This market? They'll drive him from the airport. Myself included.
Dirtbags for it if so. Think getting a decent piece is worth kids looking at Voynov as a potential role model who beat his wife with no repercussions? Lmao.

If another team offers him a 3-4 year deal at like 4 million he’d accept that over a one year deal from toronto.

This is probably Bozak last chance at a multi year deal to make some real money.

He is settled here and 1 more year wouldn't kill him
Yeah, I'd be very surprised if that's his thinking.
I agree he would love to stay but he not many players, especially Bozak types, are going to turn down multi years if they are offered and someone will offer it.

So, I'm going to ignore Nylander for the time being because I don't want to jump on the "Trade Nylander for a RHD" bandwagon, but I want to throw this out there:

Trade Gardiner for a RHD.

I like Gardiner, I think he's a decent defensemen who makes mistakes and when he makes them bad things always happen. But Rielly is our top LHD and will be for a long time, in my estimation.

We've seen the emergence of Dermott and what he can do, perhaps he can slot in as our #2 LHD as early as next season.

That leaves RHD...

Assuming everyone out there thinks Gardiner is a #2 LHD, and I think on most teams he is, let's assume he can bring back a #2 RHD or we can package him in on a deal that lands us a legitimate #1 RHD.

Let's also assume Lillegren (sp?) takes a similar career path as Dermott and he's ready in the next 2-3 seasons.
We also have Hainsey for one more year, so we may as well use him.
Zaitsev hasn't impressed in his NHL sophomore season, but he could bounce back. He got injured in December and it probably scared him and changed the way he plays. Hopefully he can shake it off.
Our defense would be:

2018-2019:

Rielly / Zaitsev (or #1RHD)
Hainsey / Zaitsev (or #2RHD)
Dermott / Rental

You also have Borgman who could step up and we can keep Hainsey on the right side if Zaitsev doesn't improve:

2018-2019 (with Borgman):
Rielly / Hainsey(or #1RHD)
Dermott/ Hainsey(or #2RHD)
Borgman/ Zaitsev

2019-2020:

Rielly / Zaitsev(or #1RHD)
Dermott / Zaitsev(or #2RHD)
Borgman (or Rental) / Lillegren

So, if we swap out Gardiner for a serviceable #2 RHD or package him up to get a #1RHD, that defense looks pretty alright.
If Andrew Nielson can make the jump from the Marlies that gives us some depth on the left hand side, but it'd be nice to get some #5-6 RHD in the free agent market to shore up our depth on defense.
Maybe pick up Chris Wideman this off season for depth? There's lots of possibilities.

Nothing wrong what planet are you living on he's been charged by dozens of women with abuse!
His own first wife charged him with rape. He was served a deposition but it was later withdrawn.
One of the pornstars he was shagging with while with his 3rd wide was paid off and then threatened by one of his minions.

Literally none of them have ever been proven and there was legitimate proof that those women were paid off by CNN prior to "coming out" just before they said it. Sorry man, don't drink the liberal koolaid.

But Voynov does have talent he would completely solve our top 4 RHD problem yet no one is willing to give him a chance when as you say no one should care in sports as long as they have talent.

So why's everyone drawing the line with Voynov?

I’m not willing to give him a chance article I read said he was found guilty of kicking his wife multiple times while she was on the ground, why would we want a coward playing for the leafs? A guy kicking a guy while he is on the ground is cowardly but your wife that is some piece shit.

I’m sorry if you look like a :eek::eek::eek:
Sound like a :eek::eek::eek::eek:

think that's out there for him? Was thinking 2x$4M would be the market

Vancouver media have been speculating the Nucks may try to ink him on a medium term deal.

Could make sense if they want to be more competitive. I can see them giving him a 3x4 type deal - maybe a year or two longer term given scarcity of centres

Makes sense for Vancouver I guess, I wouldn't want us to give him that kind of term though. Something like a Thornton might be interesting, a guy who thrives at making space in high traffic areas would probably fare better against teams like Boston

If the Leafs don’t go for JT, I’d like him to get Thornton - they can give him Bozaks usage (ie sheltered) and I think he’d thrive. Nice thing too is he’d likely take a one year deal

agree, Thornton on a big money 1-2 year deal would be a nice fit. Give him one speed demon winger and both with good shots and I think they produce like crazy. A Johnsson/Leivo-Thornton-Kapanen line in sheltered usage could be dangerous, just need wingers who don't need to have the puck on their stick all the time and can release it quickly when he feeds them, just let Jumbo do his thing in the offensive zone and get open

I think a disappointing playoffs will hurt our ability to sign star players.

Our team might not be any better next year.

I'll disagree - we've been in this series by all metrics but the scoreboard, and the whole league knows that Boston is not only good, but good in the playoffs. Can't imagine anyone looking at our core and thinking that they've peaked

And especially with a star UFA, they'll project their own impact as being a big positive for the team

Big LW options:
Neal
Kane
JVR
Nash
Maroon

we need more size on the wing adding one of these guys would be ideal.

C
Tavares
Thornton
Stastny

TBH i would rather put Nylander at C then sign stastny. I would be game for a Thornton one year and obviously Tavares is the absolute dream.

If we could land Tavares at something like 5 years 9 mil i would be happy. This means serious cap issues and a very mediocre defense long term but im okay with this for Matthews Tavares Kadri up the middle with Nylander Marner on the wings. Ive done the math and its possible to keep our big 3, goaltender, rielly, kadri, gardiner, zaitsev with Tavares...But we wont have much else except for cheap soldiers and elcs unless the cap goes up further.

There isnt really any great D options this year...Im not a fan of signing Carlson long term dont think he solves any of our issues on the backend. If anything we swap Gardiner for Dougthy in 2019.

Ideal offseason:
Sign Tavares 5 years 8.5 mil per
Sign Nash 1 year 5 mil per
Sign Schaller 2 years 2 mil per

Kapanen-Matthews-Nylander
Marleau-Kadri-Marner
Nash-Tavares-Hyman
Grundstrom-Schaller-Brown

Gardiner-Rielly
Dermott-Zaitsev
Hainsey-Holl
Lilj as callup

Thats a winning lineup

Counterpoint to self: At Nylanders current age Kadri had 20 points in 51 NHL games, and anyone predicting him to be a matchup C @ the NHL level would have been laughed out of the room. Forget giving up on him, it's way too early to type cast him into an NHL role/style

Unpopular Opinion- if the decision is made (imo prematurely) that he's not a long term fit, I think the trade that is best for the team looks nothing like the splashy deals for a stud #1, and is the kind of deal a lot of people will hate. Something like 1st+Braun+Tierney that stabilizes the D in a big way short term, brings in a gritty, high motor 40 point C with strong defence and room to grow to become a long term fan favourite, and another high pick to inject talent down the road.

I think you only consider Nylander as a framework for an ROR type, or obviously, a young D with stability that can grow into a top-pairing role....ROR being someone with elite 2-way, neutral zone play, and whom is as competitive as anyone when on his game. A guy like Braun, McNabb, McQuaid (not suggesting they all have the same value) is a need for our blue-line but not at the expense of Nylander.

Once you start considering selling Nylander for lesser, high motor players, you walk a fine-line where your beginning to neuter your team of creativity, high-end skill/talent.....and that is ultimately what you need to win in this league. Not only that, but the product becomes terrible to watch. With Nylander, you have to appreciate what he currently provides and the upside for a lot more. He's still a work in progress. My hope is it's not going to be like Hall, where he needs to leave to become empowered and take the next step. Though I think it's purely wishful optimism to think the two are similar caliber of players (Hall is certainly on another level right now).
