Just got back from the game. Not sure what it looked like on TV, but live the Islanders looked really bad. Choppy, no flow, back on their heels at the blue line. And Ilya didn't look sharp either. Lucky to get out of there with two.

Yet, they are 2nd in the division and 8th overall in the league at Xmas.

Here’s the thing, most of the games now are kinda garbage. The game has lost its grit and muscle, it’s more we’ll make mistakes, it’s ok, we’ll hope to out score them. Yay.

That phi/det game was almost AHL/ECHL like bad.

Carolina goalie let in 4 bad goals and the other deflected off Burns . Isles lucky to get 2 points

If true....Then you must really love Lou for wasting over $15,000,000 a year on cap space on Pulock, Pelech, and Mayfield when he could just be paying Aho, Bolduc, and Bortuzzo a combined $2,700,000.
He might have. We also had to let Towes go in order to sign Pelech

The whole game had no flow from both sides. It was sloppy overall. Carolina was basically playing Trotz-era Islanders hockey with substantially more interference (as usual).

Lucky they were up against an ECHL level goalie.
Kochetkov looked terrible, no doubt.

It’s ironic that this is the same guy that shut out the Isles 3-0 at UBS last year.

While I was less than thrilled regarding Sorokin’s performance last night, a game like this reinforces to me how important the Sorokin signing was for the Isles.

Didn’t see the game but the most important thing the Islanders did last night is prove they can beat this team and score goals against them with their more offensive minded style of play. Also it gets into the heads of the Canes that the Isles will not be so easy to beat as in years past. Any win against this team is a good win no matter how it was done.

We have some offense of our own,” coach Lane Lambert said. “They made some pretty good plays on goals. So do we want to go up and down? Eh, not totally. But we can go up and down.”

That’s exactly what his own players need to hear to break the Canes hold on the Islanders.

Have you seen what Kochetkov was doing before this game?

Yep, but too many posters here are too lazy to check . . . 1.50 GAA and a .943 save percentage in the previous 4 games to ours. But it's easy to just keep ragging on OUR PLAY instead and belittle it.

Matheson would be cheaper and would instantly become their best offensive left shot D.

Why? Matheson has two more years on his contract besides this. I see no reason why he's cheaper to acquire than a UFA Hanafin.

The only way we are making a move on D is if we are trading Pelech for Hanafin as an example; there's not enough cap space or assets to move for a major upgrade on this team, which I question the need for anyhow. If Parise comes back, that's the only move I see beyond possibly a Tarasenko at the deadline if Parise does not come back here.

I was fine with Sorokin. Especially in the last 2 minutes of the game.

Most people here will be fine with Sorokin when we stop subjecting him to 35+ shots a game. I think it's ridiculous to play the kind of defense we've been playing all season and then complain that Sorokin isn't stealing wins for us like he did last year.

Yeah

Merry Christmas Eve you buds. Go enjoy some time with Family.

Canes also had like THREE really flukey goals. They had their fair share of "come on how did that one go in???" along with the isles.

I’m expecting more from Sorokin as the Islanders play a more open style of hockey. The defense is still lacking and as Ive said before with tendencies to turtle and block his line of sight ( if they plan to turtle in front of him they need to take a page from Bortuzzi’s book and actually attempt to block shots not just screen the goaltender). It’s been better though with the Isles being more physical against the boards though I would wish they stood up more at the blue line. They tend to retreat too early in particular Romanov and Aho.

That all said both Sorokin and Varlamov have to be better. They have both benefited from Trotz hockey where all shots were kept to the perimeter. They are facing more quality shots now that the Islanders game opened up a bit. Sorokin has to protect his crease better anticipating cross crease passes better and using his stick more. Both Varlamov and Sorokin tend to play far too much inside the crease and need to cut down angles better and be more aggressive outside the crease. They back too far into the crease.

It’s not about what he’s done in the previous 4 games it’s about the quality saves he made and the shots that should not have gone in. Yesterday he made a few quality saves but let in 2 or 3 that should not have had any chance of being goals. Those types of goals are deflating to a team and not sure I’ve seen any Isles games this year where we seen that many soft goals. But a win is a win and for as many games as we get these gifts there are others where we deserved a better fate. I hate 3rd periods for the Isles, but must admit it’s at least nice having a lead !

Matheson also would fetch a decent return for the Habs, and Hanifin got cooked by Byfield yesterday

I'd like Matheson, and i'd honestly trade Wahlstrom, prospect and a 1st for him.
