The Monkeys already had first place guaranteed before the game, and the Mutant Monsters were assured of 8th, and their season is now over.

This was the 6th meeting of the season for the rivals from British California, and it was Holy Trinity’s first point. Of note, TWU had just three goals in their first five games against the T-irds. The win (in fact, one point) assured UBC of second place and a first round bye. TWU was 9th before the game and could not elevate.


NEWS AND NOTES

The Bison season ended a week ago, but some stories trickled in. There was a game story featuring Brett Murphy, a story on Linden McCorrister getting AoW honours, and stories on graduates Keaton Jameson and Ryan Carlson turning pro in the ECHL. Jameson is off to the Fort Wayne Komets and Carlson is headed to the Norfolk Admirals.

As the overtime would suggest, this was a tight game throughout. The Banjo-Cats held a 2-1 lead after the frist and tried to hang on. However, the Bluegars scored with a minute-and-a-half to go to force overtime. Nolan Yaremko got his 2nd goal of the series (after 19 in 20 regular season games) to win it. The Bluegars will face UBC next weekend in a rematch of the 2020 quarter-final won on the road by UBC.

This was a terrific playoff game. The three games in three nights had the players running on near-empty but still playing with sheer determination. Bedrock U built a 2-0 lead, the Mutts rebounded to take a 3-2 lead, then the Dinos wrapped it with two late goals. The game-tieing goal by Tim Vanstone was a fabulous breakaway where he somehow summoned some extra energy.

So next weekend, the Dinos are off to face the Monkeys in Edmontown, the destination where countless seasons have ended for them.

The Dinos had a lot of jump early, and took a 1-0 lead on an early PP. However, with the score tied 1-1 and five minutes left in the opening period, the Evil Monkeys scored two PP goals 40 seconds apart. After that it seemed like a foregone conclusion.

The Bluegars were completely out of synch in this one. The T-irds didn’t do much in the 1st (just 5 shots) but once they kicked into gear in the 2nd and 3rd periods it was all one-way action.

Game two goes Saturday at 7:30 PST, 9:30 CST, which ives nice spacing with the other series.

The Evil Monkeys seem to be gaining steam. They may be strong favourites to take the CW in two weeks (there is a bye week next week to compensate for the delays out east), and perhaps in the U-Cup as well.

Once again, this was anybody's game. There was just one goal per period. A best-of-three periods, if you will. The winning goal came as the stream was buffering for me. The Bluegars dominated the 1st period but after that had only sporadic stretches of pressure.

In two weeks time, the T-irds will visit the Evil Monkeys in the CW final. The delay was occasioned by the postponement of the U-Cup created by the eastern lockdowns.

This was the winner-take-all final of the BCIHL's championship tournament. They just played a 12 game schedule around lockdowns, followed by this tournament. They have also announced one new team for next year - the Logan Lake Miners, who will have players from Thompson Rivers University and Nicola Valley Institute of Technology. I guess they replace the Thompson Okanagan Pioneers team which was planned.

Yeah, this is a weird and interesting flex from the BCIHL, having Logan Lake (of all places) be the home this new club. Logan Lake has not a lot else going on in the winter (or most times, really), so there is a good likelihood the community could embrace this team as its own hometown team. While it's a trek for the players - an hour drive from Kamloops and about 45 minutes from Merritt - it allows the team to own the market. They would have been lost in Kamloops, which already has the Blazers and a Junior B team (plus a whack of minor hockey) nibbling away at the hockey interest. TRU, of course, had its BCIHL team die from lack of funding a few years back, and back when it was still Cariboo College, it was the last of the BC representatives to go to CCAA championships.

But again, it annoys me that college sports continues to be a half-baked cake. Either you fund college sports or you don't. SFU, UVic and VIU, especially, but TRU and Okanagan University should either get in or get out.

After a week off to allow for some catch-up out east, the CW returned to action Friday night. The Evil Monkeys required an empty-netter to put this away. However, they really dominated the T-irds. Shots were 31-14, and 13-1 in the 3rd period where the Monkeys held a 3-2 lead. That sort of D is a good sign for the Primates.

Game two goes Saturday at 7:00 MST, 8:00 CST, as would game three on Sunday, if required. Both sides are assured of berths in the U-Cup.

In the battle of Rs, Ryerson won! Every U-Cup needs an upset and here it was. Ryerson scored early in the 2nd period to take a 2-0 lead and from that point onwards were basically hanging on for dear life. This result threw the bottom half of the draw wide open.

For the Jeremies, the good news was that they scored first. They also outshot the Evil Monkeys 35-28, the difference coming in the 2nd period where the shots were 13-6 for St. FX, but the goals were 3-0 for the Evil Monkeys. It's nice to see that Taz Burman is the #1 Ape Goaltender, having come over from Lethbridge. The Evil Monkeys are usually playing composed and with the lead. They've dusted off the AUS, and the OUA is pending.

UQTR was rebounding from at OT win on Friday, and a bus problem on the way to the rink on Saturday. Those things were no impediment to their destruction of the Rams on Saturday evening. This was kind of free-wheeling, with shots ending up 43-31 in favour of UQTR. It seemed that Ryerson was the tired team in the 3rd period, where they were outscored 3-0.

As a result, on Sunday the green teams go for gold and the blue teams go for bronze.
