:

Since the Bulldogs are in a rebuild, I can't imagine any big acquisitions but I think we'll see a bit of movement, but not a lot. Overall, I think the core will mostly remain. Right off the bat, I doubt Kaliyev or Jenik get traded. Neither are eligible for the AHL next season due to age. The only options next year for both guys will be OHL or NHL. They may get a few NHL games next year but I believe they will remain in the OHL next season. Despite being in a rebuild, the Bulldogs still want to make the playoffs, and get some playoff wins (maybe even a round). The playoff experience would be more beneficial to the team and helping the younger guys develop than selling off the top line and doing a massive shakeup.

Arthur Kaliyev - There isn't much left for Kaliyev to achieve with another team. Kaliyev can focus on his two-way game. He's probably not looking to get traded, and if he were on a contender, he would be relied on for his offence. By keeping him in Hamilton, Kaliyev can continue to work on his two-way game and get guaranteed PK time, which is exactly what the LA Kings want. If he's traded to another team, they will have others more qualified PK specialists. With the new trade rules which restricts draft picks within the next 4 years to be traded, gone are the days where a team get get a windfall of 2nd rounders for a player. Hamilton traded Connor McMichael a 2nd, 3x conditional 2nds, and a conditional 3rd for Robert Thomas. It's tough to get that return now with the new rules of trading draft picks up to 4 years away. Hamilton could still get a massive return for him next season.

Jan Jenik - Hamilton didn't trade much to acquire Jenik's rights (a 4th and 5th). While they could get a very nice return for him (from a team that has room for an import or is willing to trade one), there's also as much value in keeping him in Hamilton as an elite linemate with Kaliyev, and having a consistent player who draws penalties. Keep him for the remainder of the season and he could play a key role in clinching a decent playoff position and winning some playoff games. There's no loss in keeping him.

Most likely traded:
Kade Landry (OA) - Really improved with the increased ice-time and promotion to #1 D. Would be a solid puck-moving D for any team looking to contend for an OHL championship this year. Landry is the only one I can pinpoint saying that they will likely be traded, and it is a credit to his reliable game. The acquisition of Staios was probably to take over the role if Landry is traded.

Possibly traded:
Bradey Johnson (OA) - If he's traded, it's because Staios can flip him for a better return that what he acquired Johnson for from Niagara (a 15th), and can find another solid two-way player to fill the skates. Maybe that player is Nurse returning to the line-up and they don't acquire anyone to replace Johnson. It was also make room for Winterton to have more ice-time since Johnson and Winterton have been the 3rd and 4th line Cs.

Navrin Mutter - We all know his game - plays with a lot of heart and brings a very physical game. Fans (and players) love to have him but would hate to play against him. Takes selfish penalties at times, but adds a lot of character, energy, and toughness to the team. I expect teams wills inquire about him. If he is traded, I would be surprised if he stays in our division. Ideally I'd want him in the west... so that Hamilton only plays against him twice a year.

Unlikely to be traded:
Isaac Nurse (OA) - The main reason I think Nurse doesn't get traded is because the return would be slow low for a rental who has missed significant time to injury this season. Let him finish his OHL career as captain at home.

Nathan Staios - After the high price Hamilton gave for N.Staios, it doesn't make sense to move him. If anything, the pile of draft picks Hamilton traded for N.Staios makes be believe he was brought in with the expectation to soon become the #1 D.

Liam Van Loon - If Kaliyev and Jenik stay in Hamilton, so will Van Loon. Jenik has been very vocal in interviews about crediting Van Loon and what he brings to the top line's success.

17 year olds - For the most part, I don't expect to see these guys moved. Maybe 1 or 2 will be traded for some reason, but the 17 year olds are part of the rebuild for the team's future. This includes Morrisson, Hayes, Diaco, Young, Duarte, Renwick, White, Jenkins, and Costantini.

Goalies - Roy and Costantini are a solid young tandem.

Unsure:
Tyler Bertuzzi - I think Bertuzzi may be the biggest question. On one hand, Hamilton just acquired him at the last deadline (then injured for the season), and he has only played 3.5 months with the Bulldogs. He's part of the secondary scoring and it doesn't make sense to trade him already. On the other hand, I can see Staios being open to talking to teams calling to kick tires on Bertuzzi. He could fit well with a team that is looking to add depth and make a run either this season or next season. Bertuzzi is an important part to the Bulldogs, so Staios would demand a solid return for Bertuzzi.

I fully expect for there to be a few surprises leading up to the trade deadline. Maybe they will acquire another import. Another thing to consider is that younger forwards could benefit with more ice-time if room is made for them to move up in the lineup. Obviously I didn't list everyone either. What are your thoughts and predictions?

Agree with most of this post.

I thought that European born players can go to the AHL at age 19? If this is the case, wouldn't it be possible that this is his last year in Jr? If it is, I think that greatly increases the chances of him being traded.

I think you’re right, and I completely forgot some imports can go at age 19. Additionally, Jenik is 19 already and meets the AHL age requirements of non-import players next season anyway (must be age 20 by Dec.31).

I find import age rule for AHL eligibility a bit confusing with imports because some can go at age 19 (which I forgot about), and some have to wait until age 20. Maybe the age 20s are the foreign players who were drafted as North Americans because they played up through the GTHL (Nikita Korostelev for example)?

I think that you're right about that.

Jenik is the main one that I think could be dealt. I don't think that OHL insider has mentioned him yet. It should be very interesting.

I think that you're right about Landry. I don't think Kaliyev will land a spot in the NHL next season so I doubt they will deal him.

I think that Nate Staios has been a disappointment. It looks like he's forcing his game which is understandable. Hopefully he relaxes with time. The amount that they gave up for him, along with his dad being the GM must put a lot of pressure on the kid.

If Nurse can get healthy it would be like the Bulldogs added somebody via trade anyways, since he has missed pretty much the entire season.

As much as our D struggles at times I think that some of our young players are developing nicely. Renwick has a toughness to his game that we lack. Vescio is playing very well imo and White is impressive for a 16 yr old and I think that he could be a good one. Jenkins has the size that we need but his footspeed is just too slow imo.

In Jeniks case, he was drafted to the NHL in the summer of 2018, seven months before he reported to the CHL. Because he wasn't drafted out of the CHL, he would have been permitted to play AHL before his OA year. Not that his stats last season warranted that this year. Next season is his OA year so all the options would be on the table for him regardless of what league he was drafted out of. Based on his body of work this season I don't expect him back next year.

Pretty sure he's already gone. Canadas camp is underway so I would think that both Jenik and Kaliyev would be at their teams camps.

Hope I'm wrong.lol

Question I would pose, if Kaliyev and Jenik are likely staying next year, do you load up for a run then?

Not sure, but I don't think this scenario will happen. I think that Kaliyev might still be here, but I would be extremely surprised if Jenik is still here.

Congrats to Jenik on getting an A with the Czech team. Not sure if we will see him again with the Bulldogs.
If he is AHL eligible (pretty sure he is?) for next season I agree he won’t be back in the CHL. I think you may have seen the last of Jenik already as IMO Hamilton may look to move him to load up on assets for future seasons? Never a for sure of course but if I were the GM of a team looking to go for it he would be great acquisition. Great time to move while he is at the WJC. Solid player .....

Yep, I would agree with this assessment. It's too bad Isaac Nurse has been hurt all year. We never got a chance to see how good this team could be. Nurse, Morrison and Bertuzzi gives them a solid second line.

I'll be surpised if they don't deal Jenik though.

Nurse could really help a contending team. Not sure if Hamilton would trade him though.

How was Nurse tonight?
Any reports on his health and returning to the lineup?
For his first game back, I thought he played well. Lots of energy and didn’t shy from physical play. Unfortunately I didn’t catch the entire game so I’m not entirely sure what his ice time was like.

OHL Live has free feeds right now if you want to watch today’s game versus Guelph. If you want to watch on a phone or tablet, I found its easiest to register and enter the code the single game pass on a computer, then login to watch on the phone or tablet.

Nurse might have been there best player in his first game back. Plenty of energy and physicality. He left briefly in the 3rd period, but it looked like a cramp.

Played the next day in Guelph and scored another goal so he looks good.
