Remember the golden rule kids!

When Barzal has an elite center like John Tavares forcing defenses to account for both the 1st and 2nd lines, it means Barzal's points are meaningless.

When Matthews has an elite center like John Tavares forcing defenses to account for both the 1st and 2nd lines, it means Matthews' points prove he is the vastly superior hockey player under all circumstances.

Outside of some hardcore homers I don't think anyone thinks that.

Overall skills for skills they are about the same. Barzal skates better, probably slightly better playmaker. Matthews is bigger, WAY better shot, overall better player. Like alot of people said around the same tier of player but 31 out of 31 GM would pick the big center who can do it all and can score goals!

Your talking to a huge barzal fan, but theres no discussion on who you pick.

Matthews was always obviously better than Barzal, but what does it really matter, Islanders got a potential franchise center in the middle of the first round, I doubt they care much.

Tavares obviously helped Barzal a lot, and guess what, he's gonna help Matthews as well. That's the power of having another franchise center on your team.

Yeah, seems like Barzal is the real deal and getting that tier of player at #16 OA is a steal.

This is a fun one!

Using rates from this season:

82 gp Barzal = 64pts
60 gp Matthews = 96pts

Therefor, Matthews 60gp > Barzal 82gp

Insecurity is a funny word. It's a hockey message board and while some may use it in this example we can talk numbers and facts. Leafs fans and Isles fans gloating over their own superstar players is great, some franchises wish they could have one of them.

You have obviously gotten quite upset over fans thinking Barzal was better as a whole last season which you have alluded to was silly to say just one season means Barzal is better. So in return, you have decided to label Matthews better after 25 games?

That is laughable considering how upset you got for people comparing them over a full season judging by this post. Once Barzal gets some line mates with him or a #2 center I would bet that he scores more points than Matthews. That skating ability is just amazing, especially when Beauvillier and Kuhnackl are not playing on a line with him.

** points also does not mean better player. This was always a dumb point of comparison

Matthews is 2 tiers above Barzal at this point in time. Barzal has some glaring flaws in his game that need rectifying before he can be in the same conversation.

Actually, many said Barzal was facing easier competition. We all just wanted to see how he compared to Matthews (who faced the hardest comp last year and likely will this year too).

Remember though, you would take 70 games of Barzal over 60 of Matthews! Even if it means lesser defensive play, an 80% drop in goals and almost half the ppg :)

If Barzal was a Leaf, there would also be threads on how goals dontd matter.

We have Marner who's a better playmaker than Barzal, I don't think anyone's saying goals don't matter for him, most of us have been saying he needs to pick it up and shoot more.

Why weren't Isles fans using this logic last season to pick Matthews over Barzal then?

Barzal is the type of player who can pick up 10-15 points in 3 games ... at which point the discussion will shift to the fact that if you take those 3 games away, he's basically a 60 point player.

It really depends what the rest of your team looks like - if you have playmakers you take the sniper and visa versa - Isles need a trigger man to ride shotgun to Barzal in order to see him flourish

For being a fan of a team that last won when Lyndon Johnson was the American president you sure are smug and arrogant.
Pot meet kettle. Stop acting like a 25 game sample size has made your piss poor organization relevant

I mean it’s not like Matthews wasn’t doing it before Tavares came. Awful post and awful analogy.

Matthews excels at 5v5 play. One of if not the best in the league where as Barzal struggles 5v5. Not close at all tbh

Last season at 5V5, Barzal had 54 points and Tavares had 39. How exactly does Barzal struggle at 5V5, and what does it say about Tavares when a guy who struggles at 5V5 outproduced him by 15 points?

Oh, what a shocker this thread turned out to be.

Reminds me of Skjei > Rielly, Boeser > Marner, Gagner > Kadri, Fiala > Nylander, Petterson > Matthews, Hudon > Kapanen, and on and on and on and on and on.

Leaf fans are just biased.
Don't forget McDavid+Pulju vs Matthews + Marner!
