I can't post in the NHL thread because someone got mad at me, but Marchand does have a good point here.

Taxi squads aren't going to do anything. It'll help teams send warm bodies on the ice, but it's not going to make a competitive or fair product. It's a cynical ploy by owners to continue lining their pockets instead of doing what's right: shutting the league down until COVID is under control.

Marchand seems to be advocating that the NHL continue to play with taxi squad players while the elite players go to the Olympics.

That seems like a terrible idea to me. Imagine Edmonton missing the playoffs by 1 point because McDrai were gone.

If the owners don’t make money, then we don’t have a league. This socialistic approach you are taking doesn’t fly here, as these Pro Sports leagues aren’t a requirement, they are a privilege.

would you rather see less and less teams then?

and please humour me with the pro sports leagues that are doing *really well* under socialist or communist regimes?

I wouldn't worry about the NHL owners, whose median net worth is somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500,000,000. For some reason I think they are going to be just fine.

I'm proposing that the owners take a temporary loss by shutting the league down so that the product on the ice is better and so that players and their families, especially those with young children ineligible to be vaccinated, can remain as safe as possible. With pediatric hospitalizations on the rise due to COVID-19 and the medium to long-term effects of COVID-19 and the omicron variant in particular not being well known, I don't think it's too much to ask for owners to give up a few bucks for the good of society. Perhaps they could wait a year or two before buying their second luxury yacht with attached helipad so that children don't die?

Again, why should the poor take the brunt of the financial burden when it comes to dealing with the pandemic? Shouldn't we ask the rich to do so as well?

This supposition of yours, stems from the belief that the players don’t want to actually … you know …. Play.

I find that argument hollow. We are seeing a LOT of them denouncing the decision to not go to the Olympics. Where they don’t even get paid.

you think they all want a break from their livelihood and passion?

PS — I wouldn’t consider the players “the poor”. This is all a first world problem. The ones who get screwed by all of this are the fans. If that is who you are referring to as “the poor”.

I don’t want a shut down. I’d wager almost all fans feel the same way.

What the NHL does affects people who don't care about the NHL. It's not enough for the players and fans to want to play, it's a matter of what's best for society as a whole. And for some reason, I don't think having upwards of 20,000 people crammed in arenas spreading Omicron is what's best for society at this point in time. Not when pediatric hospitalizations are on the rise and infection rates are through the roof.

It's less of an NHL problem and more of a problem with capitalism (excuse the slur) as a whole, but seeing as this is an NHL forum I think it's fair to focus on the greed and evil of the NHL owners as a stand-in for the greed and evil of the mega-wealthy in general.

You know people can make their own decisions if they want to go to a game or not. If they feel like it's too big of a risk, they will likely stay at home. But if they don't they will go to a game. You are one of those people who would shut down the whole country if you could and would absolutely destroy economy with it, without thinking the repercussions that come with it.

All those vaccines were made for a reason, and that reason wasn't that people would stay jailed at home.

I think this is on the various local/State leaders to make the determination to shut down arenas, not just one business owner (The NHL) of many in and around arenas on game days.

Unfortunately, unvaccinated children in daycare do not get to choose whether their classmates' parents decide to go to a hockey game. They probably don't even know what hockey is!

Why does everything go back to COVID talk. Reopen the damn COVID thread already. People are sick of seeing borderline political posts in a hockey forum, myself included.

I feel stupid that I don't understand this, what does 50% arena capacity have to do with not playing the game? Is the NHL not willing to play a game without full capacity?

probably not, not when they can delay a little by using up the Olympic and ASG breaks if they need them….but also how do you decide who goes?

Games postponed.
Games moved.
Games cancelled.
Players removed from active rosters in mass numbers
Attendance limited or eliminated.

That all comes back to COVID. When someone says that not playing or not allow players to play is crap and COVID is crap, then.....I know its tiresome.

Really intrigued by the likely return of Kempny. If he plays well, and Mantha stays on LTIR for the rest of the RS, I could easily see them keeping Kempny as a good #7 and waiving/losing Cholo. I really don’t mind Irwin at all, but if a guy went down for any length of time you don’t want Irwin seeing gameplay with any regularity.

Cholo hasn’t been unforgivably bad, but he hasn’t impressed me either.

Asymptomatic players will likely be back after 5 days instead of 10 following recent CDC news. Still don’t know what percentage of players are actually asymptomatic though. Sounds like an even mix of guys actually getting sick vs no symptoms at all

If a general comment about the 3rd pairing then, I dont get what you are getting at with TvR. I get that people hate Schultz, but I thought TvR was generally liked. To my eyes, and thats not saying a lot, TvR has been really good with his play on the left and his penalty killing has been quality. Call my comment a defense of TvR.

Stay on target...stay on target...stay on target.
