Yeah, the Coliseum is not in what I’d consider the best part of town..., but I have always been intrigued by the Gus Sir Beef restaurant off of Wendover. With a name like Gus Sir Beef, how can it be bad? (Actually not sure if they’re still open....I don’t pass by there very often anymore. I tend to stay in my little world around Southeast Clt/Matthews/Indian Trail/Waxhaw)

They're still open according to Google Maps.

I ate there once, like 6 years ago or so. It was okay. The cornbread was awesome. It's a southern country cooking mom and pop like place. Kind of like Lizards Thicket in Columbia if anyone here is familiar with that, @garnetpalmetto ?

"Fresh My Farm" -- what the **** does that mean?

Gus' is one of the dwindling number of survivors from the era when most of the decent restaurants in Charlotte were owned, inexplicably, by Greek families. It's been through some changes due to family disagreements when it passed from one generation to the next, but it's still the meat-and-three with Greek trimmings that characterized East Charlotte restaurants at one time. The same cultural mix produced Showmars, which is a Bojangles-level culinary asset.

BTW, the sign was supposed to say "Sir Gus' Beef -- 'Fresh From My Farm' Vegetables", but Gus couldn't speak straight English and apparently the signmaker gave him what he asked for.

Other surviving old school Greek/Southern diners in Charlotte:
South 21 (drive-in very close to the arena, on the other side of the boulevard)
The Diamond (not far from the arena, in Plaza-Midwood)
BBQ King (drive-in on other side of town, on Wilkinson)
Green's Lunch (uptown)
Open Kitchen (Morehead St near uptown)
Philadelphia Diner (Kings Dr near uptown)
Mrs. K's (South End)
Greystone Pub (South End)

If you want something that's authentically and weirdly Charlotte, any of these restaurants (or a Showmars) would do the trick.

Looks like all 7 games.

EDIT: And now I'm noticing a few games will be delayed on NHL Network. They may get $25 from me yet!

I wonder what feed they’ll have on these broadcasts and if the format will be in HD. I’d much rather watch games 2-5 (will prob go to 6&7 if it goes that far) on the 50”
Tv vs 10” iPad screen. The AHL app gives you the option of whose color commentary you want, just like NHL center ice. Shaya can get a little grating sometimes.

I propose a drinking game:

-every time Shaya gets overly excited about an icing call = drink

-every time he mentions a player skating the puck in the zone or off the boards on his off shooting side = drink

-every time he screams “...FIREZ It!!!” where a player from either team barely gets off a weak wrister = drink

If I could describe him as a broadcaster in one word, it’d be “scrappy.”

Wanna hear something funny?

The AHL lost a $25 sale from me because I was gonna pick up AHLTV for the finals but now they're on NHL Network and I have NHL Network.

I bought AHLTV middle of the checkers last game. Then missed OT. Wasted $25.

How early should I get there tonight? I saw long lines and havent ever been to a Checkers game before

Plan to get there around an hr prior to puck drop and you’ll be fine. A tip that worked out well for me last weekend, don’t plan on taking 74/Independence Blvd to Bojos, take Monroe Rd and turn in on a back road (Chipley Rd or Drive off of Monroe Rd will take you directly to the $8 lot). We did this last weekend for the largest crowd ever at a Checkers game and were parked within 5 mins of turning off of Monroe Rd. I tend to avoid Hwy 74 at all costs by the way so I’m a little biased...

The lines for beer and food will suck regardless. Look for the places on the lowest levels close to the “Red Line Club”, those lines tend to be a tad shorter. Hopefully the craft beer is still $4 a pop...

Added bonus: Monroe Rd takes you past Lupie’s
