Friedman is pumping the tires for Toronto to become sellers and move Tyson Barrie.

I wouldn't want Barrie. Allways thought he was a safety hazard when he was with the Avs. He's just another skilled offensive defenseman who brings little else to the table . Whoever pays Barrie in the offseason is guaranteed to sign a terrible contract. His new contract will very much be like Shattenkirk was with the Rangers. Hell probably worse.

Athanasiou is such an enigma of a player . He can either be great or a bucket of suck . Great talent but i don't think the Redwings really want to trade him for cheap and he's still RFA at the end of the year. I don't see it . Thornton is possible but thats Thorntons call .

Agreed. I'm not sure what you would get with Athanasiou. I'm not sure he's the 30 goal guy he was last season but he's electric for sure. That +/- sure is an eye waterer lol.

Josh Anderson I am definitely intrigued by, but his injury combined with a really bad season so far is cause for concern. And I agree with Friedman that it would make for a difficult contract negotiation.

Oh I just thought it was interesting that he was advocating for Toronto to become sellers. There's not really a spot on this team for Barrie right now.

I do think it would be possible to add another D ... possible not a need. That said, I think it would make more sense for a guy who is a solid all around defender as opposed to a PP specialist. IMO ... Dallas doesn't really have space on the PP for another D, and if they did .... Johns is the obvious choice probably with that bomb of a shot. I think they're good though sticking with Klingberg and Heiskanen with 4 other forwards.

Personally ... Demelo would have made some sense but that ship has sailed. Unlike with Janmark at forward, at least IMO, you would trade one of your extra D to accommodate adding a D. I mean ... Marco Scandella just got a 2nd +. I am not saying it's something Nill would do, but you could flip Polak lets say for assets that you could then flip for another D.

Now on paper that makes sense ... and Demelo probably would have been my target ... but just looking at what is left out there I'm not entirely certain that other player who wouldn't not be extremely expensive and is also better than Sekera is still there. In that scenario though ... Nill would get to keep 8 D like he wants. Like I said ... I don't think it's a great need, but it could be an affordable luxury if you could make it work.

Maybe a guy like Hutton? I'm sure he would be around a 3rd if Demelo was, and I think you'd at minimum get a 3rd for Polak. He's proven capable of playing a bigger role if needed (like Oleksiak has at times this year), but he's better suited for 3rd pair just like Oleksiak as well.

I don't know ... I just think it's not a stretch to think you improve the team without losing major assets. Hutton, Sekera, and Fedun just feels like stronger depth than Sekera, Polak, and Fedun.

I don’t think we need a defender.

Dubas won’t trade Barrie because doing so would probably be a death sentence from the fan outrage alone.

More speculation, this time from TSN, about Thornton and Dallas:

DALLAS STARS: GM Jim Nill is on record as saying he is “definitely fine and encouraged by our team if we stand pat.” Tampa Bay is the only team with a better record since the Stars started 1-7-1. They’re 33-12-5 since and have allowed the fewest goals in the NHL. They’re going to be a stingy out in the playoffs. Without second- and third-round picks, Nill is more interested in a hockey trade. Adding scoring would be the goal, but Nill told reporters he thinks his top-end (read: highest-paid) forwards have “more to give.” There are rumblings Joe Thornton would like to take a run at a Cup and stay in the West. Would Jumbo Joe be interested in reuniting with Little Joe in Joe Pavelski? Someone like Thornton would seem to make a lot of sense.

I think they like Polak too much to move him. They still have the thought of not having Oleksiak/Johns against St. Louis last year in their head, they want those big bodies and Polak brings that kind of depth should one of them get injured.

Ennis/Namestnikov/Athanasiou/Grant are guys I think we could have some interest in that are affordable, if they get desperate to add some depth maybe a Simmonds/Fast.

Thornton is intriguing as well, he seems like an exact player Nill would add, and although he is not even close to what he used to be, I think he could bring a ton of value to the team. He's not my first choice but I would take him over nothing.

Just to continue the Thornton thread, in Shapiro's who said no piece, he said Thornton to Dallas made sense for a 5th round pick. I personally would be shocked if that was all it would take. That said, I do think he might be right that the return would be lower than expected because of Thronton's NMC, and the SJ GM basically saying if anything happens with Joe, he's in the driver's seat.

Friedman thinks Dallas is looking for speed and scoring. He wonders if Dallas is the team that takes a shot at Andreas Athanasiou.

Says the difficulty with adding him is his big personality. You need a good leadership group. Friedman thinks though that Dallas could use a burner with finish.

Friedman also added that he sees Joe Thornton as a possibility here.

I’d be pissed if we traded for AA. He’s fast and he can score, but he is brutal defensively. Doesn’t matter if he pots 30 for us if he’s responsible for 40 going in our net.

I guess I wouldn’t mind Jumbo, haven’t watched him much this year, but his passing would definitely help. Guess he’d be similar to what Spezza’s role was last season

Thornton for Janmark? Is that an even-value trade? I honestly have no idea. I just don't want Nill to give up any picks.

I’m good with Thornton for a 5th, although I don’t know where he’d fit in. Who comes out? Who does he cycle in with?

If we had a spot, sure, but otherwise I see him subbing in for any of our 12 forwards as a net loss.

That's the weird thing about this team, we want to upgrade but we really don't have any spots for new players. Every forward plays the system to a tee so replacing them with someone could backfire.

Yeah thats something i struggle with. Where does Thornton slot in ? He ain't no spring chicken anymore and we already have quite a few older guys so i wouldn't sub out a good skater. The only guy would be Perry i'm ok with and isn't that kind of a wash ?

My bigger issue with him is next year honestly. He's going to cost quite a bit to acquire, and he's going to take a spot blocking a young guy.

Now that said, I do ultimately think one of Dickinson or Faksa will be gone next season, and it will probably be Faksa. The cap is too close, and he makes the most sense because he can be replaced by Dickinson ($1.5 million cap hit), and I personally don't view him as a downgrade. The $4 or so million that Faksa will likely make next year could possibly go to another scoring winger. The other reason I think you can feel comfortable moving Faksa next season is Gardner and Dellandrea. I'm assuming one of them will take over the Dickinson role next season.

I just don't know that I want Athanasiou to be the guy to take Faksa's salary next season.

Yeah that's kind of my thoughts as well, who sits if someone is brought in. Guys like Ennis aren't better than anyone we currently have, you could argue Cogliano, but they play very different roles and Ennis isn't going to be getting the PP time he gets in Ottawa so can he perform the same in Dallas. Teams like Ottawa & San Jose arent going to trade for a UFA like Janmark. I really think you'd have to trade someone like Dickinson who has value to a rebuilding team for an upgrade, especially since can have someone like Dellandrea coming in next year to replace him.

You stuck him with burners who can finish. And you would enjoy the show. Molasses-show doesn't need to carry the puck with those two going full throttle. Just be the setup guy to feed them breakaways, odd man rushes and one timers. Mix it with your preference of Janny or Perry. Personally not a huge fan of Janmark's and would be more than fine with him sitting out games, but it's 50/50 and doesn't really matter to me.

Hintz - Thornton - Gurianov
Benn - Seguin - Pavelski
Janmark - Dickinson - Radulov
Cogliano - Faksa - Comeau

Good point it’s gonna be a tight summer for RFA’s. I’m hoping that we’ll have enough space to bring back everyone and stick Dickinson on Faksa’s left wing and move Cogs down to the 4th line.

I don't see how anyone struggles with who should come out.
Cogliano. Weakest link in the forward core
He's the weak link.
Brings next to nothing offensively, nothing especially great defensively. Just skates kind of fast.

He is not coming out of the lineup . There is no point even discussing this. There is one thing that has never changed when the all 3 have been healthy and thats the FCC line.

Of course he's not going to, but the least played forward, with the least amount of utility is who should come out of the lineup, but he's got dirt or performs "favors" for somebody so he gets to stay in the NHL and in the lineup for now.

Again is the dual nature of conversations we have to have about the Dallas Stars. We can talk about purely what we or someone else wants, but that's not realistic. Having an eye on what the organization has demonstrated is a must or we're just talking fantasy hockey. There's always going to be an element of both.
