I remember when we signed him the first time to the 6 year deal and a lot of people said it was horrible. It turned out to be solid and he had an awesome 8 years here is Jersey. It was sad to see him decline so much last season.

I always stuck up for him on his first contract. That said, I had a bad feeling about re signing him for 3 years. Even a year before he was ever even re signed.
The last time I can remember the board getting exactly what they want was right before the 2010-2011 season.
Not me. I NEVER wanted John MacLean as head coach.
More like "taking out the TRASH".

Good Riddance to Space Junk.

The current Zubrus was more like bone dust floating around in space.

You guys are getting awfully sympathetic lately. Zubrus was never worth the money he was paid and sucked for a good 2 seasons. Good riddance.

He wasn't overpaid AT ALL on his first contract.

He produced right around 0.5 PPG for his first 6 seasons as a Devil.

It wasn't until his last 2 seasons that he started to suck. After he signed that last contract. And honestly he was fairly respectable in 13-14 when compared to how awful he was last season.

Nobody still wants him around as a forward. We're just wishing him well in the future and appreciating the good that he did bring at one point as a player. Why dwell on the negative about him when he's gone? He did us some good and now he's stopped doing us harm.

0.47 or 0.45 PPG (whatever it was) is VERY good value for $3.4 million per year.

He averaged close to a half a point per game in those 6 years. His only meh season was the MacLean year, everyone on the team wasn't good that year. And I still think he was 4th on the team in points that year.

The problem was that his paycut on his next contract was only $300k or so less per year. And then his production plummeted to astronomically horrible levels.

I get sentimental about guys that helped us win cups. Not players that were here for our dark days. Sorry just not my style

I wouldn't say I'm sentimental about Zubrus. It's not like he's a favorite player of mine in Devils' history, but he seems like a good fellow, so now that he's gone I'd rather not speak ill of him if I can help it.

I guess we have something in common then.

This was what I often said when showing my disgust at the thought of having Zubrus next season.

''We've said goodbye to players like Marty, people (including me) wanted him off the team at any cost after last season. People said way worse about him than anyone is about Zubrus right now, other than me. People HATED Pandolfo at the end of his tenure here. A lot of people were even fed up with Dano at the very end here. So forgive me for not showing any sympathy to Zubrus and wanting him far away'' I said something like that a month or two ago.

But I guess at this point, I'll take a page out of FJG's book. No need to dwell on the negative now that he's gone.

Regardless of how incredibly much I couldn't stand his last two years here, I think it's absolutely false to say he was overpaid on his first contract with us. The one from 07-13. Even my friend who HATED Zubrus his entire tenure and during the first contract, always maintained that his contract wasn't a problem and would always admit that his salary was fair and that he wasn't overpaid. I remember him complaining that he thought the length was too long a few times, not the salary though. I think he did want Zubrus shipped off before Rolston too.

And as much as I personally couldn't stand Zubrus the last two years and was just completely disgusted with him, the last two coaching staff's didn't do him any favors by FORCING him to play in the top 6 every night.

Moreso Oates than DeBoer, because DeBoer actually did demote him to the 4th line around the 20 game mark. And he even kept him there until injuries started to happen.

Then Oates got here, and he was playing on the power play, always in the top 6. It was almost like Oates was living under the rock the last 3 years or thought that he was back in 2012 when he was last here, with the way he overplayed Zubrus.

At the same time though, I did have this theory that Zubrus (Tootoo also) was getting all these minutes and PP time just because of how much they had soured on Havlat and Ryder. Two guys who would have gotten that ice time and PP time. It seemed they were willing to shun and alienate Ryder and Havlat because it was guaranteed that neither would be returning in 2015-2016. At the time, Lou and company were probably operating under the assumption that Zubrus would be back the next season.

And while I do think the chances would have been very low that he was bought out if Lou was still GM, I wouldn't have completely discounted it. Lou did kick Colon White out of here (an even more joyous day for me) a few years back.

Another thing that this comes down to is, we have too many guys that shouldn't be played above the 4th line in ideal situation's.

Tootoo and Gionta shouldn't be anywhere near the top 9 in a healthy lineup. Even if it worked last year for Tootoo. Ruutu is probably a 4th liner, though I think he could be a 3rd liner if we needed him to. He was stiffed by both coaching staff's last year.

Then we've got too many guys that are unknowns right now. Matteau and Boucher. Josefson looked good at times after DeBoer was sacked and he absolutely NEEDS to be in the lineup just because of his shootout ability, though I'm still not sure he'll be very successful outside of a 4th line center/winger and PK/shootout specialist.

With Zubrus on the team this upcoming season, there's a good chance we'd have guys who should be on the 4th line playing in the top 9 somewhere.

what a completely ridiculous attitude to have.

i agree it is ridiculous……it is possible to be sentimental of all sorts of players …..cup or not.

that said….we need a zubs statue in championship plaza to remember his great skill of 'pumping up the locker room' circa era dark days…..it will look like this hoisting
