IMO, Mac and Trinity making the jump from small school to CanadaWest, dilutes the conference.
Many gimme games for the top dogs.
On the other hand, Mount Royal has been a pleasant surprise and may challenge Alberta and U of S for National berths.

In a day where I had to fit in a pile of international rugby, football, snow clearing, and AEW Wrestling, about all I could do with this game is catch the last two periods in the background. It was similar to Friday's game. The lineup changes were Hughes for Link in goal, Keane (making his first start of the season) and Doerksen in, Basarab and Behun out. That adds up to 11 forwards and 7 defencemen. The last goal was an empty-netter, so this is quite a stretch of de facto one-goal losses.

Quick Summary:
Man: B. Davis (01:33 3rd)
Reg: T. Nagel (16:02 1st) , B. Platt (18:04 2nd) , T. Ripplinger (18:21 3rd)
Goalies-Manitoba, Hughes (32 shots-30 saves). Regina, Holtby (30 shots-29 saves).

What has happened to Manitoba? They’ve gone from a University Cup team in 2010 and regular season champion in 2011/2012…to a solid 3rd-5th place team that was in that tier just below Alberta/Saskatchewan….to now being a fringe playoff team at best.

Are they not getting the same quality of recruits as before…is it the coaching…or has the league just improved in general and they haven’t kept pace?

They have good recruits. Almost the whole starting line-up is WHL grads. The losses have been close games. Other than Sask, they could win a playoff series against their other opponents (Calgary, UBC, Regina).

Scores:
at Calgary: 5-2 loss, 4-1 win
v UBC: 4-3 loss, 4-3 OTL
v Sask: 4-3 loss, 4-0 loss
at Regina: 3-2 loss, 3-1 loss (ENG)

In the abbreviated schedule, they only have remaining series against:
Upper level teams: MRU, Alberta, Sask
Lower level teams: MacEwan, Trinity, Regina

This was a weekend where CW teams were worse than usual in offering preview stories. After two losses in Regina, the Bisons need to make their mark against the upper echelon teams. They are due for some breaks!

The injury bug has devastated the Bisons. Three top forwards (Davis, Skoleski, and McCorrister) were absent. They accounted for 8 of the 18 Bison goals headed into this game. The difference was on the powerplay. MRU went 3-for-7 and the Bisons were 0-for-4. Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
30 Hughes (31 Link)

Defence
16 Hartje - 3 Harsch
5 Schioler - 6 Dyck
4 Anderson - 27 Doerksen

Forwards
21 Basarab - 12 Jameson - 22 Ostir
14 Keane - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 15 Dalke - 19 Halvorsen
24 Pierce - 28 Behun - 11 Carlson

Scratches
2 Stewart - 25 Sambrook
10 Skoleski - 23 Davis - 26 McCorrister - 29 King
35 Murphy

MOUNT ROYAL
Goal
33 Morris (35 Sims)

Defence
2 Walker - 6 Balfaro - 12 Kleiboer
3 Helgesen - 24 Jensen - 25 Schmiemann
16 Blake

Forwards
13 Sawchuk - 23 Yaremko - 18 Kennedy
20 Tarzwell - 8 Moe - 9 Regnier
10 Holmes - 21 Richards - Lindgren

Scratches
11 Fyten - 22 Arnold
27 Shamray - 31 Wray

Quick Summary
MRU: R. Sawchuk (05:54 1st) , N. Yaremko (12:31 2nd) , B. Kennedy (19:23 2nd) , N. Yaremko (12:55 3rd)
Man: D. Thiessen (08:41 3rd)
Goalies-Mount Royal, Morris (22 shots-21 saves). Manitoba, Hughes (35 shots-31 saves).

The Bluegars have a real reliance on their top line. It seemed they played every 2nd shift. Through 9 games, Yaremko is 11-7-18, Sawchuk is 7-10-17, and Kennedy is 3-5-8. They add Lindgren (1-9-10) on the powerplay and Yaremko and Sawchuk also killed some penalties. On defence, it seemed that Walker or Jensen were always out there, with one of the other defencemen on their “line”. Two players have left their program, forwards Ty Kolle and Keegan Iverson, leaving them with just 24 players.

I saw this one after the Bison game was over. I had a choice between two games in the MST time zone, both of which went to double-overtime. In the 3rd period and overtime at least, the T-irds seldom touched the puck. The Evil Monkeys seem to be on the verge of a breakout. Note that former H0rny One, Taz Berman, got the win over Rylan Toth.

Quick summary:

IMO, Alberta, Saskatchewan will most likely net the top two playoff spots. There seems to be parity between UBC, Mount Royal and Calgary, who are all capable of knocking off the top dogs, on any given night.

➤ Game reports: LeagueStat : CW
➤ UofM: Davis scores in OT, finishing comeback win for Bisons men over MRU (with boxscore and video)
➤ MRU: Team Website

The Bisons welcomed back to their line-up forwards Brett Davis and Devon Skoleski and defenceman Sam Stewart on Saturday afternoon, and it make a big difference to the game. That a new set of jerseys. They were light beige with a Ranger-style "BISONS" printed diagonally across the front. I'd prefer the bison head logo, but I like the unique colour. To make room, Apetagon, Basarab, and Pierce were scratched, resulting in 11 forwards and 7 d-men in the line-up. For the Bluegars Arnold (a forward) was in for Kleiboer (a defenceman) to return a 12/6 roster split.

MRU has the most top-heavy roster in the CW. They have the top two scorers, and four of the top six. Only one goal (their 4th on Staurday) was scored by somebody off their top line. In 10 games, these are their numbers:
Yaremko 13-7-20
Sawchuk 7-12-19
Kennedy 4-6-10
Lindgren 1-9-10

Quick Summary
MRU: N. Yaremko (06:02 1st) , B. Kennedy (09:23 1st) , N. Yaremko (00:16 2nd) , R. Holmes (04:31 3rd)
Man: D. Skoleski (16:10 1st) , R. Carlson (01:13 2nd) , B. Davis (05:22 3rd) , K. Jameson (08:44 3rd) , B. Davis (00:35 1st OT)
Goalies-Mount Royal, Morris 4-1-1-0 (30 shots-25 saves). Manitoba, Hughes 2-3-0-0 (31 shots-27 saves).

With some returning players, the Bisons did blend their lines, pairing Veloso with Jameson and Davis with Skoleski. I admit I wasn't able to watch this game as intently as Friday's game. I had multiple games going on multiple screens all day. Things started at 7:00 a.m. with a rugby quadruple-header and the last game (France v All-Blacks) overlapped with this game and the Hardy Cup footall final (Bisons lost).

The Bluegars held leads of 2-0, 3-1, and 4-2. While the game was generally even, the Bisons did control most of the late stages. Davis scored at even strength in the 3rd period to cut MRU's lead to 4-3. In mid-period, Veloso picked up a turnover while shorthanded and scurried up ice on a breakaway. Morris made the save, but Jameson picked it up behind the net and scored on a wrap-around. Near the end of the game, with referee's whistles firmly in pockets, MRU took a too many men on the ice penalty (each side had one of these earlier). The powerplay continued into overtime where Brett Davis scored his second of the night and sixth of the season.

The Bisons are now 2-7-1 and MRU is 6-3-1. Next weekend, the Bisons travel to Alberta to wrap the 1st semester. MRU has a bye week. This marks the half-way point of the Bison schedule. In the new year, just four series will remain: Hosting Mac, visiting Trinity, hosting Regina, and visiting Sask. It gets late early.

I saw a good chunk of this game in conjunction with HNIC and CFL football. The Mutts took 5-minute majos in the 2nd and 3rd periods so Bedrock U might be missing injured players next weekend. On the night, the Dinos were 0-for-8 on the PP, including those two 5-minute jobs. Sask was 0-for-5 themselves. The Dinos are now 6-3-1 and this was Sask's first loss, now 7-1-0.

With the out-of-town games staggered nicely, I caught this one in progress after the game from Bedrock was over. The T-irds had an early 2-0 lead. The Evil Monkeys really did take control of the game and built a 4-2 lead. Two first year Monkeys had two goals each (Daneel Lategan, 6-0-6, and Gary Haden, 4-4-8). The Monkeys still don't seem themselves but are still 6-2-0. The T-irds are 6-1-1. Things will be telling for them once they play MRU, Calgary, and Saskatchewan.

This game rounded off my viewing pleasure on a busy Saturday. Regina won easily, having a 5-1 3rd period lead before Holy Trinity mounted a mini-rally. I believe that Trinity's 35 shots were a season high. TWU falls to 0-8-0 and Regina is 5-5-0.

It looks like both UBC vs Alberta (in Edmonton) games were very close, including a double overtime game on Friday night.
It seems that the T-Birds have gained confidence, since knocking off Alberta in the 2020 CanadaWest playoffs.
Alberta has certainly been beatable at times this season, including exhibition.
It's been a long time, since Stauffer has chimed in on the Bears......

The Bisons have struggled early, and a trip to Edmontown to face the Evil Monkeys is not a cure for a slump. But with some injured players having returned last Saturday, the squad is getting better. There was no preview story from either side.

The Herd needed to get at least a split to finish the 1st semester, and now they have that and will push for a sweep on Saturday night. First, here's how the teams lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
30 Hughes (35 Murphy)

Defence
5 Schioler - 6 Dyck
16 Hartje - 3 Harsch
4 Anderson - 27 Doerksen - 2 Stewart

Forwards
14 Keane - 12 Jameson - 17 Veloso
10 Skoleski - 23 Davis - 22 Ostir
26 McCorrister - 9 Thiessen - 19 Halvorsen
11 Carlson - 15 Dalke

Scratches
20 Apetagon - 21 Basarab - 24 Pierce
25 Sambrook - 28 Behun - 29 King
31 Link

ALBERTA

Goal
1 Burman - 31 Schneider

Defence
4 Kirichenko - 6 Freadrich
7 Plouffe - 3 Lakusta
8 McLeod - 22 Sakowich

Forwards
15 Lategan - 16 Pawlenchuk - 17 Fonteyne
14 Florchuk - 18 Hughes - 23 Haden
20 Volcan - 29 Paterson - 24 Savenkov (D)
10 Prokop - 11 Preziuso - 25 Smith

Scratches
5 Davidson - 26 Wolski - 27 Miske
30 Bennett - 35 Berlin - 37 Trolley

This was as wild and crazy as one would expect a 7-6 game to be. The Bisons lead four times, only to see the Evil Monkeys tie it up each time. The Apes led just once, 1-0 after two minutes.

Bison scorers were defencemen Harsch and Stewart (with their firsts of the season), Skoleski with his 3rd and 4th, and Davis with his 7th, 8th, and 9th, including the overtime winner. Haden's two goals led the Monkeys. That's overtime winners in two straight games for Davis.

There were some dubious calls and non-calls. Liam Hughes knocked over at least six times in the Bison goal. I feared he was re-injured on one occasion. The Apes had five PPs to one for the Bisons, although each side had one goal on the PP.

Alberta falls to 6-2-1 and Manitoba improves to 3-7-1.

Quick summary:
Man: R. Harsch (02:53 1st) , S. Stewart (03:46 1st) , B. Davis (04:26 2nd) , B. Davis (07:14 2nd) , D. Skoleski (15:59 2nd) , D. Skoleski (01:30 3rd) , B. Davis (00:25 1st OT)
Alta: G. Haden (02:42 1st) , G. Pawlenchuk (11:58 1st) , R. Hughes (06:04 2nd) , G. Haden (08:43 2nd) , E. Florchuk (11:06 3rd) , J. Paterson (16:36 3rd)
Goalies-Manitoba, Hughes 3-3-0-0 (40 shots-34 saves). Alberta, Burman 3-1-0-0 (15 shots-9 saves); Schneider 3-0-1-0 (4 shots-3 saves).

Of note, Alberta laws restrict the Clare Drake Arena to 1,000 spectators. And that's what they had.

I caught the end of the 2nd period, and all of the 3rd. When I started watching it was already 4-1 so all I saw was two teams sleep-walking through an uneventful ending. There was some chippiness, though. UBC went 0-for-8 on the PP. UBC is now 7-1-1 and Sask is 7-2-0.

Could the Heard pull off a sweep?
It seems the Bears have yet to find a replacement for Sawchenko.
Former Pronghorn, Taz Burman on the hook for this one.
Alberta has used three goaltenders regularly thus far and until Saturday Taz did the best. Alberta was soft in front of their net. If Alberta uploads a game story the highlights will show the Bison goals. I would guess Alberta will be better Saturday. I believe both sides still have injuries.

There were very few changes from Friday night for the Evil Monkeys, none for the Bisons. In goal, they started Schneider with Berlin at backup, and traded Wolski for Smith on their 4th line.

The score is not reflective of the game. It was a 3-2 game 12 minutes into the 3rd when they called a silly interference penalty on Brett Davis (he was standing still and hit a Monkey crossing the blueline). The Monkeys scored on the ensuing PP, and later added two empty-netters.

Alberta is now 7-2-1 and Manitoba falls to 3-8-1. In a shortened 20-game season, the Bisons' remaining games are:
Jan 14-15 host MacEwan
Jan 21-22 at Trinity Western
Feb 4-5 host Regina
Feb 11-12 at Saskatchewan

This is a big win for the Banjo-Cats, lifting them to a 6-5-1 record. This after starting the season 0-2-0 against MacEwan. Calgary is 7-4-1, and could be a contender or even out of the playoffs. It is so hard to tell with them.

This was a shocker. In the back of my mind, I thought there was a strong chance that Holy Trinity would go 0-20-0 this year. Who would believe they could score six goals one night, after just nine all season. This was a good comeback. After the 1st, Mac lead 3-1 and outshot them 18-4. UBC, with a home sweep of Saskatchewan, has set themselves up for one of two playoff bye's.
10/20 games played and 4/10 games remaining with Trinity.
If so, they would not only get a bye, but home ice, possibly for the balance of the playoffs, which usually goes through Claire Drake Arena.
They not only knocked of Alberta in 2020, but did it in Edmonton.
Alberta with the easiest schedule, 6/10 games left with lowly MacEwan and Trinity.
IMO, these two teams are frontrunners for the 2 bye's.
Saskatchewan, has a tough schedule, with no gimme games.

This is a bye week for the Bisons, Calgary and Regina. The other six teams all had a bye week already, in addition to the conference-wide bye week into which Covid postponements were rescheduled. Brett Davis was awarded the CW’s Player of the Week honours. The schedule resumes on January 14th. There was supposed to be a Universiade starting next week, but that fell victim to Covid.

This is the home-and-home Battle of Edmontown. Evil Monkeys vs. Mythical Mutants. The Apes need a four-point weekend to stay in the top two and be in a position for a first round bye. Although most USports fans would like to see them earn a berth at the nationals on the road for a change. Mac suffered an embarrassing loss to Holy Trinity and their reaction should say something.

On paper, this is the best match-up. Let’s see what happens on the ice. The Bluegars have been showing occasional flashes of an ability to become a solid upper echelon team. The Banjo-Mutts were at one time looking like the best team in the league, then folded against UBC. Both sides have a lot to prove. The local paper in Saskatown posted a story about the FISU announcement.

So, will the Holy Trinity have a hard time finding motivation after achieving a victory last weekend? Is there mission now complete? In any event, the T-irds are on a roll and know darn well they need all six wins for offer in the Battle of British California.

The score is deceptive here. It was just 2-0 when the Evil Monkeys scored an empty-netter in the last two minutes. Two more late goals produced a flattering scoreline. However, it must be added that the Mutants had but three shots in a third period where they trailed. Alberta is now 8-2-1 and Mac is 3-8-0.
