isn't he restricted, someone might offer sheet him thats about it, he cant walk for nothing.
You don’t have to give him a qualifying offer. He becomes UFA.

Horrible value for Kapanen. Gauthier is a prospect who hasnt proven anything. If kap is going to the canes then pesce has to be coming back.
Zaitsev@50+Kapanen
Pesce+Sabres 2nd
Pesce doesn't fit in the cap... Carolina likely has no interest in Zaitsev.
Trading Zaitsev is a pipe dream among this fanbase... not happening.
Edit: If value is low, upgrade the draft picks.
Z is tradeable. Leafs will have to give up a lot to get somebody to take him or will have to take a bad contract back.

sign Marner to a bridge deal
We could get creative and sign Marner to a 1x year deal. Get us past the Marleau hurdle.
Muzzin, Dermott and possibly Johnsson/Kapanen will be dipping into that.
Are you trying to win a cup? Trading a franchise player would be a terrible choice. Try other ways. Zaitsev 50% retention or a buy out if need be. Marleau 50%Renton should be tradable if he waives. Nylander should be dealt before any thoughts of trading marner.Alright, let's just get rid of Marner then. Problem solved.

Instead of picks you deal directly for prospects. That will minimize the risk and keep the pipeline flowing.Kadri for a first. Zaitsev for a 2nd. Those type of deals.
They would if the right deal came along.Carolina likely has no interest in Zaitsev.

So is 11.6 for Matthews, yet here we areI'd rather sit Marner for the year then give him 10.6 million. That's a ridiculous number.
Came here to say nice username. So is 11.6 for Matthews, yet here we are
Problem with that is Marleau will likely refuse to waive his NMC . He loves it here and has 2 young kids in school in TorontoCame here to say nice username.
Will also add - Trade Zaitsev, bridge Kapanen & Johnsson for 2 years, everyone fits, even with Mitch at 11.
Worst case scenario Marleau goes to whoever is willing to take him at whatever cap# you need to retain next year to fit those guys in.
We need to stop worrying about fitting in ELITE players, it will happen come hell or high water.
How does that work?Brown HAS to be traded. A 4th line of Bracco-Gauthier-Moore would be solid and cheap.
Really hoping the leafs pull off the Marleau trade, buy out and re-sign (similar to what the Caps did with Orpik)
Except that Babcock loves the fellow Saskatchewaner. So lets pretend he digs in and says "Nope, NMC, not leaving"
And Babcock says "Fine. Don't leave. But also don't plan on playing because we don't have room for you"
Is he going to dig in or try and find a mutual out to help both sides?
He may control his trade status. But we control if he ever steps on the ice with this team again.
That "hammer" goes both ways. I don't see Marleau as the type of guy willing to dig in over $1.25 mil when he can work his way around it and potentially even still end up back in Toronto on a lower cap hit and be made whole financially.
No such thing as a team option in the NHL is there?Would we not have been better off to pay him more for a 2 years contract when we had AAV and then taken a team option for a 3rd year
Didn’t he sign with the Leafs because he wants to win a cup? Why would he give that up to go to Arizona. He can retire wherever he wants to anyway after his contract expires. Why wouldn't he? Arizona is a much nicer place to retire then Toronto. He can't help it if they buy him out making him UFA.
You need proof of a conspiracy to prove it.
Without a paper trail, as the Orpik situation proved, there's almost nothing anyone can do about it until they close the loophole in the next CBA.
