Yeah but he still wasn't a top 4 D, he got points , but in the playoffs and in tight games he was non existent, especially in the playoffs. Rielly got injured and Barrie was not ready to play big minutes.

I guess that's not what the Leafs needed but I'm sure his advanced stats improved under Keefe, but he was still not very good IMO. I wouldn't even take him for a minimum contract on the Leafs tbh.
And clearly whatever happened in TO isn't the norm for Barrie as he has been more than capable playing big minutes in CO and EDM.

Okay? Does putting other people down make you feel better? Pathetic existence

Rielly is terrible this year, Brodie is better.

Barrie was not misused he was objectively terrible despite Keefe giving him ample opportunity.

The only thing right with your post is your inflated ego, BTW taking a step back in IQ and stagnating as a player makes perfect sense, don't know what I said or did to you for that response, maybe not alot going on in your life eh Bud?

I do hope you are not under the impression we just post here and people ignore our mistakes and false statements. We debate and discuss and poke holes in each others arguments. It is one way to refine an argument and the crafting there of but it takes a thick skin.

I did not put you down, I put your post down. It is not a personal attack. I would avoid those if I were you. I would not take it so personally, people poke holes in posts here all time. I did not mean to upset you.

Barrie was deployed on the 2nd powerplay unit unless Rielly was down with injury for the first 23 games under Babcock. Keefe arrived and he went to a 55 point pace. So yeah he was used incorrectly until the coaching change.

Now the word stagnate:
verb (used without object), stag·nat·ed, stag·nat·ing.

to cease to run or flow, as water, air, etc.
to be or become stale or foul from standing, as a pool of water.
to stop developing, growing, progressing, or advancing:

It basically means to not change, regressing implies change through decline. Yes Rielly is having a rough season and I agree Brodie is playing better but I think we'll see Rielly bounce back.

I hope Rielly bounces back too.

It does seem like a personal attack when you give that backhanded comment "most sane people".

I think most Leafs fans will tell you he was still very bad under Keefe and almost nonexistent in the playoffs and in tough games. That PP1 point is weak because the Leafs PP did not need any help scoring goals, I thought Barrie was too trigger happy on the powerplay. You can't hang your hat on being a PP qb and nothing else, which is what Barrie was as a defenseman for the leafs. He was just so terrible at winning puck battles and retrieving the puck in his own zone

Generally the book on Barrie has been top PP talent, 3rd pairing defense. Few good teams would deploy him as a top 4 which is why both Toronto and Colorado moved on from him in hopes of getting better. Edmonton was starved for offense on the back end so he was a natural fit for them. I can't speak to his 5on5 play this year or his defensive play in general but I know it's not the toughest group to get a top 4 spot with. Maybe he's improved his game or maybe their system suits him better, I can't say. It's nice Oiler fans are so happy with him.

Can we shutdown this post? Barrie and Brodie are both good depending on a team's need.

Barrie is better offensively and Brodie is not nearly as good, but better defensively. One is a offensive specialist and one is a defensive. Guys like Barrie also harder to come by.

This is not really true. Barrie was actually not overly successful on the pp until more recently. He's always been more of a high-end 5 vs 5 producer. No one would confuse him with a defensive defenseman but to suggest that the bok on him has always been as a pp specialist is simply wrong.

I'll be happy to agree with you if you can prove it. Might check this out, it has some nice quotes: Working the powerplay - The Copper & Blue (coppernblue.com)

In 2017/18, Barrie led all NHL defencemen in powerplay ice time per game with 3.72 minutes, playing 60.2% of Colorado’s total powerplay time. The next season in 2018/19, Barrie again led the league, this time averaging 4.04 minutes per game, and seeing a bump in his proportion of the teams total powerplay time, reaching 66.8%.

I could be missing something?

Here's Barries rankings in ES scoring for defenseman since he became an NHL regular in 13/14:

13/14: 12th(in 68 games)
14/15: 3rd
15/16: T-10th
16/17: T-11th
17/18: T-13th
18/19: T-11th
19/20: T-11th
20/21: T-4th

He's been one of the better ES producers from the backend his entire career and has recently become a much better PPQB. To start his career he wasn't great on the PP but the last 3 years or so is when he's become a real threat there.

I'm not going to dispute his offensive gifts, that has never really been in doubt . The real question is about whether his D is top 4 worthy or not. Oiler fans seem to think he is this year which I guess is all that matters.

He's fine in a second pairing role defensively. But like a lot of very good offensive defensemen he is probably better if he is paired with a guy who complements his style. Right now he is playing on teh Oilers top pairing with Nurse, who is having a great year. The two have been fine in that role. The Oilers have won 9 of 11 and probably should have won at least one if not both of the games they lost. Given that injuries have played havoc with the bottom two pairings over that period it would be hard to argue that Barrie cannot function at ES beyond a third pairing role.

As for my claim about Barrie not being viewed as a pp specialist over his career the Abusement Park has addressed this.

My sense is that most Oiler fans have a fairly realistic idea of what Barrie brings to the table. He's been a frequent topic as far as possible trades for years. His gifts and his warts have be discussed many times over the years. And I'd say right now he is probably playing about how most would have expected if you ignore his play last year in Torornto.

So what type of contract are Oiler fans now willing to offer Barrie?

4-5 years with $4.5-5M max.

He truly does add a dimension we desperately needed. He looks good with Nurse as well, Nurse has been a strong 5 v 5 producer for the last 3+ years. Plus Nurse is a defensive horse, his efforts on the PK really exemplify that. Nurse-Barrie is probably the best pairing we’ve had in a long time.

I’m not saying Barrie is a perfect player, because he’s not, but he really brings an element we’ve needed for a decade plus. Barrie looks comfortable and confident with the Oilers.

He took less money to play for the Oilers and seems to be really well liked in the locker room. I think he’d take a bit less to stay with the Oilers.

He took less, in the hopes of getting more long term.

He bet on himself in the ideal situation to put up points. He'll never have a better chance to cash in, and at 30 years of age, probably his last chance as well.

And good for him, he’s played well and if he’s seeking a major payday it likely won’t be with us.

However, if he’s willing to take a reasonable deal with term, then he’ll find a home longer term here.

You have to remember too, Barrie comes from money too. I think for guys like him maybe the fit he has with Edmonton matters a lot as well.

Time will tell, I’ll tell you what even if he signs elsewhere we won’t be slagging him. He’s playing good hockey for us and has formed the best pairing we’ve had in a long, long time with Nurse.

As a Leafs fan who had to suffer through shite defensive teams for over a decade I can assure you this isn’t true, quite the opposite actually. And you’re a Canucks fan for goodness sake’s, you’d think watching your teams defence play this season you’d know that as well.

What? lol

I am a huge fan of Barrie and defended him with the Leafs because under Keefe he played at 55 point pace etc and played well.

But guys like that are not easier to find than Brodie, Brodie is an actual top pairing Dman(I think he's a high end #3 low end #2). Those are much, much harder to find than Barrie types.

Just my two cents.

Toronto needed someone who could help us defensively. I was going to come in here and talk about how bad Brodie has been defensively, but I mean they are paying the guy 2.5m and he has been a huge boost to their D core offensively.

I still take Brodie, because we need defenders who can defend, but I feel like my criticism of Barrie is kind of fading. Edmonton is winning games, so it's hard to put the screws to anybody on that team right now.
