"Finally became a Flyer, just too little too late, and the 5th round pick was so enticing..."

"they needed the cap space"

"while good with the puck, was a defensive liability"

"got pushed around"

"had to bring in a true top-pairing defenseman and partner for Provorov"

"wasn't even scoring that much until late in the season"

"lost a step or two due to injuries"

He has been among the most engaged players on the ice, far beyond chasing down Friedman at the nothing end of a nothing game. He has thrown some of the hardest hits and looked hungriest for the puck. I particularly appreciate when he gets the puck behind the net, he is fully looking at options rather than flinging a beanbag to centre ice, which includes tracking how the forechecker will be playing him. Against the Penguins, I noticed a subtle counter-adjustment of Gostisbehere's movement from behind the net: on one play, rather than stand in front of the net, the forechecker tried to go after Gost and he moved out on the other side and headed up ice. A few minutes later, the forechecker didn't even hesitate before trying to fish him out, and Gost was moving ahead on the opposite side before the forechecker even got to the far post. It was the type of baiting that a confident puck-mover does and SO much more effective than the mechanical stretch pass.
:handclap: Perfectly said.

Even if we ignore all the other positive things he does on the ice, the puck moving alone is so incredibly valuable.

Healthy scratching him certainly lit a fire under him :naughty:

Is there a convenient reference for NHL suspensions?

I think the league’s vendetta against the Flyers skipped the Richards era.

Hell
I just hope AV plays him once the suspension is done.

I don’t think it should, but if this Flyers/Ghost story must end. I want it to end in a way worthy of remembrance. Not with a suspension and subsequent benching.

Whether someone likes him or not, he’s done some beautiful things on the ice for this team.
He is suspended until next year...

“While defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere had a nice bounce back season -- with 20 points in 40 games, along with a +/- rating of -5 -- the Flyers struggled with fit issues on the backend all season, compiled by Matt Niskanen’s absence on the top pair. Flyers general manager, Chuck Fletcher, watched his team bleed too many goals. At that point, a 3rd pairing offensive defenseman became a luxury the Flyers could simply not afford. This was Fletcher's logic behind trading Gostisbehere and a 2nd round draft pick to the Seattle Kraken, in the process freeing up the cap space for David Savard’s new 4 year contract.

As Fletcher said after the signing, ‘We really like the shape of our defense this season with adding David. David's been around the block. He brings that defense first, hard to play against game that we felt was lacking. We obviously need more out of the rest of the group, especially the young guys, but this is a good fit for our hockey club.’

If the number one priority this off-season was to solve the goals against mystery, the Flyers believe they are on the right track.”

After 240+ games, Haggs offense has finally been tapped. Expect the floodgates to open now.

I appreciate Ghost’s efforts to goon it up and make himself unattractive to Seattle :thumbu:

Way to make his job even easier. Now all he has to do is copy and paste.

3 strikes in one week.
Good f***in job NHL

And I love the build of the narrative:
  • Wilson on Buchnevich and Panarin: dismissed as something that happens all the time, which just happens to have resulted in a season-ending injury to a star player
  • Gostisbehere on Friedman: dangerous play to an unsuspecting player that may have caused an injury (spoiler alert: it didn't)
  • Buchnevich on Mantha: a violent response that really does happen frequently within hockey games and that seems to have not caused an injury
All we are missing on our DoPS Bingo card is a star player injures a fourth-liner with a dangerous play and doesn't even get a fine.
