This is just burning money for the sake of burning money. They can bury the whole cap hit but it still a contract spot wasted. Do they think they need a token franco around to keep the idiots in the media quiet?
Contract spot wasted?

What other obligations do they have?
Who are we not signing because of this?

This is a direct FU at Carolina. If we end up sending Hudon through waivers, his $800k contract may give them some pause of claiming if they were planning to retaliate. We sure showed them.

In all seriousness, we got 3 contract spots left I think.

He's not a 4th line player.
He's either in the top 9 or out of the lineup. With Shaw traded, it opens up a spot for him.
It will all come down to how well he plays in training camp/preseason.
I don't see how. Hockey IQ-wise he is on par with Drouin. He is not physical and definitely not a shutdown kind of guy. So... what's left?

Offense, creativity, play making?

And he is a bit physical. He finished 4th in hits among forwards on our team in his rookie season, and last year he had 73 hits in 32 games, which is very impressive.

Rumors : He'll be put on waiver October 2nd (E8)

... yes, and he won't be claimed.

this is one of the ways the Habs take advantage of having deep pockets. sign a "2-way quality" player to a one way contract and no-one will touch them on waivers.

now, if only they can use those deep pockets for more useful strategies.

burning money or burning the contract spot? which are you concerned about here?

just give Hudon the team's 2 best wingers and see if he can figure it out over the next 5 years.

Hudon doesn't want to play at AHL level at all. So, he,s gonna play with the Habs or elsewhere in the NHL, or in some European pro league

he doesn't have much of a choice now that he's under contract, so if he doesn't make the Habs then they will send him to the AHL or try and trade him, if no takers via trade or waivers then he'll be Laval bound.

Last year MB seemed to give the finger to Laval, he really f***ed them over as they could have made the playoffs if they had a legit goal scorer or two for more then a few weeks. This year he seems to have set them up really well. Hudon would be a great add for Laval and a chance to finally win more then 1 game in the AHL playoffs over the last 8 years.

A good GM has to see the big picture in that you have to instill a winning atmosphere throughout your organization. Young players coming up through the ranks develop much better in a winning environment

If he could fix his skating he is NHL caliber. Sadly, we have been saying the same statement for the past 3 years now and nothing is fixed yet.

Last chance because he is no 4th line player either.

If the roster doesn't change until then, there's 3 open spots for 3 of the following forwards :

1- Kotkaniemi
2- Cousins
3- Hudon
4- Peca
5- Weise
6- Poehling
7- Peca
8- Suzuki

Hudon is in the conversation.

7- Peca (listed twice)

Assuming your locks are: Domi, Drouin, Danault, Armia, Lehkonen, Byron, Gallagher, Tatar, and ?

9. Thompson
10. Weal
11. Varone <-- played 47 NHL games last season
12. Barber
13. McCarron

I'm guessing KK, Cousins, Weal, and Thompson round out the top 12.
Laval = McCarron, Barber, Varone, Weise, Suzuki, Poehling
So it should be Hudon and Peca battling for the 13th forward spot with one of them getting waived on their way to Laval

I don't understand this signing at all.

The point is to not lose an asset for nothing, at least for a little while. If he doesn't make the team, they'll probably try to find him a place on another team or even send him on waivers where he might get another if he's claimed. Nothing wrong with that. His salary can be buried 100% too, so no cap risk. A team losing a depth player early and wanting it's prospects to develop in the AHL might trade a late pick for his rights. Who knows.
