That Brodeur finished 5th in Hart voting in 2000-01 is puzzling.

His team led the league in goals for and had the best shot differential in the league.

Brodeur's save percentage was only slightly higher than the league average.

Was he really that valuable to this team that year?

Edit: Nevermind the following angry rant. I can't read.

Without even checking, I'm sure he led the league in goals for because he led the league in minutes played by a wide margin. A valuable goalie tends to get lots of minutes, you know?

But please, go ahead and use statistics 8 years after the fact to argue against the opinions of those who, you know, actually watched the games.

2001 was obviously Sakic first, then Lemieux and Jagr, then everyone else.

I think you misunderstood him Devil.
He said "His team lead the league in goals for"

Meaning the devils were the highest scoring team in the league that year(By a pretty good margin over the other 100+ point teams). I think he was implying that the devils had exceptional depth at every position with 3 solid scoring lines + one of the best shutdown lines in the league, terrific defense and Brodeur.

In retrospect, at the time, they seemed to penalize goalies for playing on high scoring teams at the time. Hasek had a fantastic season in 2001-02(65GP, 41W, 15L, 8T, 2.17GAA, 91.5% 5 SO), but did not get many Vezina votes, etc

I think that is what the poster was getting at.

Oh yes. My 3AM reading comprehension apparently isn't what it used to be. I think it was a case of the 2000-01 Devils being an incredible team and the voters wanting to give someone Hart Credit. I noticed Brodeur, Stevens, and Elias all getting a small but significant number of votes.

As for Hasek in 2001-02, his numbers took a big dip when he moved to Detroit (other than wins obviously). He suffered from what Brodeur suffered from earlier in his career - being a a great team where he didn't need to be great.

i said this in the stickied thread in the main forum, but it bears saying again. pretty disgraceful on the voters' parts how close weber came to being a second team all-star. and this is coming from someone who likes weber.

 @ Crosby getting the 2nd place vote for the Lady Byng.

And how the hell Ovie got so many 1st place votes for the Hart. It should have been close as hell. He wasn't clearly better then Malkin, Datsyuk, or even Mason and Parise.

Disgraceful is how little respect Duncan Keith gets.

He should have been 4th overall for the last 2nd team spot, not Boyle

Ovie was a clear cut Hart winner to me this year.

Him taking so many first place votes has nothing to do with how "close" the voters thought they were. Merely that everyone thought Ovechkin was just a little bit better, so they gave him the 1st place vote

Why? He was arguably the player most valuable to his teams success.

The guy made his season off a great December. From January to April he posted a .904 SV% and the Blue Jackets got below average goaltending. It'd be a different story if his overall play over the season was a higher level than most other goalie but it wasn't.

When you consider the type of defense Columbus plays (call it the Pascal Leclair effect) there's no chance in my mind that he was the fourth most valuable player in the league this year.

That's not to say he's not a good young player with a bright future but a month and a half of outstanding play to me isn't enough to be the fourth most valuable player in the league.

It's similar to how Shea Weber came so close to being a 2nd team all star - an outstanding run early in the season got the writers' attention, then they were too lazy to notice him falling back to Earth.

- Datsyuk squeezes by Richards by 3 points for the Selke.

- Ovechkin gets 130 of 132 votes for 1st team All-Star

- Would have expected Quenneville to get more Adams votes

- Nicklas Backstrom gets a 1st place vote for Selke...really?

Had these exact same votes been awarded under the pre-1996 format of 5-3-1, Richards would've won the Selke over Datsyuk 437-427. There's been a few times where the winner would've been different under the old system (Bourque instead of Chelios for the '96 Norris, Jagr instead of Pronger for the 2000 Hart).

Two writers not having Ovechkin among their top 3 LWs is a little odd. One of them voted for him at RW instead, not sure why the other one missed him completely.

I still hate the points system. why does a guy who got a first place votes get 10X as many points as a guy who got a 5th place vote? Why does the 3rd place guy get 5X as many points as the 5th place guy?

Who did the voters like better? A guy who was 0-0-3-1-1 with 19 points? Or a guy with 0-0-0-2-8? He showed up on twice as many ballots and has just 14 points.

Why couldnt hasek be the runner up to sakic? He recorded 11 shutouts, played 67 games and had a 92.1 save%. Hasek was far more valuable to the sabres than Jagr or Lemieux were to Pittsburgh. Mario didnt get much hart support in 1990 or 1992, yet hes the runner up in 2001 despite missing 3 months, nice logic in voting. In 1992 he played more games and won the scoring title, yet recieves fewer votes.
