For sure and I agree 100%. I just hate that people, even some here, consider 2012 to 2019, his decline or "down" years.

Ovechkin is a top five player in the NHL and if people don't understand that they don't understand what the absolute hardest part of the playing in the NHL is. And he is/was the undisputed best player at that for 14 plus seasons.

Hint: It's not being able to hold the puck against the boards for four seconds or making a pass across to a dman who passes again to someone who scores the goal.

Well it's easy for them to judge him at his worst and ignore him at his best

Pretty crazy that Wayne scored almost twice as many of his career goals from 3+ goal games. Not sure if there's anything to take away from this, other than possibly assuming that it was much easier for Wayne to run away and take advantage of a good game, whereas Ovi has been consistently chucking away with goals.

I think part of the takeaway is, Wayne got to play against teams and defensemen and goalies, especially right after the WHA merger, that didn't belong in the NHL at all, and he abused them, a lot.

Ovi has played his whole career in an era where scoring was MUCH harder than it was when Wayne played.

he took advantage not only of a good game but also a high scoring era. the bulk of his stats were archived in his 20s... the most amount of his hattricks were scored in the 80s for sure.
