i would love it if we just went all defence this draft, every pick, unless of course some standout centre was available at 19.

load up on defence this year and next and hope something emerges

It all really depends on whos remaining on the board.

I've also always wondered about trading back, do teams generally share who they plan on picking? I can't imagine they do, like when we traded back 2 years ago did we know no other team was going to pick Mantha? Or did we just gamble that he was still going to be there.

I think they have tiers of players they would like to take, so I'm assuming they would have been happy taking whoever was left in their tier when it was their turn to pick.

All-Defensive Draft for first 4 rounds (My dream scenario)

First 4 rounds:

#21 (1st) - Chabot/Kylington*
#51 (2nd) Meloche/Dunn*
#73 (3rd) - Thomas Schmemitsch
#110 (4th) - Caleb Jones

*Traded #19 pick to BUF for #21 and #51

Roy or Juulsen with either of first 2 picks would be awesome too.

Well, well... look at that.

Keeping #19 and adding #21 could be awesome too. Could Pulkkinen net a #21 pick?

I wouldn't mind Ethan Bear in the 3rd round, but otherwise seems like a solid list.

That's interesting, I would consider that personally.

If the organization deems him redundant, Buffalo is looking to add talent on the wings, and there's no guarantee that anyone drafted in that range will score at the rate he is in the AHL (thus projecting favorably to the NHL). We could take two gambles on defensemen with high upside in the span of three picks.

IIRC when we traded back with SJ two years ago we had 2-3 players on the same tier as Mantha therefore we would be guaranteed at least one of them. I think teams probably have tiers and draft based on that (bpa) or needs.

I wouldn't mind something like for defenseman but shouldn't be reaching just doing BPA
1st round - Kylington, Roy, Chabot
3rd round - Wotherspoon, Bear

That's what I was thinking too. I guess it depends on how Buffalo views Pulkinnen. I'm actually curious if we could acquire the 21st and flip it along with the 19th to move up. I wonder where that would get us. Though I suppose a chance at landing both Kylington and Roy is equally enticing.

Isn't moving Pulkkinen for the 21st pick robbing Peter to pay Paul?

I don't understand that, either. You're trading a player that's further along in his development for a low first. The chances of a pick at that point turning into a player that has pulks potential is extremely slim.

No, because our forward depth far outweighs out defensive depth, and we could add a really good defenseman at #21.

That is years from helping this team. If we are shipping out Pulkkinen it better be as part of a package for a legit Top 4 guy.

Not interested in trading Pulkkinen for a lottery ticket.

I will say again I would eagerly dangle this years first or next years first with him for a NHL D-man.

The idea that we should draft 6 D-man this year and it would answer what is going on with our big club is out to lunch. None of those guys are coming quickly, we need that answer sorted quicker than what this draft will yield in my opinion.

Less out to lunch than banking on Holland coming up with the answer via free agency or trade, in my opinion.

I think it would be a mistake to trade Pulkkinen without giving him a fair shot as a top 9 forward, with 2nd PP minutes. And I don't mean put him there for 4 games, and if he doesn't produce, demote him. I mean put him there next season from the get go, give him 13+ minutes per game and see what he can do with it.

I have no doubt in my mind Pulkkinen can be a 20+ goal NHL scorer as soon as next season, if given a proper chance. He is tearing the AHL to threads, I know the players are a step slower, but still the A is a very good league, and he has been the most dominant scorer in that league in the last year and a half.

Also, the fact that Blash is witnessing his domination of the A first hand should help Pulkkinen's case to be given a fair chance and not be traded. I would assume Holland with touch base with Blash before pulling the trigger on any deal involving him, and I would expect Blash to want to keep Pulkkinen around.

Perhaps. I think it depends on your perception of Pulkinnen, who I'm still not convinced will be better than a 3rd line power play specialist. Also, out of all the forward prospects that are worth anything, he's probably the guy I'd be least uncomfortable with losing. On the other hand, our lack of depth on defense is a massive concern. Sproul is flirting with bust status, and neither Ouellet or Marchenko have been as impressive as we thought they were last year. More importantly, I don't hate Holland, but even I can see he rarely trades for anything substantial anymore, and quite frankly our pro scouting has been kind of hit or miss lately as well. I guess this makes me willing to role the dice. Also, like I said before, if we were able to acquire that pick, I think I'd like us to use both to move up and acquire someone like Provorov or Werenski. Again, I know it's not necessarily a realistic scenario, but a man can dream.

Though now that I've said all this, maybe one of our d prospects could land us that 21st pick. Jensen or Sproul + something else maybe?

So now we enter the draft with two thirds and no second, right?

No, we have one third.

2015 Red Wings draft picks (maybe sticky this?)

1st round: 19th overall

2nd round: None (traded for E. Cole)

3rd round: 73rd overall (cond. pick from Dallas)

4th round: 110th overall

5th round: 140th overall

6th round: 170th overall

7th round: 200th overall
