So it's ok as long as you judge it to be ok?

Seriously?

BTW, perhaps the reason Kulemin has no fight history is because he has a habit of throwing gloved punches and then hiding behind a ref?

Kulemin doesn't throw punches at all. This was a case of protecting himself when Gleason got him first in the face, intentional or not. Kulemin never fights, and in scrums he usually just grabs the guys arms, and holds him, while they both watch what else is going on.

Anyways, you can look at this from a variety of perspectives. Should Gleason have thrown a punch while Kulemin still had his gloves on? No, but things happen fast. Should Kulemin have been prepared? Yes, but again, things happen very quickly and I am sure he didn't expect Gleason to drop them and fire on him.

Its both their faults. Gleason got his 5 minute major, Kulemin got his 2 minute roughing penalty, fair call, and I :handclap: the refs for this one. I believe they got it right.

Kulemin either needs to pay attention or stop throwing punches in a scrum. He opened the can of worms and got tagged.

Anyone calling this a cheap shot does not have a clue.

Highlighted the one you needed there. Over in the main board thread someone posted 3 different vids of him throwing on guys who still had their gloves on.

The point itself is flawed. Leafs fans have their panties in a twist because Gleason didn't stop to check Kulemin's driver's license in the middle of an escalating fight. I don't care who the player is, if he's going to start throwing in someone's face he needs to be ready to fight.

What the hell is this league coming to where fans don't think it's necessary to fight after you throw a bunch of gloved punches?
Because it rarely ever happens and because of that Kulemin didn't feel the need to protect himself from a bare knuckle punch?

Do you even listen to yourself?

Kulemin is not there to fight and unlike Gleason he actually has skill. He was only in that scrum to protect his player. If Gleason is dumb enough to sucker punch a non fighter then I guess well see what happens next game if Orr is in the lineup.Hopefully Gleason doesn't chicken out and takes responsibility for what he did.Id like nothing more for Orr do to the same thing.....now that would be poetic justice

I would like to highlight the proper Gleason thought process:

We'll begin shortly after the first punch to the face

Gleason - Hmm. Who is that punching me in the face?
- Oh, I believe it's Nikolai Kulemin. Sure it is. I can make out his face hiding behind that visor.

PUNCH TO THE FACE

Gleason - I am pretty sure this is out of character for this fine Russian fellow. I believe I will consult NHL.com on my IPhone to check his fight statistics before I retaliate. I wouldn't want to upset any of the life nits of HF boards or punch someone who is acting out of character. Perhaps he is simply having a bad day.

PUNCH TO THE FACE

Gleason - Yes. I was right! He is not a dirty player after all. Good thing I didn't hit him back.

PUNCH TO THE FACE

Gleason - Ahh, C'est La Vie!

Brian Burke would trade any player he's signed in Toronto for Gleason, and Carolina would reject every single offer.

If Gleason is dumb enough to sucker punch a non fighter

I've seen several Leafs fans post this without acknowledging the inverse: Kulemin was dumb enough to punch a real fighter.

then I guess well see what happens next game if Orr is in the lineup.Hopefully Gleason doesn't chicken out and takes responsibility for what he did.Id like nothing more for Orr do to the same thing.....now that would be poetic justice

We hear this hot air from Leafs fans after every scrap. Colton Orr will do nothing because he's a nothing player. You want to waste a roster spot? Go right ahead.

Nah, what'll probably happen is Gleason and Orr will fight, because Gleason understands the code and realizes that causing an injury will draw some repercussions.

Who wins the fight is irrelevant, since there's no real hatred there. It's just something that's got to happen.

Hes a fighter. He gets paid to fight, and stick up for his teammates. I aint saying they should send him after Gleason, but to say that Orr wouldn't do it because he sucks at every asset of the game is not an accurate statement.

You're right, I will clarify: if Gleason feels compelled to fight Orr, he will. Otherwise Orr will be irrelevant because the Canes are not a team to get caught up in that stuff.

Gleason is really tough, an uderrated fighter , he is one of the few guys who Made Lucic look really bad, Orr being the other of course!

No, I'm bringing some basic common sense into it. Someone punches you in the face, you punch back. That's life.

AGAIN (since reading comprehension is obviously not YOUR strong point either), Gleason was in a position where a guy who had just punched him in the face had him bent over and had his hands on the back of Gleason's head. At that point, the gloves had already been off for a couple of seconds. What the holy hell was Kulemin expecting... what was he THINKING keeping his gloves on and flailing around like someone who has never seen a hockey fight?

The basic problem here is that Kulemin poked the bear and wasn't prepared to deal with it. Blame Gleason all you want, but Kulemin just lost any mirage of being a "power forward" if that is how he's going to approach the rougher aspects of the game.

thats life? really? its sad that some people believe this should be how things work...

as for the second point... care to explain how? how players act after the whistle has little impact on what happens during real play. people are calling kulemin a power forward (or at least someone who's on the path to becoming one) because he's strong on the boards, hits well, and can plant himself in front of the net with reasonable efficacy, *not* because he punches people after the whistle. being a powerforward does not necessarily mean fighting, or even punching after the whistle.

Nobody is going to call it dirty because it WASN'T dirty. Kulemin knew exactly what he was doing when he decided to rabbit-punch Gleason in the face three times.

Look at the vid right around :10. Gleason's gloves come off more than a full second before he threw a punch, and during that second he had his head down. How was he supposed to know Kulemin would be stupid/chicken enough to try and abort the mission at that point?

Wow! A full second! Like, for realz? Eternity!

Nope, not even close. Kulemin was (or should have been) far from unsuspecting.

Ah yes, the old "2 guys were exchanging gloved taps as happens thousands of times without the other dropping his and firing before the other guy even knows" bit. Of course he should "suspect" it because it happens that way every night. :sarcasm: Here's some homework for you: how many times per season do you see a single fighting penalty handed out?

I'm surprised the officials disagreed with you.:sarcasm:

YES IT DOES.

If you are playing hockey, and some guy comes up and starts jabbing you in the face, and gets you bent over and has his hands on top of your head, would you say at that point he is fighting you?

More to the point, would you take even a second to drop your gloves and start throwing back? I hope not, if you're any kind of man.

Probably not if you've watched or played any amount of hockey.

Love your definition of a "man" though.

First of all... The Leafs suck....So much for that great start to the year...ha ha

Kulemin got exactly what he deserved, 5 knuckles to the face. Don't rabbit punch a guy who can knock the snot (and blood ) out of you.

Maybe Kulemin will think twice next time.

Oh yeah, I love to hear Leaf fans cry foul.

It was a clean punch to the face, that's that.

No human would sit there and let Kulemin jab 3 times and not retaliate.

Who sucks more....Leafs or Jets?

Meet you at the Jets game this week.

Leafs by an infinite amount.

I'll meet you at a Jets game in a few years.

Get rid of Bettman, than Winnipeg will get a team. Bettman is a little rat who won't give up on his dream of hockey in the Sun Belt. Get rid of the rat, then the NHL will be better off.

I actually feel sorry for Leaf fans... Wait, no I don't, it's your choice to cheer for that disgraceful team.

Are they going to keep their team this time? They seem to have a problem doing this.
