On the team’s end, the comparisons aren’t great. Players making exactly $1M are mostly washed-up veterans looking to prove they have something left (Michael Cammalleri, Scott Hartnell, Dominic Moore, Ales Hemsky) or young-ish players who haven’t done much (Nick Cousins, Tyler Pitlick). The team is basically saying show us one more year that you can stay at the NHL level, and then we’ll talk. Kind of like what the team did with Mike Hoffman.

For Dzingel’s ask, he comes in around players like Zack Kassian, Vladislav Namestnikov, and Joonas Donskoi. Last season, Dzingel scored 32 points in 81 games, while those other three scored 24 in 79, 28 in 74, and and 17 in 61 respectively. Dzingel and Donskoi are a month apart in age. Based on production and age, I’d say Dzingel’s ask looks a little more reasonable.

Donskoi's numbers

2015-16 San Jose Sharks NHL 76 11 25 36
2016-17 San Jose Sharks NHL 61 6 11 17

2 years @1.9AAV

Dzingel

2015-16 Ottawa Senators NHL 30 3 6 9
2016-17 Ottawa Senators NHL 81 14 18 32

For some reason I think Dzingel is going to have a very good year. I think they'd be wise to offer him a 2 or 3 year deal. He may want to gamble on himself like Hoffman did though.

Dzingel is very good at getting to the net, it's his finishing that is the problem. I do think he can improve that.

We don't have too many guys who get into open space and beat the D the way he does.

It's a fine deal. I'm hoping for a 35-40pt year. His shooting percentages and number of high quality chances could make that very possible.

He's getting traded. Ottawa doesn't like to lose arbitration deals.

Col: Dzingel, Logan Brown, Hamburglur, Gabriel Gagne, Shane Bowers
Ott: Matt Duchesne

Ottawa didn't lose an arbitration deal, they settled prior to a ruling.

Also that deal is some next level ******* for Colorado.

Forwards seem pretty locked in. Not going to be too many position battles for the main roster unless they plan to send White down and keep another guy up which may result in Paul battling with some others.

Ugh. Not a fan. Means next contract number starts over 2M.

I'd rather have taken him to arb, don't think he had a case for his ask

A bit more than I expected, but I don't really have a problem with it. If he could just improve his finishing ability he could definitely be a top six forward. We'll see how that goes.

He'll be a UFA at the end of the deal btw.

He'll be an UFA, won't he? I assume we just let him walk unless he turns into a star (unlikely).

I thought he had another year. On my phone so didn't check.

I stand corrected. He's a UFA so structure doesn't matter.
Number is still high imo though.

Agree with consensus. A little high but done now so lets see what washes out. I can see him included in a package as well, as others have stated.

Wideman + Dzingel, is the starting point for me. The add depends on the return.
