He plays a 200 ft game and distributes the puck. Face offs are only a fraction of what is necessary to be an NHL centre.

well that’s not really how it works. Some wingers are great 200 foot players and some Center’s hang out at waiting for breakout passes. Center’s indeed do take faceoffs (albeit the odd caveat) that’s part of the job. Just being defensively responsible doesn’t make you a Center.
Jere Letinin was a right winger and won 3 Selkes... constantly one of the best 2 way forwards in the league.

Center’s role :

take faceoffs

Cover the third attacking forward (be a third d-man)

Support your defensemen covering the net front slot.

Maintain a support position during battles, look for loose pucks in the deep zone

Attack puck carriers moving through seams and scoring areas

Stay “d-side” on the open forward.

Be available to move up through the middle during a breakout.

Outside Of this last one, it was JTM that was doing these things.

EP40 is basically a winger. He doesnt take faceoffs

I would say this is an incredible simplification of what NHL centres do but...this is not even that.

If being a centre only required being good at faceoffs, then you could make anyone "good" at centre just by practicing faceoffs.

Plus in reality, all forwards play all forward positions.

Weird comment Johnny...me thinks you are just trying to stir stuff up.

Hmm, I wonder why he magically stopped taking faceoffs this year?! Oh yeah, this JT Miller guy who is the best in the league at it! Bingo!

Not JUST faceoffs. Look at the other Responsibilities I posted. JTM does 5/6 of them. You ignored that part as it doesn’t serve your point.

Jerome Igilna took a lot of faceoffs was he a centre to then? Certain forwards play the point on the PP are they Dman then? Pettersson is bad at faceoffs obviously hence he doesn't take them but he still plays the position once the puck has been dropped.

Is Manny Malhotra is the greatest centre ever in the entire history of the franchise?

Kyle Wellwood’s skate is the best centre in franchise history if this is the criteria. Also Kesler is under appreciated as an all time best Canuck at faceoffs. Malholtra was a specialist but Kester took the most important draws by far.

Aww, it's so cute you reply to my posts despite my very public opinion of you.

*double bonus-- you proved my point*

That you don't get my point is exactly the point.

Why are we criticizing EP over this?
I think your mixing up posts I'm not criticizing EP for not taking faceoffs. Plenty of centres don't that doesn't make him less of a centre for me. I responded to someone who says he's not a centre because he doesn't do faceoffs. I think he's a fine centre and our 1C.

You see a lot of Dmen taking faceoffs?
We see more defenceman take faceoffs in a year I would bet than we see Pettersson even strength shifts as a winger.
Pettersson is a centre. Faceoffs can be taken by anyone. Centre is a positional thing, with specific tasks and responsibilities. Winger is far easier. But you already know all this. You’re just one of those “edgelords.”

I’m too old to know what an Edgelord is, so I’m choosing to take it as a compliment. Thank you.

As for your comment about defensman taking faceoffs? Hahahahah come on man. Show me these defensman in the NHL taking these faceoffs. Hahahhh

Wayne Gretzky with high praise for 'that young kid in Vancouver' who reminds him a lot of himself in his early days in the league." Lofty praise indeed, which apparently stunned Pettersson when he heard about it through the Swedish media.

The Great One went on to say that what makes Pettersson so great, is how well he sees the ice and his awareness of everyone around him. He says he's not the fastest skater out there or physically intimidating, but succeeds in opening up the ice for his team-mates.

I know it'll sound like sacrilege....but I think already Pettersson shot is better than the Great One's ever was. Might be the composite sticks, but he shoots the puck harder and with more accuracy. Just my opinion though.

Pettersson not taking face-offs that much is a pretty small concern.
Miller is 2nd in the league in face-off percentage behind just Couturier.
Pettersson is one of the best possession players in the League.
I think it is pretty easy to see why they defer to Miller.

Vancouver probably has the best face-off coach in the league.
Hence the reason they have 3 players in the top 10 in face-off percentage with minimum 500 taken.
I'm sure Malhotra will work with Petey once he develops some more strength.

So if you ONLY do one thing out of the above (Faceoffs) then you're a winger as well yes? Because as a Center that's about all Bo Horvat can do at the NHL level. Of the two (Pettersson / Horvat) Pettersson is more of a natural Center.
