I'm just gonna leave this here for no particular reason...

That’s a nice goal by Nylander, but not sure why it’s in a Brodie v Barrie thread. Or is it not a nice goal by Nylander and more of a mistake by Barrie?

Barrie can't defend, he just stands there like an idiot in front of his goalie. The move was nice but mostly due to Bear not knowing how to defend and Barrie being to deep.

Overall Barrie is a worse version of Leafs Jake Gardiner. One of the most horrendous defensive players in the league.

Stupid bump but this poll should have been closed due to lopsidedness minutes after its creation. It's not close at all

^ And that's just from tonight. There's at least half a dozen more plays of Brodie shutting down McDavid and Draisaitl over the past three games.

If I'm picking a defenseman, I'm picking one that can effectively shut down two Hart and Art Ross trophy winners. Y'all can have the powerplay specialist who disappears in tight games if you want.

And to think you used to think Gardiner was a #2/3 when he was with the leafs

He was at his best. Gardiner was a solid #3D who we didnt offer the right supporting player to play alongside.

Barrie (now cant comment on him from 2011-2019) is a #4D who really has defensive issues. His offense seems to be back but he still has terrible positioning and is soft as they come on the boards.

Brodie is a high end 3D who while not offensively skilled has incredible defensive abilities and good skating and positional play. Brodie just thinks the game better than Barrie in the defensive zone, with Barrie to uncertain.

Brodie doesn't need to put 50 points for the leafs. We needed a guy who could play alongside our 1D in Rielly and he has been just that.

Gardiner is way, way better defensively than Barrie, (and Morgan Rielly). He got shit on for mistakes that he rarely made. He tilted the ice for basically the entirety of his Leaf career

Thanks for the reply. The reason I asked that question before the season wasn't a knock on Giordano but just the observation that he wasn't a guy who was in Norris discussions year after year but tended to get the votes when he was with Brodie, which for me leads me to question how much his success is a product of Brodie. Again, not that Brodie "carries" him but that he plays a very complementary game. For me that kind of player is gold.

Many Flames fans actually commented that Brodie was the more effective player this past season, when the acquisition was made.

Probably nitpicking, but I think Brodie's closer to a #2D. Not defensively elite enough to be a #1D nor offensively elite enough to be a #1D, but good enough at both to fall into that #2D category.

I think he is exactly a 2D which is fantastic. Not every D can be a legit number 1, and honestly there are not many in the league (legit and not just because the team makes them a number 1)

Alright-if Brodie is not a #1, and Rielly isn't great, and no one else is great either, Muzzin and Holl are 2/3s.
You should head over to the Keefe thread and wrap up the Adams for him. The team, not just the corps are playing
great D overall.

What?

I have Morgan ahead of him and Brodie at number 2 which is FANTASTIC. The rest of the D core is great and the 3rd pair is one of the more solid pairs period.

I think you may have thought I was insulting Brodie or the Leafs lol
