Does anyone else get the feeling Shero is holding onto our cap space really tightly? Im expecting some big contracts to be signed and possibly a big name or two acquired in the next few years.

Weve cut pennies on all our contracts this summer and are arguing with Wood over what will be a mil or less on the cap per year. Seems odd given our current status and cap space - Shero is certainly keeping this as open as possible for the future.

And no it isnt just good GMing if Wood misses camp. Not saying its bad GMing, just pinching pennies which leads me to believe there are big steps for NJ in the coming years.

Taylor Hall will get a massive deal and Butcher and Hischier will all get substantial raises.

Except Blake Coleman just signed for half of that. Overpaying Wood who wasn’t as impactful as Coleman in the stretch run might not sit well with Coleman.

I understand that - but in terms of potential, you can't compare the two.

No doubt that the Grabner contract would be an overpay - but I think this guy has to get into camp ASAP.

More to the point they think viewers care which they obviously do based on this thread. But it’s a bit of a misnomer to suggest she only got the job because she was a pretty face as if there weren’t thousands of other people who could meet that singular qualification.

I get that Shero’s overpayments in Pittsburgh got him canned there and he’s trying to learn from past mistakes here, but for God’s sake, just pay Wood already. Free agents avoid us like the plague so it’s not like we’ll ever be in contention for any big names in a given offseason, and a hit of $3-4 million a season isn’t going to screw us with the amount of space we’ll have afterward. There will plenty of time to think about putting it to good use when the opportunity arises.

This is the same mentality that gets GMs in trouble with a few of these eh it's just a few bucks type of deals.

Maybe sexy isn't the right word but rather presentation. No one would hire Dano looking like he did after game 7 in '03 but he shaved, put in some teeth and now looks professional on camera. Every on talent personality has to have at least a baseline level of presentation and professionalism, even the players.

Not sure if Daneyko and Salvador have a tailor/shop help put together their suit ensembles for them but I will say they are both pretty snazzy dressers when on the job. Steve looks like he's winging it on his own.

I was only making a judgement based on her looks 'cause that's all I have for now.

But make no mistake, based on her looks alone, she's a definite upgrade, Period.

If it’s a $4 million AAV deal then that’s $14 million in cap space this season. That’s still more than plenty of other teams and more than enough for Shero to use as an asset in a future trade.

I don't think I've ever seen a bigger phony than Arda on MSG. Everything about the guy screams try hard fake. He talks like he's reading lines and does it poorly. Hockey genius is the last thing I think of when I think of him.

Part of the core is a little much for a third liner. To me the core is Hall, Nico, Palm, Vat, Cory and Greene. Coleman is closer to being a core guy than Wood tbh

I don’t even think I’d include Cory and Greene as part of the core anymore, unless you have to include one goalie. Greene only has two years left and is 36. Cory has 4 years left, but is probably not any good anymore.

Its not just what Wood is going to make, it's how it'll set a precedent for when we need to sign all of our other young guys. An extra 500k or 1mil may not seem like much but what happens when another rookie, like Bratt needs a new contract. If he out produces Wood then suddenly he's going to get a raise maybe he doesn't deserve just yet.

Its a trickle down effect. I don't blame Shero for playing hard ball here. At the same time he knows the stakes and he knows Wood is important to the team. I trust this won't be a problem that extends into the season.

You commit big money for any kind of term and there is a real risk you get burned when one of those nasty crashes into the boards finally sticks.

But if it's longer than a year or two what's going to happen when Hall goes up to 10 mil? That 14 becomes 10. What about Vatanen, Hischier, and Butcher all getting raises? That 10 drops again. I know we have a ton of cap space but we without a doubt shouldn't be signing deals for more than is market value just because we've got the money.

I don't know man. Never does a kid good to be sitting out, missing time, or even dealing with a contract.

Realize that Wood is a unicorn here - I'll grant that the Tom Wilson/Milan Lucic contracts are ridiculous and will continue to prove so over time - but we are talking about a bridge contract.

Is Ray at 1.75m (below Coleman) and Wood at 5m (like Wilson?)

I can't believe that. I have to believe the money is somewhere between 2m and 3.25m.

Glen, buddy, You may have missed my posts from earlier as my posts seem to have about a 3 minute shelf life on here but I'm all for this my man. God bless pretty girls. I said before I get enough hockey from Dano and Sal. I want to enjoy my broadcast. And if a pretty girl makes some people here anxious, see somebody for that. Most of us just want to enjoy the game, and our new pal Erika will help with that. Hello deah!

Greene shouldn't be part of the core but he is since he's still the #1D and the captain. Cory arguably shouldn't be part of the core but they are going to need him to get going again considering his contract.

Well then Ray better get on his horse to get Karlsson so they can actually do the promotional stuff

To be fair the cap itself seems to go up every year and other guys will come off the books by then.

It wouldn't surprise me. I mostly just read his stuff for a good laugh. He's had pretty much half the roster getting dealt this summer.

Anyways, this is getting off topic. It's a little concerning to me that reports indicate Wood and the team aren't really close. He made great strides last year but I hope he's not getting a Clarkson ego. If he's truly interested in a bridge deal then I'm not sure what the hold up here is. Fortunately we more depth now than in years past, but if he's going to miss a significant part of camp then conditioning may be a factor early in the season.
