No I don't know that, they say that, but then they say a whole lot of things that they then turn around and back track on.

Now we are back to wearing masks inside even if you have been vaccinated because it's possible you could still carry it. This is after they said we didn't need too, which was a flip that we did need too.

They can tell us anything they want, doesn't mean all of it is true or accurate, and as we've discovered with a guy like Faucci they can deliberately lie and have no qualms about it.

I listen and learn about a lot of things all the time, doesn't mean it will all hold up over time. I mean remember when the lab leak theory would get you banned on Facebook, and derided as crazy Trump talk, silly, an idiot for believing it could be true? Yeah good times.
Case in point, many California counties, if still operating under last year's restriction tiers, would be in the "purple" tier (most restrictive). Our governor will absolutely not roll us back to higher restrictions state-wide, at this point, because it would virtually assure that he loses the upcoming recall election. Counties, include LA County, have had to re-employ indoor mask mandates on their own initiative. This type of behavior just encourages suspicion and skepticism of what our leaders are telling us. This again, though, is the politics and governmental side of the pandemic and not the science itself. When the politicians are frequently delivering the message though...

Well and then they are backed by the media who will just turn around and say " whoops " on page 12 of the life section when it is discovered they are wrong.

I know what we are being told by both scientists and politicians. It doesn't mean it's not a good thing to have some healthy skepticism. There is knowing the information and then there is trusting the information. I know it, I just don't necessarily trust it even if it is currently " the facts ".

The scientific community is still running on a whole lot of hope right now, while some groups want to push that hope as fact.

You are conflating mask recommendations with vaccine efficacy.
It is true without doubt that full vaccination is highly effective at preventing serious illness from COVID.

And I'll use a little metaphor to demonstrate how the mask mandate has returned:

Instead of COVID, imagine that what we were facing is widespread nuclear waste. A lead apron (vaccine) will protect me from being injured by the waste, but if someone splashes a puddle of it on me, it still sticks to me at least for a little while, and if I brush up against someone who isnt wearing a lead apron(unvaccinated) then the stuff stuck to me will get on them but they will possibly/probably get sick.

But, (and this is the KEY CONCEPT) mask mandates are not being reinstated because the vaccines(lead aprons) dont work. They are having to be reinstated because so many dumbasses are walking around in a sea of nuclear waste and have refused lead aprons that have been offered to them.

We arent having a COVID spike and renewed lockdown because of Fauci being a liar, or the government being untrustworthy... it's all happening because so many people are refusing vaccination. Period.

I think it becomes problematic when people distrust the messengers, because they (incorrectly) discard the whole message. But, as I already mentioned, I don't buy that the majority of opposition is all that reasoned in their resistance, so it doesn't matter.

My mom is a good example of this. She’s like a sponge when it comes to soaking up info from her crazy conspiracy Facebook sites and other similar web sources. But she’s like a rock if you try to have a reasonable discussion about it.

She’s super high risk when it comes to covid but the good news is she actually got the vaccine so I don’t have to fight that battle.

Yeah, so is mine. I honestly do not know if she is vaccinated, I suspect she is not because of who she listens to and where she gets her info. With what we have now heard about Delta, I am trying to get ready for "the call" from my brother or sister about my Mom having to go to the hospital. She is 81.

Guys some digression into broader issues is expected but it can't be the whole thread. Multiple covid threads on various team boards have been shut down because there's no attempt made at keeping national politics to a minimum. Give me a good faith effort and *attempt* to do so and we'll continue to allow you guys to discuss amongst yourselves.

If you can't do it, the next time I get summoned here I will close this thread for some time or perhaps permanently.

Due respect, there has been little mention of "national politics" other than discussing trust issues of government in general and the CDC in particular, which is actually THE most salient issue in the current discussion of COVID, ie why people wont accept vaccination.

Well my vaccinated uncle managed to get the delta variant and just had a massive stroke, his brain is bleeding and we are basically just waiting for him to go.

I was actually surprised to find out he was vaccinated because of my family I figured he would be one not to get it. Sucks.

Damn. I know we have argued but I am truly sorry for your loss.
Also sorry for the loss... but it sounds like it had no relation to Covid?

My aunt died a couple months ago and my antivaxx dumb familia said it was due to the Vaccine... but it wasn't, she was just 84 years old and weighed like 400 lbs. There isn't much point in conflating some of these things, but some people with agendas do it anyway.

We done don't know for sure but we do know Covid can cause blood clots which is what causes strokes.

It's the main reason I got vaccinated, my wife has laden factor 5 so I did it to try and protect her.

Oh God, so sorry to hear that. Prayers that he may be at peace...and for that of you and your family. This damn thing is awful.

At the risk of being insensitive, do you know if your Uncle had the single shot Johnson/Johnson vaccine? It apparently is not quite as good against delta as Pfizer and Moderna.

Sorry to read this. Delta is a whole new ballgame. It’s like we shouldn’t even call it COVID with how aggressive it is. Please everyone get the vaccine

He had one of the ones that is two doses as going through his Facebook posts I can see where he had one in April the other in May.

My aunt made a post 3 days ago she had it so I'm assuming that's when he got it as well.

In GMA this morning they said you were 3x less likely to get COVID if you had the vaccine and 10x less likely for hospitalization or death.

I feel like the bar is moving.
The bar will be in constant motion. There will be new variants basically forever if we keep giving the virus millions of hosts for mutation. So far they haven't drifted too far from the original strain, so the originally developed vaccines are still effective. But we'll probably be looking at getting new boosters at some point and just crossing our fingers that some truly nefarious strain never emerges.

Mainstream media is really botching the reporting on vaccine efficacy in search of clicks and attention grabbing headlines. Say one person out of 100 vaccinated people get COVID and 4 people out of 5 unvaccinated get it the headline reads "20% of new COVID cases are in the vaccinated"... just mindblowingly stupid and misleading stuff... someone before had talked about "fear porn" and that's exactly what this kind of misinformation is.

But the 10x less likely for hospitalization and death sounds about right. Unvaccinated high risk people had about a 5% chance of a bad outcome and now it probably 0.5% after vaccination. And if I had to bet most of those have rather severe preexisting conditions or are in their 80s or 90s.

I saw a report the other day of the Biden administration complaining about the news coverage of it and almost busted out laughing. I get the previous administration may have gone about it the wrong way, but the sentiment against the media wasn't exactly wrong.

As long as bringing the news can make billions its gonna be like this. It doesn't matter who is in control.

Makes an old guy like me miss the 70s when there were 3 channels, they all ran national news at 530pm and were done in 30 minutes.
