Nothing in your regular season stats would indicate that Johnny (3 pts) or Monny (4pts) 5v5 in the last 13 playoff games. In 2017 Sean and Bennett both looked dangerous against the Ducks while Johnny played with the same fear and hesitation.
Against the Av's Peters and the coaching staff refused to change the entry strategy by the first line having Johnny carrying the puck until he hit 2 or 3 Avalanche players at the blue line causing almost an instantaneous turn-over or a dump-in from a poor position.
After re-watching the Anaheim series from 2017 and the Avalanche series of 2019 you will notice how the focus of both teams was to knock Johnny off his game and in doing so getting Johnny to look to the ref's to save him. It took about 1/2 to 3/4 of a game to get Johnny to a point where he quit skating for the series and with every non-call Johnny became more and more abusive to the referees.
Ironically in 2017, Gully adjusted his entries while Peters did not. Monahan and Bennett were effective but bad a combination of bad goaltending and poor play by Johnny sunk the Flames hopes. Believe it or not the Flames were much closer to winning the series in 2017 than they were this year. Other than on the PP Johnny was completely ineffective the entire series.
Monahan was given the opportunity in 2017 to drive the play and despite not having played that role in 2.5 years he was very effective. If Johnny would have become engaged in the game-plan the Flames could have seen very different results.
Ironically the only proven playoff performer the Flames do have at this point offensively or defensively is Sam Bennett. The same Sam Bennett that half of those on this board wanted traded. I am starting to see Sam Bennett in the same mould as Justin Williams. Sam may never be stellar in 82 games but come the post-season he is nothing but money.
Monahan's performance ----WHEN you actually watch the games and not just look at stats---- was fairly impressive in 2017 and this is the only reason why I would give him another chance without Gaudreau.
Here are another 2 Amazing regular season performers that never delivered a cup. Between them they had 9 - 80 plus seasons and were touted as the best line in hockey. ZERO Stanley Cups. They did however put up the most team points in a season since the salary cap area started until this year.

If Calgary sticks with Gaudreau as their #1 LW this is Calgary's destiny. Just another Sedin-afternoon.
