With players now gone to World Junior camps and the trade deadline being roughly a month away, the next few weeks should be interesting. A question for fellow Bulldogs fans: what roster changes/moves do you think the Bulldogs will make?
Here are my predictions (pure speculation), which I'll break down:
Since the Bulldogs are in a rebuild, I can't imagine any big acquisitions but I think we'll see a bit of movement, but not a lot. Overall, I think the core will mostly remain. Right off the bat, I doubt Kaliyev or Jenik get traded. Neither are eligible for the AHL next season due to age. The only options next year for both guys will be OHL or NHL. They may get a few NHL games next year but I believe they will remain in the OHL next season. Despite being in a rebuild, the Bulldogs still want to make the playoffs, and get some playoff wins (maybe even a round). The playoff experience would be more beneficial to the team and helping the younger guys develop than selling off the top line and doing a massive shakeup.
Arthur Kaliyev - There isn't much left for Kaliyev to achieve with another team. Kaliyev can focus on his two-way game. He's probably not looking to get traded, and if he were on a contender, he would be relied on for his offence. By keeping him in Hamilton, Kaliyev can continue to work on his two-way game and get guaranteed PK time, which is exactly what the LA Kings want. If he's traded to another team, they will have others more qualified PK specialists. With the new trade rules which restricts draft picks within the next 4 years to be traded, gone are the days where a team get get a windfall of 2nd rounders for a player. Hamilton traded Connor McMichael a 2nd, 3x conditional 2nds, and a conditional 3rd for Robert Thomas. It's tough to get that return now with the new rules of trading draft picks up to 4 years away. Hamilton could still get a massive return for him next season.
Jan Jenik - Hamilton didn't trade much to acquire Jenik's rights (a 4th and 5th). While they could get a very nice return for him (from a team that has room for an import or is willing to trade one), there's also as much value in keeping him in Hamilton as an elite linemate with Kaliyev, and having a consistent player who draws penalties. Keep him for the remainder of the season and he could play a key role in clinching a decent playoff position and winning some playoff games. There's no loss in keeping him.
Most likely traded:
Kade Landry (OA) - Really improved with the increased ice-time and promotion to #1 D. Would be a solid puck-moving D for any team looking to contend for an OHL championship this year. Landry is the only one I can pinpoint saying that they will likely be traded, and it is a credit to his reliable game. The acquisition of Staios was probably to take over the role if Landry is traded.
Possibly traded:
Bradey Johnson (OA) - If he's traded, it's because Staios can flip him for a better return that what he acquired Johnson for from Niagara (a 15th), and can find another solid two-way player to fill the skates. Maybe that player is Nurse returning to the line-up and they don't acquire anyone to replace Johnson. It was also make room for Winterton to have more ice-time since Johnson and Winterton have been the 3rd and 4th line Cs.
Navrin Mutter - We all know his game - plays with a lot of heart and brings a very physical game. Fans (and players) love to have him but would hate to play against him. Takes selfish penalties at times, but adds a lot of character, energy, and toughness to the team. I expect teams wills inquire about him. If he is traded, I would be surprised if he stays in our division. Ideally I'd want him in the west... so that Hamilton only plays against him twice a year.
Unlikely to be traded:
Isaac Nurse (OA) - The main reason I think Nurse doesn't get traded is because the return would be slow low for a rental who has missed significant time to injury this season. Let him finish his OHL career as captain at home.
Nathan Staios - After the high price Hamilton gave for N.Staios, it doesn't make sense to move him. If anything, the pile of draft picks Hamilton traded for N.Staios makes be believe he was brought in with the expectation to soon become the #1 D.
Liam Van Loon - If Kaliyev and Jenik stay in Hamilton, so will Van Loon. Jenik has been very vocal in interviews about crediting Van Loon and what he brings to the top line's success.
17 year olds - For the most part, I don't expect to see these guys moved. Maybe 1 or 2 will be traded for some reason, but the 17 year olds are part of the rebuild for the team's future. This includes Morrisson, Hayes, Diaco, Young, Duarte, Renwick, White, Jenkins, and Costantini.
Goalies - Roy and Costantini are a solid young tandem.
Unsure:
Tyler Bertuzzi - I think Bertuzzi may be the biggest question. On one hand, Hamilton just acquired him at the last deadline (then injured for the season), and he has only played 3.5 months with the Bulldogs. He's part of the secondary scoring and it doesn't make sense to trade him already. On the other hand, I can see Staios being open to talking to teams calling to kick tires on Bertuzzi. He could fit well with a team that is looking to add depth and make a run either this season or next season. Bertuzzi is an important part to the Bulldogs, so Staios would demand a solid return for Bertuzzi.
I fully expect for there to be a few surprises leading up to the trade deadline. Maybe they will acquire another import. Another thing to consider is that younger forwards could benefit with more ice-time if room is made for them to move up in the lineup. Obviously I didn't list everyone either. What are your thoughts and predictions?
